How Midge Purce, the Soccer Star, Spends Her Day Training
Her commutes are filled with phone calls (she talks to her father at least four times a day), waiting around for practice drives her nuts and she trains early in the morning during the off-season, considering her day 'done' before 11 a.m.
But Ms. Purce, 29, is learning to make peace with patience. After having to miss out on nearly all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, she is familiar with the monotony of incremental improvement.
She was a founding board member of the Black Women's Player Collective, which promotes opportunities for Black women and girls in soccer and beyond. 'B.W.P.C. is one of the things I'm probably most proud of, because it's a really tangible direct line to impacting young women's lives,' she said.
She lives in an apartment in Harrison, N.J., near the Gotham F.C. training facility, and thanks to side projects like a recent cameo in the Broadway musical 'Chicago,' finds herself frequently going into Manhattan.
Ms. Purce recently spent a Tuesday sharing a typical training day with a twist: a fitting for an appearance on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers.'

WWE SummerSlam 2025 Confirmed Matches And Expected Main Events
Roman Reigns is returning to the ring at SummerSlam. (Credit: Bradlee Rutledge/ WWE via Getty ... More Images) WWE SummerSlam 2025 will take place across two nights for the first time ever this year, and the two-night extravaganza is shaping up to be a show for the ages. Among the key attractions inside MetLife Stadium are a WrestleMania 41 rematch pitting Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship as well as the first televised bout between CM Punk and Gunther. SummerSlam 2025 set a SummerSlam record with nearly 58,000 fans in attendance, and this year, more than 40,000 tickets have been sold for each night. The 2025 edition of WWE SummerSlam will mark Cena's final SummerSlam appearance as part of his official retirement tour. WWE SummerSlam 2025 Match Card for Saturday Last Friday, WWE revealed the match card for each night of SummerSlam 2025. There are currently six matches scheduled for Night One on Saturday, Aug. 2: Country singer Jelly Roll is stepping in as a celebrity replacement for rapper Travis Scott after the latter reportedly had a "falling out" with WWE. The WWE Women's Tag Team Championship is also a surprise addition to WWE SummerSlam as Bliss and Flair were originally set to face each other in singles action before Flair requested that the parternship continue due to the mismatched duo's surprising early success. WWE SummerSlam 2025 Match Card for Sunday WWE's second night of SummerSlam will take place on Sunday, Aug. 3, and there are just five announced matches thus far: Styles vs. Mysterio was originally scheduled for June's Night of Champions but was postponed due to an injury to 'Dirty Dom.' Also noteworthy, if Valkyria fails to beat Lynch in their 'Last Chance' match, she will not be allowed to challenge for the IC title again as Long as 'The Man' is champion. WWE SummerSlam 2025 Main Event Matches According to a report from the Wrestling Observer (h/t Sports Illustrated), 'The WrestleMania 41 rematch between John Cena and Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship is the expected close the show on Sunday. As for Saturday night, the World Heavyweight Championship bout appears to be the front runner for the main spot.' The site adds, 'Gunther vs. CM Punk is the favorite to cap off night one of SummerSlam over either of the two Women's World Title matches or any other marquee contest on the card.' In March, Punk faced Gunther at a non-televised live event in Belfast, but the two stars have never faced each other at a WWE PLE. In addition, Seth Rollins was at one expected to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase in or after that main event match, though it's unclear if Rollins' knee injury has altered those plans. If Rollins does cash in, it could mark the second consecutive WWE pay-per-view that ends with a MITB cash-in after Naomi's epic title win at Evolution. WWE SummerSlam 2025 Additional Matches The lone confirmed match that has not been officially set for either Saturday or Sunday was announced in a red hot show-closing segment on the latest SmackDown: A 6-way TLC match for the WWE Tag Team Championship. The SmackDown tag team division has been one of the brand's overlooked bright spots in 2025, and it certainly has more than enough teams to make some more magic. After previously being left off several major pay-per-views, the WWE tag team titles will finally be on the line at a marquee show. The Wyatt Sicks will defend their gold against the following teams: Andrade and Rey Fenix, The Street Profits, DIY, The Motor City Machine Guns and Fraxiom. Suffice it to say, this division has been left off too many marquee shows thus far, but it won't happen again at SummerSlam. Given that only five matches have been announced for Sunday in comparison to six on Saturday, the TLC match is likely to be added to Sunday's portion of WWE SummerSlam 2025.

