Harvey Fierstein, on eve of Tony honor, looks back on his career

Independent05-06-2025
Last year, Broadway actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein handed director Jack O'Brien the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. This year, it's his turn.
'Following him is not an easy task. In fact, I spoke to him and he said, 'I just want to put my name in there as someone who would love to give you the award.' And I said, 'Well, I'd rather you didn't.' I said, 'I'd rather you wrote my speech,'' Fierstein says.
Fierstein, the four-time Tony winner behind 'Torch Song Trilogy' and 'Kinky Boots,' will get the award Sunday at Radio City Music Hall.
He connected by Zoom from his home in 'a small fictional town in Connecticut' to talk about his career and a Broadway season dominated by George Clooney in 'Good Night, and Good Luck' and Denzel Washington in 'Othello.'
The conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.
AP: Do you know what you're going to say on Tony night?
FIERSTEIN: I never know what I'm going to say. But I have been trying to gather thoughts, which I guess is a good idea. And I watched at least five or six lifetime achievements speeches by others.
AP: Has the honor triggered any personal thoughts?
FIERSTEIN: I did write a line that may or may not end up in my speech, saying that the most humbling thing is to think that my life meant something to the community. It's one thing to be enjoyed, but to have the kind of meaning that they turn around and say, 'We want to give you a lifetime achievement'? That's a very heady idea.
AP: Was a lifetime in the theater inevitable?
FIERSTEIN: No, no, no. I guess there are theatrical types, but art was always inevitable. I was sort of artistic, but I thought I'd maybe be a Disney animator. I don't think I ever believed I was good enough to create the Disney characters, but there were people that took the creation and then did the other drawings. I thought I could do that. Something in the arts. I had my BA in painting from Pratt. That's what I thought was going to do.
AP: You arrived on Broadway just as AIDS was consuming the arts. What was Broadway like then?
FIERSTEIN: There was no time to think about it. We had to go to war immediately. If you remember, Ronald Reagan never said the word 'AIDS' in eight years. There was no attack against the disease; there was only an attack against people. People wouldn't go to restaurants because there were gay waiters. There were people that wouldn't go to Broadway because there were gay people. They might be in the audience with gay people.
AP: You work has always been about compassion. Why didn't you want to burn it all down?
FIERSTEIN: My writing is telling stories that mean something to me. And certainly there's hatred and there's anger in my stories — and truth — as far as I can tell them. But the horrible truth is that no matter how badly we act as human beings, there's still a humanity under it all.
AP: What are your thoughts about the current Broadway season?
FIERSTEIN: Who would have guessed that we'd have a season where the plays were the big thing and the musicals are sort of ignored? Thanks to George and Denzel and these stars that return to Broadway — thankfully return to Broadway — and they've done these plays and it's wonderful. They're bringing an audience that maybe wouldn't go see a musical or a play.
AP: Just get them to experience it, right?
FIERSTEIN: Once you go to the theater, once you get in there and if you have a good time, if it does something, you're going to come back. I don't care why you came in the first place. Come back and see what else we have and open your mind and heart — and wallets.
AP: What about the pipeline of playwrights — are you happy with it?
FIERSTEIN: There are people that are in love with theater, certainly, but there are people that want to make a living. And those people seem to drift to television and movies. I have a nephew married to a wonderful woman who wants to be a writer, but what she wants to write is movies and TV. It wouldn't even interest her to write a play. I don't know why. It seems easier to write television. It seems easier to write a half-hour where you already are given the characters.
AP: Congratulations again. You are beloved in this community and a lifetime achievement award seems appropriate.
FIERSTEIN: I thought it was because they just wanted to give me something else to dust, because I ain't got enough stuff to dust here.

Nicola Peltz and husband Brooklyn Beckham launch Instagram page for their dogs amid feud with his family

Nicola Peltz revealed over the weekend that she and her husband, Brooklyn Beckham, have set up an Instagram page for their dogs. The heiress, 30, told fans on her Insta stories she had a 'very important announcement' to make, adding: 'We made an account for our doggies.' She shared a link to 'peltzbeckhambabies', which featured a snap of one of their pooches, Birdie. The page features images of the couple's other dogs Lamb, Label and Angel, although she referred to them as 'Birdalina', 'Angelina', 'Lambilina', and 'Labellina' in the captions. It so far has just 358 followers, while it only follows Nicola and Brooklyn. It comes months after the couple reportedly set up a new charity dog shelter in Los Angeles. According to The Sun, they launched the Peltz Beckham Foundation, in a bid to rescue and shelter homeless dogs. The couple have been at the center of a feud that pitted Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola against the rest of his family. Last week, it was revealed that Brooklyn and Nicola's Instagram accounts no longer follow his younger brothers Cruz, 20, and Romeo, 22, in the latest family drama. But Brooklyn's friends told that Cruz and Romeo have blocked them on the social media platform. Brooklyn and Nicola are still following his mom Victoria, 51 and dad David, 50. Cruz and Romeo were still following Brooklyn and Nicola earlier this week but appeared to respond after Brooklyn posted a birthday tribute to sister Harper, sharing a family photo which didn't include them - which Nicola reposted. Meanwhile, Nicola doubled down as she declared him 'her everything' on Wednesday. Nicola took to her Instagram Stories with snaps of the pair embracing during their sun-soaked getaway on board her billionaire father's yacht in St Tropez. She also shared a video of herself posing in a black bralette from the trip.

