Pasting of unauthorised posters mars the aesthetics in several railway stations
While large posters by trade unions mar the appearance of the railway stations, smaller posters from commercial institutions dot the coaches of the electric multiple units (EMUs). Several railway stations, including Guindy, Saidapet, Perambur Loco, Beach, Kodambakkam, and Thirumullaivoyal in and around the city, all have unauthorised posters adorning their walls, spoiling the aestethics and overall look. Even when these posters are removed, they leave lasting glue stains on the walls.
P. Balaraman, who regularly commutes from Guindy to Avadi, said unauthorised posters — mostly by railway trade unions and, in some places, political parties — are pasted in Saidapet railway station. This station is currently being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, incidentally. In some stations including Perambur Loco and Hindu College, posters of private functions are also installed near the railway tracks or on the walls of public conveniences.
Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said the Southern Railway, which creates awareness about Swachh Bharat by organising Swachhta Pakhwada campaigns to keep railway stations clean, should similarly create awareness among railway staff and various union members to avoid pasting posters on railway premises. He said announcements through the public address systems installed in stations should also be used to spread awareness.
A senior official of the Chennai Division said that pasting posters in suburban trains or at railway stations is a punishable offence carrying fines under Section 166 of the Railway Act, 1989, and is enforced by the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The RPF has been conducting a sustained campaign to remove unauthorised posters from railway premises, with nearly 30 cases filed against offenders. Regarding the posters put up by trade unions, the railway official said the Southern Railway, based on the advice of the Railway Board, has allotted separate spaces in various railway stations for recognised trade unions to display union-related information and would soon take steps to enforce this.

Bhopal: Saddened after his wife walked out following a domestic quarrel, a 28-year-old man in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh attempted suicide by jumping from a 35-foot-high railway overbridge. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at Birlanagar Railway Station. The man, identified as Mukesh Ahirwar of Hajira area, survived the fall with only minor injuries. Police said Mukesh had an argument with his wife on Friday night, after which she left home without informing anyone. Consumed by worry, he searched for her the entire night, but could not trace her. By Saturday morning, Mukesh reportedly began drinking heavily. Witnesses said he appeared intoxicated and emotional when he climbed onto the overbridge railing. Moments before jumping, he sang the old Bollywood classic "Tujhko Pukare Mera Pyar, Aaja Main To Luta Hoon Teri Chah Mein". Seconds later, he leapt onto the tracks below, as eyewitnesses told police. They informed Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, who reached the spot. "Fortunately, there was no train movement at that moment," an RPF officer said. They rescued Mukesh from the tracks and shifted him to the hospital. Doctors said he suffered only bruises and abrasions, calling his survival "a miracle". After treatment, Mukesh was discharged the same day. During questioning, Mukesh admitted he felt life was meaningless without his wife. RPF personnel counselled him and later handed him over to his family, who were asked to provide emotional support and seek professional help to prevent any further attempts.

UP: Train passenger travelling with over Rs 29 lakh cash held
Chandauli (UP), Jul 27 (PTI) A man travelling in the Gurumukhi Express train with Rs 29.67 lakh cash was arrested by the GRP and RPF sleuths in Mughalsarai on Sunday evening, officials said. Mafijul Sheikh, a resident of West Bengal's Birbhum district, was nabbed at the DDU junction after he could not produce any valid documents related to the huge amount of cash he was carrying, they said. Sunil Singh, GRP station in-charge of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Railway Station, said he received information that a large amount of money was being taken to West Bengal by Gurumukhi Express. Following this, he started a special surveillance at the station along with RPF and as soon as the train reached the platform, the team started searching, he said. During this, a young man travelling in the general bogie of the train was found suspicious. Upon searching him, the officials found bundles of notes amounting to a total of Rs 29.67 lakh from the bag he was carrying, Singh said. Ganja worth Rs 3.67 cr seized, 126 peddlers nabbed so far in 2025: NF Railway
Agency: Guwahati, Jul 27 (PTI) The Northeast Frontier Railway on Sunday said it has recovered ganja worth Rs 3.67 crore so far this year from different stations in its jurisdiction. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma in a statement said that since the beginning of the year, the RPF has recovered 3,706.94 kg of ganja. During this period, the RPF also apprehended 126 drug peddlers in connection with these seizures, he said. 'It is worth mentioning that the RPF of NF Railway remains committed to the goal of a drug-free nation and maintains constant vigilance against the smuggling and transportation of contraband items at various railway stations and onboard trains," Sharma said. He said that from July 17 to 24, RPF teams carried out operations at Agartala, Katihar, Bagdogra, Rangapara North, Lumding and Guwahati railway stations and trains. 'As a result of the sustained efforts, approximately 168.67 kg of ganja valued at around Rs 16.83 lakh were recovered and two individuals were apprehended in connection with the seizure," the statement said. In separate actions during the same period, RPF personnel also apprehended seven individuals involved in the theft of passenger belongings and successfully recovered six stolen mobile phones, one laptop and Rs 1.19 lakh in cash from them, Sharma said.
