Pasting of unauthorised posters mars the aesthetics in several railway stations

The menace of unauthorised pasting of posters is not only prevalent at bus stops and public places in the Chennai Corporation limits, but is also rather prominent in railway stations and suburban trains. The pasting of posters, , mars the appearance of several railway stations in the city, even as officials at these stations fear removing the posters due to their sensitive nature. While large posters by trade unions mar the appearance of the railway stations, smaller posters from commercial institutions dot the coaches of the electric multiple units (EMUs). Several railway stations, including Guindy, Saidapet, Perambur Loco, Beach, Kodambakkam, and Thirumullaivoyal in and around the city, all have unauthorised posters adorning their walls, spoiling the aestethics and overall look. Even when these posters are removed, they leave lasting glue stains on the walls. P. Balaraman, who regularly commutes from Guindy to Avadi, said unauthorised posters — mostly by railway trade unions and, in some places, political parties — are pasted in Saidapet railway station. This station is currently being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, incidentally. In some stations including Perambur Loco and Hindu College, posters of private functions are also installed near the railway tracks or on the walls of public conveniences. Consumer activist T. Sadagopan said the Southern Railway, which creates awareness about Swachh Bharat by organising Swachhta Pakhwada campaigns to keep railway stations clean, should similarly create awareness among railway staff and various union members to avoid pasting posters on railway premises. He said announcements through the public address systems installed in stations should also be used to spread awareness. A senior official of the Chennai Division said that pasting posters in suburban trains or at railway stations is a punishable offence carrying fines under Section 166 of the Railway Act, 1989, and is enforced by the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The RPF has been conducting a sustained campaign to remove unauthorised posters from railway premises, with nearly 30 cases filed against offenders. Regarding the posters put up by trade unions, the railway official said the Southern Railway, based on the advice of the Railway Board, has allotted separate spaces in various railway stations for recognised trade unions to display union-related information and would soon take steps to enforce this.

Station redevelopment works slow down suburban services on Chengalpattu-Beach route

Passengers of the suburban train services on the south section have been switching over to Metro trains as the Electrical multiple units (EMUs) from Chengalpattu to Beach via Tambaram have been facing operational delays during the morning peak hours. This section has the highest commuter population — 9 lakh of the total 18 lakh who travel daily in suburban trains. T. Vinoth Kumar, a regular commuter, said while the Southern Railway operates several services during the morning peak hours, all the trains are halted before the Egmore Railway Station to accommodate both the fast and slow services on the same platform, thereby causing delays. After the fourth line between the Egmore and Beach stations got commissioned, the fast trains, which used to get precedence till Beach, have been operated as slow services from the Egmore station. 'Railway officials must take steps to prevent the operational delays,' Mr. Kumar said. A. Joshna, another commuter, said the Egmore Railway Station had become a bottleneck, as the fast trains that operated on mail and express track used to halt at Platform 11 and would then be redirected to the third line or fast line towards Beach with stops at Park and Fort Stations. However, after the fourth line was commissioned, the platform where fast trains halted at the Fort station was demolished. The Railway officials are now forced to accommodate both the fast and slow trains on the track for slow trains from Egmore to Beach station, leading to congestion and delays, she said. A senior official of the Chennai Division said they were working to prevent the delays caused by speed restrictions imposed in view of the ongoing station redevelopment works, including at Guindy, Saidapet, and Mambalam, under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. While the Railway officials are working to remove the speed restrictions in phases, it is not feasible for fast trains to skip any of the two stations (Park and Fort), as they are vital links to the Central Railway Station and the Moore Market Complex Station, and the Secretariat respectively.

Arriva signs €300m contract with Škoda for electric trains in Czechia

Arriva Group has confirmed a €300m ($349.3m) contract for Škoda to deliver a fleet of electric multiple units for Czechia, bolstering its commitment to sustainable and efficient passenger transport in Europe. Škoda will supply 22 modern electric trains, designed to reach speeds of up to 200km/h, which will enhance the travel experience for passengers in Czechia. The investment follows a 15-year, €750m contract awarded by the Czech Ministry of Transport to Arriva last month for the operation of long-distance services and electric rolling stock. This contract entrusts the company with the operation of long-distance rail services along one of Czechia's most vital transport corridors, linking Prague, Pilsen, and Western Bohemia. Scheduled to commence service in December 2028, the EMUs will reduce travel times, offering a viable and eco-friendly alternative to car usage. Approximately 80% of the supply chain for the new fleet will be local to Czechia, reflecting Arriva's dedication to fostering strong local partnerships and stimulating regional economic development. Arriva Group mainland Europe managing director Sian Leydon said: 'Our partnership with Škoda is a significant milestone for our rail operations in Czechia and a strong demonstration of our ambition to grow in liberalising European markets. 'By investing in modern trains and partnering with established local suppliers, we're directly contributing to sustainable economic growth and driving the shift towards greener travel. We're thrilled our latest fleet investment will provide passengers with faster, reliable and sustainable alternatives to road travel.' The introduction of these trains builds upon Arriva's expanding electric rail operations in Czechia. Following the successful launch of electric trains in the Pilsen region in 2023, the company continues to grow its presence in the Czech rail market, which it entered in 2013. Now, Arriva employs over 3,500 individuals, operates more than 1,800 buses and 100 trains, and serves millions of passengers annually. Alstom wins $2.3bn contract from LIRR and Metro-North Railroad

