Man fined RM3,000 for threatening photographers at JB court

PETALING JAYA : A man who threatened to assault three press photographers outside the Johor Bahru court complex has been fined RM3,000 for criminal intimidation.
In a statement, Johor Bahru Selatan police chief Raub Selamat said the incident occurred at around 9am yesterday while the man was waiting for his case to be called at the Johor Bahru magistrates' court.
He said the suspect threatened to beat up the media for taking his photograph, with the incident caught on video by TV3 and another news outlet.
All three victims felt threatened and later lodged a police report, Raub added.
'The suspect was arrested in Bandar Baru Uda this morning by a team from the criminal investigation division of the Johor Bahru Selatan police headquarters.
'Investigations found that the incident occurred on the stairway leading to the courtroom, and video footage handed over to the police confirmed the utterance of the threat,' he said.
Raub stressed that the police would not tolerate any form of intimidation or threats against media personnel performing their duties.
'The safety and freedom of the press will be protected,' Raub said.
He also confirmed that the man was at the magistrates' court yesterday to face two other charges – one for mischief, for which he was fined RM7,000 (or one year's jail in default), and another for reckless driving, for which he was fined RM3,000.
The man paid all the fines.

'Another officer riding behind the victim also lost control of his motorcycle and sustained minor injuries. He is receiving outpatient treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital,' Bernama reported him as saying. Zamzuri said the officers were conducting surveillance to prevent illegal street racing activities in Kuala Lumpur. He said Amirul had been serving with the department since completing his training and had been attached to the intelligence/operations division for over a year.

Police to probe scuffle between cop, protester at anti-graft rally

PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a scuffle which broke out between a cop on duty and a protester at an anti-corruption rally attended by about 100 people in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said one of the rally-goers had lit a flare at about 4.30pm, producing thick smoke which could have endangered participants, security personnel on duty and members of the public nearby. Because of this, policemen on duty took preventive action, he said. 'As this preventive action was being taken, a scuffle broke out between the rally-goer and a policeman, leaving the latter with minor injuries. The scuffle was broken up by other policemen. Three reports were later lodged over the incident,' he said in a statement. Sulizmie said the investigation was into the use of criminal force against a public servant, the letting off of fireworks, and insulting behaviour. Around 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm today before moving to Dataran Merdeka through Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They urged Putrajaya to strengthen the legal system and reinforce the independence of anti-corruption institutions.

Federal CID chief to be transferred to border control agency
Shuhaily Zain will be replaced by M Kumar as CID director at Bukit Aman. PETALING JAYA : Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain will be transferred to the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency on July 1. Shuhaily, who was appointed federal CID chief in August 2023, confirmed the transfer with Berita Harian but declined to comment further. He will reportedly take over as the director-general of the border agency until June 30, 2027 and replaces Hazani Ghazali who retired in February. Johor police chief M Kumar will take over from Shuhaily as Bukit Aman CID director. Kumar's replacement has yet to be announced. In August last year, Malaysiakini reported that Shuhaily and deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay would be involved in a major shake-up of Bukit Aman's leadership. The news portal quoted a source as saying Ayob might be transferred to lead either the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency or the border agency, while Shuhaily was speculated to take over as director-general of the national anti-drugs agency. The then IGP Razarudin Husain rejected the report, which led to a police investigation into Malaysiakini over its article, with three of its journalists summoned to give their statements last year.
