2nd phase of TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan launched across state
In Pune, the second phase was launched last week by the civic body. Dr Prashant Bothe, city TB officer, Pune Municipal Corporation, said, 'We have identified a target population of over 6 lakh people who will be screened under the campaign. The screening started last week and the majority of the target population includes slum dwellers, migrants, and close contacts of TB patients.'
Dr Sandeep Sangale, state joint director (TB and leprosy), said that in those districts and municipal corporations where the campaign was implemented in the first phase, only the high-risk population will be screened. 'In newly-included districts, too, the teams will map high-risk areas and populations as per the central guidelines. Based on this mapping, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and community engagement activities will be conducted,' he said.
Dr Bothe added that besides the high-risk population, the target population also includes individuals over 60, those with a disease history, smokers, diabetics, malnourished individuals, those living with HIV, and other such vulnerable groups. 'We have floated tenders to appoint more teams, ambulances and X-ray machines for the campaign. Screening will be done through X-ray and NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test,' he said.

13 nikshay mitras felicitated for contribution to TB-free campaign
Dehradun: Thirteen individuals and organisations who contributed to the care of tuberculosis (TB) patients were felicitated by Uttarakhand governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (retd) at the TB-Free India campaign event organised by the state health department in Dehradun on Tuesday. These donors, called nikshay mitra, aided TB patients at three levels by providing nutritional, diagnostic and vocational support. During the programme at the governor's house, teams from Dehradun, Champawat and Rudraprayag districts were commended for their work in TB elimination. Emphasising state's vision to eliminate TB by this year, the governor said it was not possible through govt efforts alone but required public participation and collective resolve. "I adopted 75 TB patients so far, of whom 62 fully recovered. If we all come forward to support the affected people, several precious lives could be saved," he said. Last year, the state recorded 29,000 TB cases, with the highest number in Dehradun (9,000), according to data from the health department. Treatment supporters honoured included community volunteers Supriya, Zoya, Kanak, and Asha workers Neeraj, Neera Kandari, Meena Kala, Ganga Bhandari, Saroj, Neeru Jain, Pooja Joshi, Shikha Arora, Nirmala Joshi and Sachi Tiwari. TB Champions, a title given to patients who recovered, were also honoured at the event.

Aurobindo, Cipla, Viatris to make, market long-acting injectable HIV drug
Generic drugmakers Aurobindo Pharma, Cipla and Viatris will develop, manufacture and supply long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB LA) for HIV treatment in 133 countries. This follows ViiV Healthcare, a company focused on HIV medicines and majority owned by GSK with Pfizer and Shionogi as shareholders, and Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) extending their voluntary licensing agreement to enable access to long-acting injectable HIV treatment. It builds on the voluntary license for CAB LA for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The announcement, on extending their agreement, comes in the wake of an updated guidance from World Health Organization (WHO) recommending long-acting injectable cabotegravir + rilpivirine as an HIV treatment option. Existing licensees Aurobindo, Cipla and Viatris will consequently be able to develop, manufacture and supply generic versions of CAB LA, for use in combination with long-acting rilpivirine, for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents weighing at least 35kg subject to required regulatory approvals being obtained, Aurobindo Pharma said on Tuesday. Vice chairman and MD of Aurobindo Pharma K. Nithyananda Reddy said the company remains committed to leveraging its global supply capabilities to make the vital combination long-acting injection therapy widely available and affordable. The consideration by ViiV and MPP to include the private market in royalty-bearing countries is a critical step toward expanding access across both public and private sectors, he said.

Strengthen RBSK to provide better care for children: Mysuru ZP CEO
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer S. Yukesh Kumar has directed officials to strengthen the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) and ensure better medical care for children of Anganwadis and schools who are suffering from health issues. At a district-level review meeting of national health programmes, Mr. Kumar instructed officials to conduct regular health screenings at schools and Anganwadis to identify diseases at an early stage and provide timely treatment. 'Children with heart ailments must be provided with specialised treatment and surgeries at superspecialty hospitals to help reduce infant mortality,' he said. Mr. Kumar said that follow-up and completion of treatment for children referred for further care must be ensured and called for necessary action based on reports from the district-level technical expert committee in cases of maternal and infant deaths to identify lapses and initiate action against those responsible. He instructed officials to achieve 100% targets under the Kayakalpa scheme in the financial year 2025-26, and directed all health centres to reach 100% progress in the next three months. Mr. Kumar stressed the importance of strict biomedical waste disposal at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs as per government guidelines and added that cases of Covid-19, Influenza H1N1, dog bites, and snake bites must be mandatorily reviewed with appropriate action taken. He directed officials to bring down the TB death rate to below 5%, expedite leprosy surveys, and report all suspected cases immediately. Mr. Kumar instructed that Manochaitanya counselling centres should operate every Tuesday, and photos of activities should be filed for documentation. Officials from District Health and Family Welfare Departments, including RCH officers, TB control officers, leprosy eradication officers, vector-borne disease control officers, surveillance officers, and taluk medical officers attended the meeting.
