How Midge Purce, the Soccer Star, Spends Her Day Training
Midge Purce, the star forward for Gotham F.C., is known for her quick, attacking style on the soccer field. Away from it, she's similarly on the move.
Her commutes are filled with phone calls (she talks to her father at least four times a day), waiting around for practice drives her nuts and she trains early in the morning during the off-season, considering her day 'done' before 11 a.m.
But Ms. Purce, 29, is learning to make peace with patience. After having to miss out on nearly all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, she is familiar with the monotony of incremental improvement.
She was a founding board member of the Black Women's Player Collective, which promotes opportunities for Black women and girls in soccer and beyond. 'B.W.P.C. is one of the things I'm probably most proud of, because it's a really tangible direct line to impacting young women's lives,' she said.
She lives in an apartment in Harrison, N.J., near the Gotham F.C. training facility, and thanks to side projects like a recent cameo in the Broadway musical 'Chicago,' finds herself frequently going into Manhattan.
Ms. Purce recently spent a Tuesday sharing a typical training day with a twist: a fitting for an appearance on 'Late Night with Seth Meyers.'
