Shivraj Singh Chouhan chairs meeting aimed at boosting cotton productivity

India Gazette18 hours ago
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): A significant meeting aimed at boosting cotton productivity was convened on Friday at the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, under the leadership of Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
The meeting saw in-depth discussions on the history of cotton, the current scenario, challenges, and future strategies for increasing cotton productivity in India, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare said.
Also present on the occasion were Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, Haryana Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana, Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate, Vice Chancellors of agricultural universities from various states, ICAR Director General ML Jat, officials, stakeholders, scientists, and farmers.
Before the meeting, the Union Agriculture Minister visited cotton fields, interacted with farmers, and listened to their issues and concerns.
The formal meeting began with Shivraj Singh Chouhan's address, where he emphasised that the meet was being held on the sacred land of Tamil Nadu, one of India's most ancient states, with the Tamil language having a 5,000-year-old heritage.
He noted that a new cotton revolution is finding its roots and taking shape on the soil of Tamil Nadu, reiterating that the meeting today was much more than a mere formality.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan stressed that after food, clothing is the most essential need for a person. 'Just as one cannot live without food, it is equally impossible to live without clothing. Clothes come from cotton, and cotton is produced by our farmers. Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy, and farmers are its soul. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is fully committed to farmers' welfare,' he said.
However, the Minister acknowledged the challenges in cotton production in our country as India's productivity lags behind compared to other countries. The BT cotton variety, once developed to increase yields, is now facing a threat from diseases, resulting in declining productivity. He stressed that India must take every possible step -- just like other nations -- to improve cotton productivity using modern technologies and by developing virus-resistant, high-yielding seeds. He emphasized the importance of timely delivery of these improved seeds to farmers and urged scientists to work with full commitment to ensure this.
He further stated that the issues and demands raised by farmers from different states will shape the future strategy. To manufacture good-quality fabric, high-quality cotton is essential, and achieving this is a national goal. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India is on the path to glory, prosperity, and power.
'In a 'Viksit Bharat', we shouldn't have to import cotton from abroad. Meeting the nation's cotton needs with domestic high-quality produce is both a challenge and a target -- one that we must achieve together,' Chouhan said.
Chouhan also noted that while the textile industry often demands the removal of import duties to allow cheap foreign cotton, farmers argue that this hampers local cotton prices. Hence, the government must balance the interests of both farmers and the industry.
Reflecting on his 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan', Shri Chouhan mentioned that he had previously held a major meeting on soybeans in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and today's in-depth meeting in Coimbatore on cotton continues that same consultative process, focused on crop-wise and state-wise strategies for agricultural development. Gadkari Orders Spot-Wise Survey of Flood-Hit Areas, Seeks Report In Eight Days

1 2 Nagpur: In the wake of the rain that lashed Nagpur earlier this week, Union minister Nitin Gadkari directed the district administration to conduct a spot-wise assessment of the affected areas and submit a detailed report within eight days. In a high-level meeting at Niyojan Bhavan on Saturday to evaluate the rain-related situation and review various infrastructure projects, Gadkari took the administration to task over waterlogging reported across the city. Gadkari also expressed concern over the chaos caused by the downpour, which led to water entering homes in several low-lying localities, inconveniencing hundreds of residents. Sources said Gadkari again directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) to strengthen the city's stormwater drainage system, particularly in low-lying areas that were severely affected by recent rain. A key suggestion that emerged was to develop "stock model drains" in vulnerable low-lying zones to reduce waterlogging. Officials claimed that the flooding in Besa-Beltarodi and Manish Nagar was caused due to illegal constructions. Gadkari instructed officials to demolish unauthorized structures. MLA Khopde raised concerns about the situation in the Pardi area, while MLA Pravin Datke highlighted flooding near Metro stations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? During the meeting, Gadkari also pushed for key infrastructure approvals. He directed officials to sanction the Butibori–Umred Road under the Central Road Fund (CRF). The minister also asked for immediate approval of the DPR for the proposed national highway connecting Karanja, Lohari Sawanga, Bharshingi, Kharsoli, Narkhed, and the Madhya Pradesh border. In another major development, Gadkari approved the proposal for constructing a Dragon Palace Metro Station in Kamptee and instructed that necessary parking infrastructure be developed alongside. A road-widening proposal for facilitating Metro construction in the area was also approved. The proposal for a ropeway project in Koradi, connecting Shri Mahadev Tekdi and Hanuman Mandir under the Mahalakshmi Devasthan Trust was also discussed during the meeting. Gadkari directed the concerned authorities to submit a formal proposal, assuring funds for the project.