Alstom has secured a contract valued at $2.3bn to supply 316 commuter rail cars to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad, divisions of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The order also includes an option for up to 242 additional cars, potentially increasing the contract's value by up to $1.5bn. Under the contract, Alstom will supply its M-9A passenger vehicles, which are designed to replace the four-decade-old M-3 cars. The vehicles will be electric multiple units (EMUs) and operate independently on electrified tracks without the need for a separate locomotive. Approximately half of the rail cars will serve LIRR, the nation's busiest commuter railroad, with the remainder allocated to Metro-North, which caters to the northern New York and Connecticut suburbs. The new trains will adhere to the MTA's stringent cybersecurity standards, ensuring the protection of internal systems and external communications. This order will bring Alstom's total production for the MTA to around 5,400 commuter and subway cars. Alstom Americas president Michael Keroullé said: 'With the M-9A project, Alstom looks forward to delivering great commuter trains and good jobs for New Yorkers. We are grateful to the MTA for putting their trust in us and building on the long history that Alstom has with the MTA and with manufacturing state-of-the-art trains in America. 'These new trains not only provide passengers with greater comfort, convenience, and amenities; they will also be made in our New York factories, by New York labour. The investment the MTA makes in these train cars is an investment in local communities throughout the Empire State.' The M-9A passenger vehicles are part of Alstom's Adessia commuter rail portfolio, known for its sustainability and adaptability to various urban and suburban environments. These modern cars promise a quieter, smoother, and more reliable experience for commuters. They will be equipped with amenities such as USB charging ports, wheelchair spaces, accessible restrooms, along with extra-wide doors to expedite boarding and alighting. The trains can operate at speeds between 120-200km/h on both electrified and non-electrified networks. The contract is set to generate nearly 300 jobs at Alstom's production facilities in New York. The car body shells will be manufactured at Alstom's Plant 4 in Hornell, while the bogies will be assembled in Plattsburgh. Alstom's site in West Mifflin will produce the propulsion systems. In a related development, Alstom has secured a $1.9bn order from SNCF Voyageurs for 96 RER NG trainsets for the RER D line, a project fully financed by Île-de-France Mobilités and approved on 10 April 2025. Commuters want shifting of north-bound suburban trains to ease operation of suburban trains from MMC to Beach railway station

The suburban commuters on the west section who have been complaining about delayed arrival and departure of the electrical multiple units (EMUs) want the officials of Southern Railway to explore the option of shifting the suburban train services of north section from Moore market complex (MMC) station to Beach railway station. A section of commuters as well as railway activists hope the shifting of at least a small portion to Beach station would provide seamless operation of EMUs for the west section. The west section of suburban network is the longest section of the four sections of suburban services operated by Chennai division with train services operated to as long as Thiruttani and Arakkonam. It also has the highest number of EMU services with nearly four lakh commuters travelling daily. The option to explore the viability of shifting the north-bound suburban trains comes in the wake of EMU services towards west section daily being delayed by a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes, that too during morning and evening peak hours. Also the absence of adequate platforms at the MMC and the operational delays caused by the cross over of the suburban trains from MMC to the slow line beyond Basin Bridge railway station - the point where mail and express trains also pass through. Social activist T. Sadagopan said a large number of suburban as well as mail and express trains originate from the Dr. MGR Central station. Moreover unlike the south section of Beach to Chengalpattu via Tambaram which has few operational issues, the west section has several crossovers of EMUs including Tiruvallur, Pattabhiram and Avadi. In this situation provision of a dedicated corridor for EMUs to Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam stations from MMC would pave way for seamless operation of suburban trains. Due to several crossovers, the Chennai division has given speed restrictions for loco drivers of EMUs to operate at 15 kilometres per hour instead of 30 kmph. Railway activist also point out that with the shifting of the operation of the north section to Beach railway station commuters would find it easy to access Tambaram- and Velachery-bound trains by switching just the platforms. S. Krishna, a regular commuter from Ponneri, said the Beach railway station is already a transport hub and by shifting the EMUs from MMC station to Beach station the commuters of north section would have better access to suburban trains. This would also help avoide the delays caused by north-bound suburban trains waiting to crossover from MMC, to mail and express trains at Basin bridge station. A senior official of the Chennai division of Southern Railway said a feasibility study would be done on the suggestions for shifting the suburban trains to Beach station.
