The votes are in: This is WA's BEST lobster restaurant

Perth Now18-06-2025
The votes are in, and Lobster Shack Cervantes has officially been crowned WA's Best Lobster Restaurant for 2025, taking top honours in Western Rock Lobster's annual public-voted competition.
In a strong field of over 40 nominated venues across Western Australia, the Lobster Shack was a convincing winner from the almost 900 public votes - a standout result in a competition that has been led in recent years by The Cray Belmont, a consistent favourite with a strong following. While The Cray Belmont and The Cray Currambine placed second and third respectively this year, the Cervantes favourite took a well-earned place at the top of the podium.
For General Manager Nikki Thompson, the win is a reflection of deep roots, community pride, and the shared experience of enjoying a world-class seafood resource.
'Lobster Shack all started from a love of fishing,' Nikki said. 'It's a way of life that's been passed down through our family since the 1960s, back at the old shacks in Green Island/Grey. We wanted to share our passion for lobster and fresh seafood with everyone, somewhere relaxed, welcoming, and family-friendly - where anyone can come and taste some of WA's best seafood, straight from the ocean.'
Since opening in 2010, the Shack has grown from humble beginnings into a must-visit destination, now serving around 65,000 lobsters each year. Its location in Cervantes, one of WA's iconic coastal towns, underscores how vital the lobster fishery is in underpinning local economies and livelihoods.
'The ocean shaped who we are,' Nikki continued. 'We've brought fishing, processing, tourism and hospitality together under one roof to deliver the full pot-to-plate lobster experience. It's about creating jobs, supporting other local businesses, and putting Cervantes on the map.'
The Western Rock Lobster fishery, which is recognised globally as a leader in sustainability and aquatic resource management, plays a vital role in ensuring that this premium product remains accessible and available to the local community, not just export markets. Restaurants like Lobster Shack serve as a direct link between the fishery and the public, sharing the resource in a way that is both engaging and inclusive.
'Lobster Shack isn't just family run - it's community run,' Nikki added. 'We're raising our kids here. We're part of the footy club, the schoolyard. Our team are locals, and our customers often become part of the story. We couldn't do it without them.'
This year's win is a celebration not just of a restaurant, but of the wider community, fishery, and coastline it represents. Lobster Shack's success is a reminder that when you combine passion, place, and purpose—you serve up more than just a great meal. You serve a connection to something bigger.
Four lucky winners from the public who voted in this year's competition will receive a $150 voucher to their nominated restaurant plus a $100 voucher for Back of Boat sales, to be used for this year's peak Christmas period. Winners will be published this Friday on the backofboat.com website and mentioned on the Back of Boat Lobsters Facebook page.

What is charisma (and who's got it)?

In 2013 a hospital in Birmingham, UK, hired workers to help with a Christmas fundraising campaign. Some of the workers were given a charismatic induction speech, in which a professional actor told them they were doing 'something special' and used his arms to make the point. Other workers were given a serviceable but less charismatic speech by the same man. By the end, the workers who heard the charismatic speech had stuffed 17 per cent more envelopes than those who had heard the standard speech. Charisma had motivated them almost as much as the chance of a bonus, according to researchers at the universities of Lausanne, Milan and Zurich. Inspiration had rivalled compensation.

With rates cut tipped for August, insiders explain why this winter could be the time to buy

