Ex-American Airlines flight attendant sentenced to 18 years in prison for filming young girls using bathroom on Boston flight

The five girls Thompson secretly recorded were 6, 9, 11, and two were 14, court documents show. Advertisement In this photo provided by the law firm Lewis & Llewellyn LLP, an iPhone is taped to the back of a toilet seat on an American Airlines flight from Charlotte, N.C., to Boston, on Sept. 2, 2023. Uncredited/Associated Press 'He robbed five young girls of their innocence and belief in the goodness of the world and the people they would encounter in it, instead leaving them with fear, mistrust, insecurity and sadness,' Leah B. Foley, the US attorney for the District of Massachusetts, wrote in the memo. In March, under the terms of a plea agreement, Thompson pleaded guilty in federal court in Boston to charges of attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor. Prosecutors sought a 20-year prison sentence while Thompson's lawyer, Scott Lauer, requested 15 years, court records show. Although Thompson's conduct was 'serious and disturbing,' it was 'purely voyeuristic,' Lauer wrote in a sentencing memo, noting that Thompson had never before been in trouble with the law. Advertisement 'Mr. Thompson's conduct took place at a time in his life when he was isolated, struggling with depression and excessive alcohol use,' Lauer wrote. Thompson has 'come to view this arrest as a much-needed intervention and opportunity to address the corrosive behaviors which resulted in his offenses,' Lauer's memo said. 'Now sober and with a better appreciation of the need for sex offender specific treatment, Mr. Thompson intends to avail himself of necessary rehabilitative services to the fullest extent possible.' According to prosecutors, Thompson had worked for American Airlines for more than a decade when he attempted to record the 14-year-old girl on Sept. 2, 2023. The girl was waiting for a bathroom in the main cabin when Thompson told her she could use the first-class bathroom and escorted her to the front of the plane. He told her the toilet seat was broken. The girl noticed red stickers on the underside of the toilet seat lid that read 'INOPERATIVE CATERING EQUIPMENT' with 'SEAT BROKEN' handwritten on one of the stickers. It wasn't until after she flushed that she noticed an iPhone with its flashlight on under the stickers, court documents said. The girl took photos of the phone and told her parents, who told the crew. Her father confronted Thompson, who locked himself in the bathroom with his phone and restored the device to factory settings, wiping it clean, documents said. When investigators searched Thompson's iCloud account, they found evidence of the four other incidents. They also found 50 images of a child who flew as an unaccompanied minor on a flight in July 2023. 'The joy and innocence that once lit her face have been replaced by distance and caution,' one of the girl's parents said in an impact statement. Advertisement 'She didn't just lose her innocence that day — she lost her sense of the world," the parent said. According to court documents, the parent of another one of the girls said, 'no child, especially during their formative years, should be burdened with such a horrific truth. The innocence she once had has been stolen.' At Thompson's sentencing hearing Wednesday, US District Court Judge Julia E. Kobick said his behavior was 'appalling.' She sentenced Thompson to 222 months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release. Kobick also ordered Thompson to undergo substance abuse and sex offender treatment programs. Thompson apologized in court, according to the Associated Press. He said his actions were 'selfish, perverse, and wrong.' Tonya Alanez can be reached at

