Jon Anik suggests 'most worthy' next BMF title challenger after UFC 318

Jon Anik sees one UFC lightweight as the perfect candidate for the next BMF title fight. Max Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) defends his BMF title against the retiring Dustin Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Jorge Masvidal, Nate Diaz, Justin Gaethje, Poirier, and Holloway have all been involved since the introduction of the BMF title, and Anik wants to see Dan Hooker's name in the mix. "Dan Hooker, I think, is the most worthy fighter across every division who has never fought for the BMF title to get an opportunity to do so," Anik told Submission Radio. "A fight between Max Holloway and Dan Hooker, I think makes a lot of sense for the BMF title if Max Holloway were to successfully defend it here against Dustin Poirier." However, if Holloway gets past Poirier, Anik admits he'd rather see him go after the UFC lightweight title over another BMF title defense. "As much as I love the BMF title, and I really do, I have come around in totality, full circle on that thing," Anik continued. "When it was first introduced, I had a little pause, but I think Max Holloway needs to be in the business of chasing undisputed world championships. I think he is probably going to utter as much with me in the fighter meeting next week. "So if Max Holloway successfully defends this belt against Dustin Poirier, I'm not sure it makes a ton of sense depending on the style points and the performance, and the fight itself, for him to make another BMF title defense – even though a Holloway-Hooker BMF title fight makes a lot of sense. I think if Max wins this fight, he's going to be talking about the undisputed lightweight championship, and rightfully so. That belt is gold, and it just means a whole lot more to his legacy, which is already Hall of Fame-worthy. But I think he would love to give it another push."

UFC 318 'Embedded,' No. 1: Gators like marshmallows. Also, hands. So, uh ...

The UFC is back in the bayou for the first time in more than 10 years for UFC 318, its eighth pay-per-view of the calendar year, and the popular "Embedded" fight week video series is here to document what's happening behind the scenes. UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) takes place Saturday at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. In the headliner, Max Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) will try to play spoiler against Louisiana local hero Dustin Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC), who will retire after the fight in front of his home fans. Poirier has two previous wins over Holloway in 2012 and 2019, making it a 13-year rivalry trilogy. The first episode of "Embedded" follows the headliners, as well as other featured fighters, while they get ready for fight week.

Max Holloway downplays Ilia Topuria's recent UFC run: 'They're not looking at the record'

Max Holloway thinks Ilia Topuria caught a slew of UFC legends with repeated perfect timing. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) is on one of the most impressive three-fight stretches in recent memory after scoring knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski, Holloway, and most recently Charles Oliveira to claim the vacant lightweight title at UFC 317. Topuria handed Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) the first knockout loss of his career in their featherweight title fight at UFC 308. However, Holloway explains why Topuria's recent run may be a product of timing. "It's just tough, right?" Holloway told CBS Sports. "Yeah, he beat the names, and you can't deny that. But then when you look, it just sucks with everything that's going on when you look at that Volk fight – Volk coming off what he did (in a knockout loss to Islam Makhachev). That's kind of crazy. But people just look at the name. They're not looking at the record. "They're just like, 'Oh, Alex was the champ,' and then me and then Charles. Charles was on a one-fight win streak. At the end of the day, they're just moments and they're just names. It is one of the greatest names, for sure, that he beat in history. But the man is doing what he's supposed to do. The UFC are lining people up for him, and he's just knocking them down. So, fair play to him." Holloway defends his BMF title in a trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) headliner at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
