#SHOWBIZ: Money, Covid-19 delayed P. Ramlee-inspired film
Director Megat Sharizal said the film, set in the 1970s and exploring the aftermath of P. Ramlee's death, was delayed for two years, mainly due to budget constraints.
He and his production team decided to secure sufficient funding before completing the film.
"As independent filmmakers, financial resources are always a challenge, even though we received RM1 million from the Digital Content Fund under Finas."
Megat said this at a recent press conference and launch event for the film.
"We believe that the story in 'Mencari Ramlee' remains compelling and relevant, despite the two-year wait."
He said the film's screening at the 2025 Rotterdam International Film Festival generated interest from potential collaborators.
"My goal is to avoid filming without adequate funding, as I don't want the project to stall.
"Following the interest from various parties, I felt confident enough to proceed with the Compulsory Screening Scheme and other steps."
He added that funding wasn't the only challenge — the Covid-19 pandemic also delayed the film's release after its completion in 2023.
Regarding the casting, Megat said that actors Tony Eusoff and Datin Sofia Jane were his top choices.
"In my mind, Tony was always the perfect Zakaria. I also envisioned Sofia as Zaiton — I've admired her work for a long time."
Others in the cast include Mimi Lana, Beto Kusyairy, Amerul Affendi, Bront Palarae, Sharifah Amani, Vanidah Imran, Azhan Rani, and a special appearance by P. Ramlee's granddaughter, Najua.
Megat expressed hope that audiences will embrace the film.
"My aim is to tell a story, and I sincerely hope the audience will connect with it."
He said he took inspiration from Nik Amir Mustapha, director of "Imaginur", whose surprise box office success encouraged him.
"Mencari Ramlee" unfolds its narrative starting on May 30, 1973, the day after P. Ramlee's death.
The story follows Zakaria (Tony Eusoff), a P. Ramlee impersonator struggling to make ends meet as the icon's popularity wanes.

The results speak for themselves. Unifi ranked top in four performance categories in Opensignal's November 2024 Mobile Network Experience Report, reinforcing its position as one of Malaysia's leading mobile networks: > 5G Download Speed > 5G Video Experience > Games Experience > Video Experience These awards underscore Unifi Mobile's efforts to meet the growing demands of today's digital lifestyles with fast, reliable connectivity. There were two challenges: 'Game siapa lag, dia kalah!' and 'Lumba load video.' In the first challenge, Amin faced off with participants in a mobile gaming showdown. The network that lags loses. The second tested streaming speed, with both sides racing to see who could load a video faster. For the showdown, Fattah raised the stakes by promising RM1,000 to any participant who could beat him. Based on their experience during the challenges, most passersby agreed that Unifi delivered on speed, video quality and gaming performance, thereby living up to its recognition in Opensignal's latest report. Catch the full street challenge on Unifi's social media accounts. 2 New Tracks From Malaysian Acts Iskandar Zulkarnain & ALPHA Dive Into Love & Growth
These two recent local releases highlight the range of Malaysian music today. One marks a heartfelt solo comeback, while the other shows a softer side of a rising boy group. Iskandar Zulkarnain – 'Sewaktu Bahagia' After some time away from the spotlight former Projektor Band vocalist Iskandar Zulkarnain makes a strong return with 'Sewaktu Bahagia,' a new solo single released under Luncai Emas. Known for his emotionally driven vocal style, Iskandar once again leans into heartbreak – this time with a song written by Aidil AF and Jeremy Erskine, inspired by their real-life experiences with love and loss. Backed by the guidance of Dato' M. Nasir and the fresh production touch of Hidayat Nasir from Pitahati, 'Sewaktu Bahagia' captures the rawness of emotional upheaval. The lyrics paint a picture of broken trust and fading joy, all set to a classic pop rock arrangement that feels both nostalgic and current. Iskandar hopes the song will stand the test of time and resonate across generations. The song is now available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms. ALPHA – 'P. Ramlee & Saloma' Following their high-energy debut 'Mona Lisa (Bang Bang),' seven-member boy group ALPHA returns with something entirely different. Their second single 'P. Ramlee & Saloma' is a ballad that reveals a more introspective, emotional side of the group. Formed through the reality competition Big Stage Alpha, the group – made up of Daniel, Izat, Rizal, Ariel, Araff, Ray-D and Sky – was selected from hundreds of aspiring male contestants across Southeast Asia. Their goal has always been to redefine what a pop group can be, and this new single reflects that direction. The song was produced by Justin Seow, Mohsein Kush and RFE under Rocketfuel Entertainment. It positions ALPHA not just as performers, but as a cohesive group with musical range. While 'Mona Lisa' introduced them with attitude and flair, 'P. Ramlee & Saloma' focuses on sincerity, showcasing their vocal strength and artistic growth. The song is now streaming on all major platforms, with a music video release coming soon.
