Syria explosion: 7 killed 157 hurt at Idlib arms site; cause unknown
Syrian Civil Defense workers run at the explosion scene in Maarat Misrin village (AP photo) At least seven people were killed and more than 150 injured after a massive explosion at an ammunition depot in Syria's Idlib province on Thursday, according to rescue teams and war monitors. The blast hit the town of Maarat Misrin, where White Helmets volunteers were seen pulling bodies from debris and treating the injured. Fires broke out across the site, with teams still struggling due to fresh explosions in the area. No official cause has been confirmed, though state TV linked it to leftover weapons from Syria's long civil war. The Syrian civil defence said the blast took place inside a weapons storage site. Idlib was a key rebel stronghold during the 14-year war, which ended last year with the ouster of Bashar al-Assad. The province remains volatile under Syria's new interim leadership.

UK surgeon faces fraud and grievous bodily harm charges in Cornwall case
A 49-year-old vascular surgeon from the UK, who performed hundreds of amputations, has been charged with lying about how he lost his legs in order to claim nearly Rs 5.5 crore in insurance. He has also been accused of encouraging another person to remove body parts from others, The Guardian doctor, Neil Hopper, falsely claimed that he lost his legs to sepsis in the hope of getting GBP 235,622 (Rs 2.75 crore) from one insurer and GBP 231,031 (Rs 2.7 crore) from getting arrested for the first time in 2023, the doctor, who worked at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, faces serious legal charges following a two-and-a-half-year probe. The surgeon, who was suspended after his initial arrest, is accused of three offences, including fraud and encouraging grievous bodily harm. Besides fraud, Hopper allegedly encouraged Marius Gustavson to remove body parts of others after showing him limb removal videos from a website called The Eunuch Maker. During a Cornwall Magistrates Court hearing, Hopper appeared from custody but did not enter a plea. A bail application was submitted but Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, where Hopper was employed until his March 2023 suspension, cooperated with the investigation. "The charges do not relate to Mr Hopper's professional conduct and there has been no evidence to suggest any risk to patients," a spokesperson for the trust was quoted by The Guardian as a 2023 BBC interview, Hopper discussed his amputations, stating, "I do quite a lot of amputations and the one thing that kept going around in my mind was power tools. The thought of power tools being used on me was icky. It was really weird." He claimed rapid recovery, saying, "I did it in three hours," and noted, "I hate to say it but I'm more active since I lost my legs than I was before."- Ends

Syria arms depot blasts kill 12, wounds more than 100
DAMASCUS: A series of explosions killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 100 at a weapons depot in northwestern Syria on Thursday, a monitor said. "Multiple blasts at a weapons and ammunition warehouse belonging to the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 100 in Maaret Misrin, in northern Idlib province," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Those killed included a woman and a child, said the Britain-based monitor, which relies on a network of sources on the ground. The TIP is a jihadist group active in the Idlib region made up of Uighur fighters who joined the Syrian civil war to fight against former president Bashar al-Assad. Syria's health ministry had reported four deaths and 116 wounded in the blasts, in a preliminary toll published by the official news agency SANA. Authorities did not immediately say what may have caused the explosions. AFP images showed a huge plume of white smoke over the town, where several children were among the injured.
