Mary Fowler is cruelly trolled for supporting brain cancer charity - before they are firmly put back in their place
The Manchester City forward shared an image online supporting the Mark Hughes Foundation, wearing one of the charity's distinctive blue beanies and urging her followers to purchase one as well.
'Got myself a new cute beanie in preparation for the NRL Beanie for Brain Cancer Round coming up at the end of June,' she posted.
'The team at the Mark Hughes Foundation are doing incredibly impactful work to help those in need.
'If you'd like to show your support, you can purchase a beanie following the link in my BIO.'
Mark Hughes is a former NRL star who played 161 games for the Newcastle Knights, scoring 66 tries, winning two premierships and representing New South Wales in State of Origin during his career.
In 2013, aged 36, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, a life-altering event that inspired him and his wife Kirralee to start the Mark Hughes Foundation in 2014.
The Mark Hughes Foundation focuses on raising funds for brain cancer research, supporting patient care, and increasing awareness of the disease.
One of its flagship events is the annual "Beanie for Brain Cancer" campaign, with over one million beanies sold and tens of millions of dollars donated to research and support programs.
Building on this, the NRL holds the Beanie for Brain Cancer Round in June, during which fans, players, and clubs wear beanies to raise funds - most recently generating $3.1million in 2024.
Fowler's efforts to promote the 2025 event was met with cynicism by one follower, though, who accused her of doing it for the money.
'How much are rugby league (Mark Hughes foundation) paying you?' they asked with a laughing emoji to mock the Matildas star further.
One of Fowler's more polite followers pointed out that she had a connection to the game through her partner, Panthers star Nathan Cleary.
'Her partner plays league you muppet,' they replied.
One troll tried to belittle her efforts, prompting the Mark Hughes Foundation to clarify that she was not being paid to endorse the charity
And the Mark Hughes Foundation itself also replied, clarifying that Fowler was not being paid to promote the good cause.
'To be really clear we offered to send Mary a Beanie in the aim of her posting and improving our sales,' the foundation's official Instagram account replied.
'Mary then graciously went online, brought 3 beanies and had them shipped to the UK.
'Posted, not only a story, which we get from most influencers but a post and even collaborated with us and added our link to her bio. Way above and beyond.
'Also we do not pay anyone to promote our beanies and the NRL support us by hosting the Beanie Round they do not, nor need to pay anyone to wear them.'
Beanies are available online through the Foundation's official website, where this year's options include the bold Violet Chunky Knit and the timeless Classic Grey, both priced at $29.
Fans attending Round 17 matches from June 26 to 29 can also buy beanies at the stadiums.
In addition, participating retailers such as Lowes, selected IGA supermarkets, and some Woolworths stores are stocking the beanies nationwide.
All proceeds go directly toward brain cancer research and patient support programs run by the Foundation.

Owen Farrell has been handed a shock call-up to the British and Irish Lions tour as an injury replacement for Elliot Daly. Daly suffered a forearm injury in the Lions' 52-12 win over the Queensland Reds, and X-rays have since confirmed a tour-ending injury for the versatile Englishman. His Saracens teammate Farrell has therefore been given an unlikely call to join up with the party in Australia in a sensational call by head coach Andy Farrell. The 33-year-old fly half has not featured in international rugby since the 2023 World Cup and endured a difficult time with Racing 92 last season before sealing a return to Saracens after just a single campaign in France. He has not played at all for nine weeks. He was close, however, to making the initial 38-man squad named by his father for the tour to Australia and has now earned a fourth Lions selection as an injury replacement. 'It is heartbreaking for the group that Elliot's Tour is over. He is a Lions legend who has added so much to the group on and off the field over the past few weeks and over the course of three Tours,' head coach Farrell said. While his vast experience – Farrell has featured in six Tests in Lions red to go along with 112 England caps – and competitive spirit will be useful additions, his call-up is intriguing in what it says about the options available to Andy Farrell. Daly's utility in covering 13, wing and full-back had made him an excellent squad-man, and he had impressed at 15 after featuring in all three games so far. The 32-year-old had not been picked for the Reds game only to be called in late after illness struck down Hugo Keenan. The Lions head coach expressed his confidence in his full-back options after the win in Brisbane despite both Keenan and Blair Kinghorn, a late arrival after helping Toulouse to the Top 14 title, being yet to feature. By calling up his son, Farrell is perhaps suggesting that he sees Marcus Smith as primarily a full-back with Finn Russell and Fin Smith the other fly half options on tour. It may be, too, that there is a slight worry over an issue for Russell, who had ice on his wrist after being replaced at Suncorp Stadium though is not thought to be a major injury concern. Farrell can, of course, also cover inside centre with just four specialist options named initially in the squad. Back row Ben Earl spent the final few minutes of the Reds game stationed at 12, as he has done several times for England over the last year. The Lions take on the Waratahs on Saturday in Sydney as the tour continues apace with just a fortnight now until the first Test against the Wallabies back in Brisbane. Keenan and Kinghorn both start with the Scotland back stationed on the wing and the Irishman, recovered from his illness, at full-back. Lock Tadhg Beirne captains the side with Henry Pollock deployed at blindside flanker in a mobile back row that also includes Earl and Josh van der Flier. Oasis' Bonehead on truth behind nickname after parents' utterly brutal decision
Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs is an Oasis legend but not everyone knows why he is known as Bonehead so here he explains all It is the great nickname in Oasis - but the reason why guitarist Paul Arthurs is called Bonehead goes back to his childhood. The 60-year-old owes his moniker to his parents and their hatred of long hair, before he was playing gigs with Noel and Liam Gallagher. Taking up the story in the Oasis book Supersonic, Paul said: 'I probably got the name Bonehead when I was eight. 'In 1973 most people in my primary school did have long hair, which was the style of the time, and I didn't. It was just straight down the barbers every Friday, you know, typical Irish Catholic parents, and they're having none of it, no long hair in our house. 'They gave me my 50 pence, and I had to go down. 'What is it? Usual your short back and sides?'. 'No long hair on our street. So that was my nickname from the age of eight. You know, some kid, 'Ah, look at the bonehead!'. And that was it. 'When I got to secondary school, even the teachers referred to me as Bonehead, even when they were angry, Bonehead, it wasn't 'Arthur's'. That's when you knew you were in trouble. When you got the surname, it was Bonehead, and has been ever since.' Despite the straight forward nature of the nickname Bonehead, the guitarist admitted he had played around with the name a little since he had been in Oasis and in the early days when they got big and were doing interviews. He explained: 'When we got really well known we used to do interviews in France, and they want to know why I was called Bonehead. I always used to tell them that I went right back in my family history. My real name is Bonaparte Headimas, and the Bonehead was for short. People fell for it.' Bonehead is a rare member of the Oasis inner circle who has stayed friends with Noel and Liam Gallagher through all their ups and downs. Despite the Gallaghers loving Manchester City, Bonehead is a red and even being a United fan has not led to any fallings out amongst them.