Javier Mascherano Takes Aim At MLS Following Lionel Messi Suspension
HARRISON, NJ - JULY 19: Javier Mascherano head coach of Inter Miami talks with Lionel Messi #10 of ... More Inter Miami during a hydration break during the first half of the game against the New York Red Bulls on July 19, 2025 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Javier Mascherano criticised Major League Soccer's decision to suspend Lionel Messi after Inter Miami drew 0-0 with Supporters' Shield challengers FC Cincinnati in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday night. Inter Miami were without Messi for this key matchup after the league suspended its reigning MVP for failing to show up for the MLS All-Star game last week. Inter Miami decided that its two players called up for the game, Messi and Jordi Alba, needed a rest due to a tough competitive schedule that included games in the Club World Cup, MLS, and upcoming Leagues Cup games. League rules state that any player missing the All-Star game without a good reason and not informing the league in advance will be suspended for the following game. Mascherano suggested that Messi might not have been suspended were the next game an away from home, because MLS teams across the league have used Messi's presence to sell additional tickets (at higher prices) and to create a buzz around these games featuring the Argentine star. 'What would've happened if this game had been played away?' Mascherano asked after the game. 'Would there still have been calls for Messi to be suspended? Because no one complains when it is time to fill stadiums and sell tickets.' The MLS schedule has thrown up two meetings in quick succession between these sides. The first, on July 16, was won 3-0 by FC Cincinnati as Messi was eclipsed by a challenger to his MVP crown in 2025, Evander, who scored two second-half goals. This second meeting ended in a 0-0 draw on Saturday night. Though it was an improvement on a 3-0 defeat for Miami in Ohio, they might think that back at home with Messi involved, they would have managed a win. Inter Miami now sits eight points off the top of the overall standings, a position currently occupied by Philadelphia Union. Miami also has three games in hand on the back of missing MLS play for the Club World Cup, so remains in a position to overtake the leader. Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas spoke of his disappointment at MLS's decision to suspend Messi immediately after it came on Friday night. He said it might affect the way players like Messi view the league if they are going to be suspended for an important league match on the back of missing an exhibition game. 'He's very upset, extremely upset today, as expected.' Jorge Mas said of Messi's reaction. 'I'm hopeful it doesn't have an impact long term. Will it have an impact, initially, on the players' perception of how the league rules work? Absolutely, no doubt.' FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA - NOVEMBER 10: Inter Miami CF owner Jorge Mas celebrates with Lionel Messi ... More #10 of Inter Miami CF as he holds his trophy during the Ballon d'Or trophy presentation at DRV PNK Stadium on November 10, 2023 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. (Photo by) Inter Miami now goes into a run of games in the Leagues Cup—a relatively new competition involving MLS teams and teams from Mexico's Liga MX, which was expanded in recent years. This expansion added even more fixtures to the calendar and affected MLS participation in the United States' domestic cup, the US Open Cup, from which some teams continue to withdraw at the behest of the league. It is for this reason that Jorge Mas and Inter Miami believe their decision not to send Messi and Alba to the All-Star match was justified. 'They were coming off a run of nine games in 35 days, hard games,' Jorge Mas said in his statement on Friday. 'The last two [MLS] games were games on the road at Cincinnati and New York. We're facing a game tomorrow, and we're facing a course of 10 games over the next 34 days. 'There is a rule in MLS, which, if they miss the All-Star game, they're suspended for one game. I believe it's a bad rule, but it's a rule nonetheless. It's a bad rule, because I think it puts the players in an untenable position to have to choose between participating in an All-Star festivity, which, at the end, is an exhibition match, or choosing a game, a regular-season game, that I think matters. 'I admire both Lionel and Jordi for always thinking of the club first. Lionel and Jordi would have been faced with either missing a game in New York, which was an amazing display of football skills by our team, and by Lionel Messi, which rounds have made around the world, then participating in the All-Star game in order to be able to play against Cincinnati. 'Having to put a player in a position to have to choose—and again, the ones that get penalized are the club, the fans, sponsors, TV, Apple, etc… So I think that the punishment for the rule is, frankly, draconian.' NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - AUGUST 19: Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami hoist the trophy with his ... (Photo by) Inter Miami's Leagues Cup campaign begins against Liga MX side Atlas in the league phase on Wednesday, which will be followed by games against Necaxa on Saturday and Pumas UNAM a week on Wednesday. MLS regular season matches return on August 10 before the Leagues Cup knockout rounds begin later in the month.

Commanders to induct Santana Moss into their Ring of Fame
The Commanders will kick off the 2025 season by adding a player to the franchise's Ring of Fame. The team announced that they will be inducting wide receiver Santana Moss into the group during their Week 1 game against the Giants. Moss will be the 52nd person to join the club. Moss began his NFL career as a Jets first-round pick in 2001 and he moved on to Washington in a 2005 trade that sent wideout Laveranues Coles to New Jersey. Moss spent 10 seasons with the club and picked up 581 catches for 7,867 yards and 47 touchdowns. Moss ranks third in franchise history behind Art Monk and Charley Taylor in catches and fourth behind those two players and Gary Clark in receiving yards. He will join all three of those players as members of the team's Ring of Fame.