With another interest rate cut expected in the coming months, possibly as early as August, many experts say winter 2025 is shaping up as a strategic time to buy a home before money becomes cheaper and more buyers flood the market. While winter is typically a quiet time of year for buying and selling property, largely due to fewer listings, which typically peak in spring, Ray White New South Wales head of performance, Alex Pattaro is advising home buyers to beat the spring rush. "Given the RBA's recent announcement to keep rates on hold, I think economists are even more certain of a rate cut in August," Mr Pattaro said. "With more rate cuts on the horizon, my suggestion would be to try and buy something now because those cuts are only going to fuel more buyer confidence. "When money is cheap everyone wants to buy," said Mr Pattaro, which only adds to greater competition and higher prices. Peter Stephens from Nelson Alexander in Carlton North says there are several benefits to buying in winter generally, and this winter, in particular. "While there might be less stock available in winter, it can actually be a good time to move because if you are buying in July or August, it means you can move in well before Christmas," he said. "However, if you're not buying until spring, then you'll often have to wait to that post- Christmas period before you can move in." "In my opinion, the right time to buy a house is when you find one you like, and if you can find one before interest rates drop any further, then even better," he said. "While there is still a little bit of reticence and uncertainty in the market, it's a better time to jump in, rather than when that confidence returns and everyone else is trying to jump in at the same time," he said. Strong demand With the preliminary capital city auction clearance rate reaching 74.7 per cent last week, the highest early clearance rate since the first week of July last year, there are signs buyer confidence has already started to return. Independent property researcher Cameron Kusher said the strong preliminary clearance rates - the highest they've been in over a year - pointed to increased buyer competition and prices. "Recent auction clearance rates highlight there is clearly strong demand for housing currently," he said. "This strong demand is expected to increase as interest rates fall over the coming months, which is expected to result in even more active buyers," he said. "These stronger clearance rates are also indicative of property price increases, which I expect will continue over the coming months," he added. Some experts also believe that vendors who list their properties for sale in winter, outside of peak selling periods, often doing so out of necessity and therefore may be more motivated to sell, increasing your chances of buying a home at a lower price. Others argue that while there is typically more stock on the market in spring, it is not necessarily better quality. Get in before spring Mr Pattaro therefore urges buyers, who are serious about buying, not to hold off for spring. "Now is a very good time to buy. People are back from overseas and school holidays. We're seeing steady price growth and already some more stock reaching the market." "I also think that with any further rate cuts, we might also start to see more investors buying properties again, so that pool of buyers is just going to get bigger as money becomes cheaper," he added. An expansion of the Federal Home Guarantee, which comes into effect from January 2026, and sees all first home buyers eligible to purchase a home with a 5 per cent deposit, without lenders' mortgage insurance, is also likely to drive increased competition in the first home buyer market. "I think that's another factor a lot of people have forgotten about, which will also fuel that part of the market, so my advice would be not to wait," Mr Pattaro said. As well as reaping the benefits of less competition and more subdued price growth this winter, agents say viewing a home in winter enables you to actually see how a home looks and feels during the coldest months of the year, including the aspect of the home and whether it attracts good winter sun. It takes the guesswork out of how your new home will perform during the most challenging time of the year in many states.

Coastal erosion researcher warns against Gold Coast plan for bars on beaches

Beach bars could become a permanent tourist attraction on the Gold Coast from next year, but an environmental researcher warns the city's eroded beaches are in no shape to accommodate them. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he would like the first venue to be set up at Broadbeach in the 2026 summer and packed up in winter. "The ideal beach bar is that I can go down there and enjoy the surf," Cr Tate said. A beach bar was successfully trialled at Broadbeach during the 2021–22 Christmas school holidays. Gold Coast City Council endorsed a three-year extension of the Kurrawa Beach Bar trial, but it was blocked by the Department of Natural Resources in 2022 after complaints from environmental groups. Councillor Tate said a resurrected beach bar would need to be affordable and accessible to the public, unlike some European beach clubs. Bond University coastal erosion researcher Mark Ellis said the venture wouldn't be viable given the city's beaches still bore the scars of damage inflicted during ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. "The issue is you actually need to have a beach to have it on," Mr Ellis said. An estimated 6 million cubic metres of sand, the equivalent of 2,000 Olympic swimming pools, was washed away from beaches across the city. The Gold Coast City Council predicts it could take up to three years to recover from the storm, with more than $30 million already spent on a sand-pumping barge to help speed up the process. Several major events have been relocated or cancelled, including the Pacific Airshow, because of the erosion. Mr Ellis said any planned beach bar would be vulnerable to future storm threats. "I think from an environmental point of view and a climate and modelling point of view, it's not really a good long-term business model because the next storm surge is going to increase," he said. "I think we're going into a La Niña summer and La Niñas are usually profound for bringing in more storms and, when more storms come in, that leads to more erosion. While councils pay to maintain and manage Queensland beaches, the state government owns them. There has been a change of government since the Kurrawa Beach Club was shut down, and Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has publicly supported its revival. But the Gold Coast City Council would have to apply for a trustee lease if it wanted to operate a beach club long term. The Gold Coast Council has been drafting a land-management plan for the Broadbeach foreshore and it carried out community consultation last year. A city spokesperson said the final report would be ready in the coming months. While residents and businesses have previously opposed commercial activities on the beach because of noise and pollution, Cr Tate said the new proposal would have minimal impact on the community. "This is only taking a small part of the beach, not even 50 metres," he said. "We've got 66 kilometres of beach so, if you don't want to go to the beach bar, you've got [plenty of beach] to choose from."
