Actress Sofia Jane Questions GSC's Inconvenient Screening Time For 'Mencari Ramlee'
Director and author of 'Gantung: Musketeer Code', Nadia Khan, recently criticised Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and TGV Cinemas after learning that the former would be pulling the film from cinemas, reportedly due to low audience turnout. She argued that the premiere date and screening times were poorly scheduled, making it difficult for Malaysian audiences to attend. GSC has yet to provide an explanation, and it appears they may need to offer another soon. An actress recently took to social media to question the company after learning that a film she starred in would also be pulled from cinemas. Here's what happened: Earlier this week, actress Sofia Jane took to both Instagram and Twitter to speak about 'Mencari Ramlee', the film in which she stars alongside Tony Eusoff and Mimi Lana, and GSC's screening schedule. She revealed that she and the rest of the team involved in the project had been informed that the film would be withdrawn from GSC outlets due to low audience turnout. However, she questioned the reasoning behind the chosen screening times and called for an explanation. 'My question is, why are the time selections that make it impossible for some to catch it? If you decide to just have one time slot, why can't you dedicate a decent time that you know can be accessible? Till today, after years in this industry, I still can't get a decent answer,' she wrote in her posts. She added that, while she understands how business works, she struggled to make sense of the decision, particularly if GSC genuinely wants local cinema to thrive. 'I'm not asking for 'Mencari Ramlee' alone, but for all the others that are coming your way. We both know why the industry is slow in filling bums in seats. But it doesn't help having a time slot that makes it hard for the few who want to watch it,' the 53-year-old elaborated. Shortly after her post went viral, filmmaker Nadia Khan responded, stating that she is still awaiting a reply from GSC regarding her own enquiries about the screening of her film 'Gantung: Musketeer Code'. Both public figures concluded that cinemas, particularly when it comes to local films, may no longer be what they once were. Netizens remain divided, with some criticising GSC for failing to prioritise local productions, while others argue that the cinema chain should not bear all the blame, pointing instead to the film's lack of promotion. What are your thoughts on this issue? Is GSC truly to be blamed for the lack of views, or is this a case of a lack of promotion from the film's marketing team? #SHOWBIZ: Tony revels in portraying P. Ramlee
TONY Eusoff, the 48-year-old actor, has described playing the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee onscreen and in theatre as a significant honour in his two-decade-long artistic career. Tony, whose full name is Anthony Joseph Hermas Rajiman, shared that he never tires of portraying the legendary artiste. "I've acted in the 'P. Ramlee The Musical' theatre production and the 'Saloma' TV mini series, which is based on the life story of the late Puan Sri Saloma and previously starred Nabila Huda. "If it's Saloma's story, there must be a P. Ramlee character in it. I never get tired of playing P. Ramlee because he's a legend, an icon of our arts and culture," he said recently at the premiere of his film, 'Mencari Ramlee'. Tony also revealed he had previously dreamt of acting in a P. Ramlee film. "The first time I played P. Ramlee was in the 'Saloma' biopic. I watched many films which starred him and thoroughly studied his character — his movements, his speech, and so on. "Perhaps because I often watched P. Ramlee's films every night, I even dreamt of acting in one of them. "But I didn't meet him in my dreams. I only dreamt of acting as P. Ramlee, but it wasn't clear, and the dreams were in black and white," he said. Speaking about his role in 'Mencari Ramlee', Tony admitted that he initially felt unqualified to play the lead character. "I see many other actors who could play P. Ramlee and sing better, like Musly Ramlee, but the director had his vision. "I asked Megat Sharizal, the director of 'Mencari Ramlee', and he told me he chose me for the main role because he believed in my talent to give the best performance for the character. "Perhaps it's because we've been friends for a long time, and directors often cast actors from among their friends to collaborate on films," he said. 'Mencari Ramlee' also stars Sofia Jane and Mimi Lana, and began screening in cinemas yesterday.

#SHOWBIZ: Mimifly dedicates 'Sahabat' to 'loving big brother' Jojo
KUALA LUMPUR: Singer Mimifly, whose real name is Mimi Norhisham, has released a heartfelt tribute to her "loving big brother, sifu, and soul mate," Jojo Hasan Baias, who passed away from a heart ailment on Jan 26. Titled Sahabat, Mimi's heartfelt tribute to Jojo premiered as a music video at 11.11am today on her official YouTube channel. Sahabat, co-composed by Mimi and Bo Curley with lyrics by Mimi, serves as a deeply personal farewell to her dear friend and fellow One Nation Emcees member. In a statement released today, Mimi shared: "Our friendship went beyond music — it was built on trust, loyalty, and shared dreams. Sahabat captures that bond in both melody and words, and I've poured all my emotions into the lyrics as a message of gratitude, remembrance, and love." The music video brings these emotions to life through a retro-inspired visual concept, thoughtfully crafted with Mimi's own creative input. "The nostalgic feel, vintage styling, and expressive cinematography were carefully planned to reflect the soul of the song," she explained. Mimi has once again collaborated with Konda Kondi Studio, a production team that she feels shares a "similar wavelength, creative synergy, and commitment to storytelling with heart." Sahabat has also been chosen as the official end-credit song for the film Mencari Ramlee, which premieres on June 19. "I hope that this music video will resonate with fans and new audiences alike — serving as both a tribute to a beloved friend and a reminder of how music preserves the people and memories we carry in our hearts." Mimi will also donate proceeds from the song to Jojo's widow, Siti Rohayu Saharudin, whom she regards as family. "Thank you, Jojo, for the laughter, the stages we shared, and the joy you brought to my life from the beginning," Mimi expressed. "One Nation Emcees was not just a group; we were family."

#SHOWBIZ: Money, Covid-19 delayed P. Ramlee-inspired film
AFTER navigating several hurdles, "Mencari Ramlee", a film inspired by the life and legacy of cinematic icon Tan Sri P. Ramlee, will hit cinemas on June 19. Director Megat Sharizal said the film, set in the 1970s and exploring the aftermath of P. Ramlee's death, was delayed for two years, mainly due to budget constraints. He and his production team decided to secure sufficient funding before completing the film. "As independent filmmakers, financial resources are always a challenge, even though we received RM1 million from the Digital Content Fund under Finas." Megat said this at a recent press conference and launch event for the film. "We believe that the story in 'Mencari Ramlee' remains compelling and relevant, despite the two-year wait." He said the film's screening at the 2025 Rotterdam International Film Festival generated interest from potential collaborators. "My goal is to avoid filming without adequate funding, as I don't want the project to stall. "Following the interest from various parties, I felt confident enough to proceed with the Compulsory Screening Scheme and other steps." He added that funding wasn't the only challenge — the Covid-19 pandemic also delayed the film's release after its completion in 2023. Regarding the casting, Megat said that actors Tony Eusoff and Datin Sofia Jane were his top choices. "In my mind, Tony was always the perfect Zakaria. I also envisioned Sofia as Zaiton — I've admired her work for a long time." Others in the cast include Mimi Lana, Beto Kusyairy, Amerul Affendi, Bront Palarae, Sharifah Amani, Vanidah Imran, Azhan Rani, and a special appearance by P. Ramlee's granddaughter, Najua. Megat expressed hope that audiences will embrace the film. "My aim is to tell a story, and I sincerely hope the audience will connect with it." He said he took inspiration from Nik Amir Mustapha, director of "Imaginur", whose surprise box office success encouraged him. "Mencari Ramlee" unfolds its narrative starting on May 30, 1973, the day after P. Ramlee's death. The story follows Zakaria (Tony Eusoff), a P. Ramlee impersonator struggling to make ends meet as the icon's popularity wanes.
