Canada introduces free support program for internationally educated nurses
Two-stream support: Pre-Arrival and Post-Arrival programs
The PASS program is operated by the CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses and is completely free of charge. It includes two distinct streams, Pre-Arrival for nurses outside Canada and Post-Arrival for those who have already arrived.Nurses overseas can access the program before immigrating if they hold confirmation of permanent residence. Those already in Canada can benefit from the newcomer services offered under the Post-Arrival stream.
Eligibility criteria for participation
To qualify for PASS, applicants must meet two main requirements: Completion of a recognized nursing education program in their home country, with official documentation (degree, diploma, or certificate).
Approval by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residence. Nurses who do not meet these criteria will not be eligible and must explore other support options.
Tailored support and services for IENs
PASS offers a wide range of services designed to help IENs integrate professionally. These include: Communication courses: 84 hours of language training tailored to nursing, covering vocabulary, cross-cultural interaction, documentation, and team communication.
Mentorship: Access to mentors certified by the Canadian Nurses Association with at least three years of work experience.
Webinars and orientation: Sessions explaining the registration process, healthcare system overview, labour trends, and interim job options.
Case management: One-on-one support with introductions to fellow IENs, provincial resources, and settlement guidance.
Guidance on licensure and employment
The PASS program also provides step-by-step support in navigating provincial regulatory requirements, preparing for licensure exams, and securing employment opportunities. Nurses receive assistance with interview preparation and job referrals based on their location and specialization.
How to apply for the PASS program
Interested nurses must fill out an online intake form at the official website. The form requires applicants to create an account and provide: Educational background and clinical specialty
Confirmation of permanent residence (such as COPR, PR visa, or IRCC letters) Once reviewed by a PASS case manager, applicants will receive further instructions for joining the program.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) may begin far earlier than previously thought. Canadian researchers have decoded that the earliest warning signs of the immune system disorder may emerge more than a decade before the first classical neurological symptoms occur. The findings, published in JAMA Network Open, challenge long-held assumptions about when the disease truly begins, offering the most comprehensive picture to date of how patients engage with a range of health care providers in the years leading up to a diagnosis as they search for answers to ill-defined medical challenges. "MS can be difficult to recognise as many of the earliest signs -- like fatigue, headache, pain and mental health concerns -- can be quite general and easily mistaken for other conditions," said senior author Dr. Helen Tremlett, Professor of neurology at the University of British Columbia. "Our findings dramatically shift the timeline for when these early warning signs are thought to begin, potentially opening the door to opportunities for earlier detection and intervention," she added. The study analysed the health records of more than 12,000 people in British Columbia and found that those with MS began using health care services at elevated rates 15 years before their first MS symptoms appeared. The team utilised linked clinical and administrative provincial health data to track physician visits in the 25 years preceding the onset of a patient's MS symptoms, as determined by a neurologist through a detailed medical history and clinical assessments. The findings revealed that when compared to the general population, people with MS had 15 years before symptom onset made several visits to physicians for symptoms like fatigue, pain, dizziness, and mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. Their visits to a psychiatrist increased about 12 years before, while visits to neurologists and ophthalmologists increased for issues like blurry vision or eye pain about eight to nine years before. Further, three to five years before, their visits to emergency medicine and radiology increased, and one year before, visits across multiple specialties peaked, including neurology, emergency medicine, and radiology. These patterns suggest that MS has a long and complex history, said the team. While the researchers caution that the vast majority of people who experience general symptoms will not go on to develop MS, they say recognising and characterizing the MS prodrome could one day help accelerate diagnosis and improve outcomes for patients.

Submit report on all abortion cases in Chittoor district, Collector directs officials
District Collector Sumit Kumar on Friday instructed officials of the Medical and Health Department to immediately verify all abortion cases reported in both government and private hospitals and submit a detailed report to ascertain the causes. He was addressing a meeting on the implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. Emphasising the importance of promoting safe and normal deliveries in government hospitals and primary health centres (PHCs), Mr. Sumit Kumar said that each PHC should aim to conduct at least 50 normal deliveries per month. The Collector warned of disciplinary action against officials found negligent in their duties, especially those ignoring the activities of unqualified practitioners involved in illegal procedures. 'Centres violating medical norms must be shut down immediately,' he said. He also directed ASHA workers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and Anganwadi staff to closely monitor abortion trends and report any suspicious activity confidentially. Stressing the need for monthly inspections, public awareness campaigns, and coordinated departmental efforts, Mr. Sumit Kumar said that strong measures were necessary to curb sex determination practices. He warned that criminal proceedings would be initiated against violators and scanning centres found conducting illegal gender determination tests.