As UNSC president, Pakistan looks to up ante on Kashmir issue

File photo: Pakistani deputy PM and foreign minister Ishaq Dar (Picture credit: AP, ANI) NEW DELHI: As the month-long Pakistan presidency of the UNSC nears its business end, Islamabad is gearing up to organise an open debate on unresolved disputes around the world, looking to follow it up with a resolution urging member-states to use mechanisms available to them for pacific settlement of disputes. While the motive behind convening this signature event under the UN's maintenance of international peace and security agenda is to highlight the Kashmir issue, it's unlikely Pakistan will name J&K for fear of getting the resolution vetoed. UNSC resolutions need nine votes to pass, including concurrence of all five permanent members. Pakistani deputy PM & foreign minister Ishaq Dar will travel to New York to chair the event on July 22, which will likely be briefed by secretary general Antonio Guterres too. According to the Security Council Report, Pakistan aims to adopt the resolution urging full use of all Chapter VI mechanisms. Article 33 of the Chapter states that the parties to any dispute, the continuance of which is likely to endanger the maintenance of international peace and security, shall seek a solution by, among other things, mediation and arbitration. However, the same Article also says the parties can seek a solution through "other peaceful means of their own choice". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Monster Hunter Wilds – Exclusive Discounts! Pakistan also knows that, except China, all other permanent members continue to maintain that Kashmir is a bilateral issue. While underlining the Council's role in maintaining peace and security, many member-states stress any such attempt can't undermine a State's sovereignty or invoke settlement agreements without the consent of both parties. The open debate follows closed consultations called by Pakistan on May 5 to discuss India-Pakistan tensions after Pahalgam terrorist attack. Pakistan will also convene another signature event under its presidency, hoping to strengthen cooperation between the UN and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a 57-member body that has repeatedly expressed support for Islamabad's Kashmir agenda.

All About Varun Mohan, The Windsurf CEO Hired By Google To Strengthen Its AI

Google has hired a few team members from Windsurf, a rising AI infrastructure startup. The move is aimed at strengthening the tech behemoth's own AI code generation capabilities. At the centre of this development is Varun Mohan, the co-founder and CEO of Windsurf. Mr Mohan, along with co-founder Douglas Chen, joins Google following a high-stakes corporate tug-of-war that reportedly saw OpenAI in advanced talks to acquire Windsurf just last month. Who is Varun Mohan, and what makes his background significant in the AI space? Varun Mohan, who has Indian roots, was raised in Sunnyvale, California, by parents who migrated from India. He attended The Harker School in San Jose before moving on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned both a Bachelor's and Master of Engineering degree in Computer Science. According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr Mohan co-founded Windsurf in June 2021. Based in Mountain View, the startup is known for developing AI tools that streamline software development workflows. Under his leadership, Windsurf quickly rose to prominence as one of the most promising names in AI infrastructure. Before founding Windsurf, he spent over three years at Nuro, the autonomous vehicle company. He joined in early 2018 as a software engineer. By August 2019, he was the tech lead for autonomy infrastructure and later became tech lead manager in 2020. His resume also includes engineering internships at some of Silicon Valley's most recognised firms. In 2017, he interned at Databricks, focusing on machine learning systems. Earlier that year, he worked at Cloudian Inc., where he helped develop S3 storage infrastructure. In 2016, he was a software engineering intern at Quora, contributing to its data infrastructure. How Varun Mohan ended up at Google Windsurf reportedly caught the attention of OpenAI, which was in advanced talks to acquire the startup as recently as June 2025. But Google managed to pull off a strategic coup by hiring its core team, including Mr Mohan and Mr Chen, blocking OpenAI's bid. According to Reuters, Google is paying $2.4 billion in licensing fees to access certain WindSurf technologies under non-exclusive terms, as confirmed by a person familiar with the deal. Google will not acquire any equity or controlling interest in the company. The former Windsurf team will now join Google DeepMind, where they'll focus on agentic coding initiatives, particularly within the Gemini project.