Division leaders clash as Blue Jays, Tigers begin series

(Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers each have 60 victories, but the two division leaders have been heading in opposite directions. The Blue Jays have won five of their six games since the All-Star break, opening up a four-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the American League East. Detroit has seen its lead in the AL Central shrink to eight games over the Cleveland Guardians after dropping nine of its past 10 games. Now the Tigers will host the Blue Jays for four games beginning on Thursday night. Detroit was swept in a three-game series this week by the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, the last-place team in the National League Central. 'It's a good testament to just getting up and moving on,' Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling said, according to the Detroit News. 'It's a new day and the biggest thing, it's a new series. Regardless of what's happened these past couple, we have to move on. We know they've been playing good baseball, but it's a new series and that's awesome for us. We get a new start.' Reese Olson (4-3, 2.71 ERA) will start the series opener for the Tigers. He tossed five-plus scoreless innings in Texas on Friday, allowing two hits and a walk but still needing 90 pitches to get 15 outs. Olson has made three starts since a finger injury on his throwing hand forced him to the injured list in mid-May. He has given up just three runs in 14 1/3 innings (1.88 ERA) during that span. 'I felt a little more normal than I had my last two starts back,' he said after the outing against the Rangers. 'Still too many three-ball counts, but I felt more normal, for sure.' Olson stymied the Blue Jays in his last start before going on the IL, holding them to one hit and a walk in six scoreless innings on May 17. He is 1-0 with a 0.55 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against Toronto. He will be opposed by Eric Lauer (5-2, 2.80 ERA), who is coming off one of his best outings of the season. Lauer held the San Francisco Giants to two runs on two hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and no walks on Saturday. That equaled his longest start this year. 'What he's been able to do, to come in and just give us a chance to win every game, it's invaluable,' infielder Ernie Clement said. 'Tip of the cap to him. He's probably been our unsung MVP so far.' Lauer, who pitched in South Korea last year, has given the starting staff an unexpected boost. 'I'm just trying to make sure that I stick in the rotation, honestly,' Lauer said. 'That's what I want to do, and that's where I think I can help the team best.' Lauer is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA in three career starts against Detroit. He took a no-decision against Olson and the Tigers on May 17 after yielding one run in three innings. Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. appears to be heating up entering the series, having reached base 11 times over the past four games. He knocked in two runs and scored twice in an 8-4 win over the Yankees on Wednesday. In contrast, Tigers All-Star outfielder Riley Greene is 3-for-21 with 10 strikeouts since the All-Star break. Manager A.J. Hinch rested him Wednesday as Detroit lost 6-1 to the Pirates. 'Everybody needs a blow every now and then. He looks like he's had a long week,' Hinch said.

Batting depth lifts Jays to 6-3 win over Giants

TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays may have star power, but they've had contributions from unsung heroes this season. That happened Saturday afternoon when Toronto's 7-8-9 hitters accounted for all six runs and went a collective 5-for-10 in the team's 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Rogers Centre. Second baseman Ernie Clement finished with an RBI. Third baseman Will Wagner hit a two-run double. And catcher Tyler Heineman had one of the best games of his career, hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning to finish 2-for-3 with three RBI. Blue Jays manager John Schneider credits his club's hitting coaches for this lower-lineup success. 'It starts with Pop, and Lou and Hunter,' said Schneider of Toronto's hitting staff. 'And really diving into what these guys are good at and how they are going to get pitched and having a plan. And then it's the guys buying into that plan and sticking with it. It's not easy to do when you don't play every day and you're hitting 7-8-9. Story continues below advertisement 'The tendency is to chase results and the guys aren't doing that.' Starter Eric Lauer picked up his fifth win of the season while allowing two runs and no walks in six innings of work. Lauer also struck out seven batters. Signed to a minor-league deal Dec. 13, 2024, after he was cut by the KBO's Kia Tigers, Lauer has been a strong addition to the Blue Jays' rotation in 2025. The left-hander has a 2.80 earned-run average and a 1.04 walks plus hits per inning pitched in eight starts for the Blue Jays this season. 'One, probably,' said Clement of where Lauer would rank among Toronto's unsung heroes. Story continues below advertisement 'What he's been able to do and come in and just give us a chance to win every game. It's invaluable. So, tip of the cap to him. He's probably been our unsung MVP so far.' Schneider says Lauer's demeanour hasn't changed as his quality starts increased. 'That's one of the things I love about him,' Scheider said of Lauer post-game. 'He's kind of a flat-liner…Not getting too high or too low, and kind of doing what everyone's doing, where you go out and do what we ask of you and you move on to the next time you go out there.' Accustomed to a long relief role as well as a starter this season, Lauer believes the latter is where has earned the right to be. 'I'm just trying to make sure that I stick in the rotation, honestly' Lauer said. 'That's what I want to do, and that's where I think I can help the team best.' With Bowden Francis still on the injured list with a shoulder impingement, the Blue Jays need Lauer in the rotation moving forward. Toronto will attempt to sweep the three-game homestand against the Giants on Sunday before hosting the New York Yankees in a three-game set starting Monday.