A-list actress looks unrecognisable with short brown hair and boxing gloves in first look at new film - but can you guess who she is?

An A-list actress looked unrecognisable from her usual self in a newly released image for her upcoming film Christy. The star sported a short brown wig in the still which sees her preparing to fight in a boxing ring in the film some are calling 'the female Rocky'. The actress underwent a major body transformation for the role, packing on muscle to portray professional boxer Christy Martin. The film star previously siad of Christy: 'Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I'm honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all.' But can you guess who she is? That's right, it's Sydney Sweeney. The Anyone But You star looks worlds away from her usual self in the upcoming film which is scheduled for release in September. Known as 'The Coal Miner's Daughter' thanks to her father's job, Christy, 56, originally from West Virginia, is credited with putting women's boxing on the map after taking on Deirdre Gogarty in front of a sell-out crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1996. She graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, appeared on talk shows and even made guest appearances on US sitcoms. Yet her life away from the cameras was anything but glamorous. Christy has spoken to the Daily Telegraph about how she spent 20 years suffering abuse at the hands of her husband, James 'Jim' Martin, who was also her trainer. On November 23, 2010, he stabbed Christy stabbed several times and shot her at least once in her torso, leaving her for dead. The attack reportedly occurred after an argument at home - Christy survived the assault. In June 2012 Jim was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and manslaughter. Christy now works as a promoter and has been married to Lisa Holewyne, a fellow former boxer who she used to meet in the ring, since 2017, after coming out as a lesbian in the wake of her marriage ending. In May, Martin revealed she was ecstatic over the actress taking on the challenge of playing her and said she would also be eager to help her train for the role. While speaking about the project, which will be directed by filmmaker David Michôd, she told TMZ that she is thrilled about the casting, especially considering Sweeney's experience in MMA and combat sports. The Emmy-nominated actress said she was ready for the 'physically and emotionally demanding' part in the biopic, which will be put on the market at the Cannes Film Festival. The Hall of Fame boxer gushed over Sydney and also wholly refuted the claims that the Euphoria star 'is not pretty and she can't act' as previously stated by a top Hollywood producer. 'I think she is young, hot, talented,' she said about the leading lady. She added that Sweeney is 'about to make a movie that in 20+ years, fathers will watch with their daughters to make them aware of domestic violence.' Martin also explained the importance of the biopic because it's about more than just her boxing career and journey. 'I want this movie to bring awareness to domestic violence, the challenge of sexuality and overall underdog story,' she said. 'I am a coal miner's daughter from a small town in southern West Virginia that made an impact in a sport that wasn't taken seriously — women's boxing.' And although Martin was not involved in the casting and has not spoken to Sweeney yet, she said she was honored that the Euphoria alum will be taking on the role. She added that she would love to help her with boxing training, which Sweeney has experience in already. In May, Martin revealed she was ecstatic over the actress taking on the challenge of playing her and said she would also be eager to help her train for the role; seen in August 2020 Sweeney previously said that she 'grappled and did kickboxing from 12 to 19 years old.' 'I've been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body,' she told Deadline. Additionally, Martin added that she would love to make a cameo as a nod to her fans.

Bride furious after sister-in-law wears 'white wedding dress' to her big day

A bride was left fuming after her sister-in-law wore a 'wedding dress' to her big day. Taking to the popular Reddit forum Wedding Shaming, an outraged guest shared photos of the woman in question, revealing a floor-length gown with floral detailing. Looking as though she was trying to upstage the bride, the rebellious attendee claimed she was wearing a sage -green dress in accordance with the dress code, which was 'pastel chic'. But the disgruntled bride was not happy, especially as her mother-in-law had already put in a request to wear white, which was denied. The poster wrote: 'The dress code was summer pastel chic, so think Easter colors. 'The girlfriend of the groom's brother wore a sage green (wedding) dress that in no way, shape or form appeared to be sage green, or any other color. 'The veil she's carrying was the flower girl's (her daughter). This was after the mother-in-law had asked the bride if she could wear a white jumpsuit to the wedding, to which the bride obviously said no.' The bride was enraged by the fact that the design of the dress was also bridal - complete with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a romantic, figure-hugging silhouette. To further undermine the claim that the dress was a 'sage' shade, the sister-in-law is pictured wearing green shoes, making the dress look white. The post racked up thousands of comments and sparked a fiery debate, with many shocked on behalf of the bride. One commenter wrote, simply: 'Wow, that's very bridal,' to which another incredulous user responded: 'Yeah this is straight up a wedding dress.' Another wrote: 'I like how her SHOE was sage green. Like, she had a perfect example of what the color is supposed to look like. 'Instead she went about as white as you can go on the color wheel. Wtf. Who thinks this is appropriate?' Some else joked: 'The dress looks like the smell of the color sage from another room.' The majority of commenters could not believe the 'insane' decision to wear 'a full-on wedding gown,' but others sided with the guest. '"Summer Pastel chic" is simply asking for trouble.' 'Honestly yes. So many pastels photograph white or look white under some lighting.' 'I wore a bright-yellow dress with a belt to a friend's wedding. It was so clearly bright yellow, I thought it was a safe choice. Nope! 'A lot of the evening photos were black and white. My dress looked like a wedding dress.' Another comment dished out some seemingly obvious wedding guest advice, writing: 'To be safe, you should never wear any white dress to a wedding that is not yours. 'That being said, not all white dresses are wedding dresses. This is absolutely a wedding dress.'
