St. Louis Shock Sweep Home Major League Pickleball Event To Go Top Of The Table

Forbes21-07-2025
St. Louis' dynamic duo of Gabe Tardio (L) and Hayden Patriquin (R) led their team to an undefeated ... More weekend at home.
There's no rest for the weary; just a few days after the exciting Mid-Season tournament in Grand Rapids finished up, a handful of Major League Pickleball (MLP)'s teams headed right to St. Louis for the eighth of ten regular season events. The St. Louis Shock played host to the weekend's festivities, which they held at the Chaifetz Arena on the grounds of St. Louis University. The arena is named for the Chaifetz family, who also happen to be the owners of the hosting St. Louis Shock team, and who personally guaranteed this event to be the 'biggest event of the season." One thing is for sure; the setup of the Arena made this look more like a full-on professional sporting event than the league has ever had before; even at our nicest facilities, most pickleball tournaments are held at Country Clubs or parks where temporary stands are built; in St. Louis the arena look and feel really showed what MLP's founders intended; a home-supported team event where tickets are sold and fans show up just to watch, and not also to play in the event.

Media Pick' Em Contest Update
MLP Super-Fan Matty Pickles (aka Matt Klitch) runs a season-long Media MLP Pick'em Contest on Twitter, where all the pundits in the sport are participating. Here's how we did this week, and where we stand overall.
Summary: I had my worst week predicting matches yet. I missed four matches outright, including both Dallas losses, and took a penalty point as well for missing my 'lock of the week' when Brooklyn shocked Columbus on Sunday afternoon. I maintain a very small lead over Jim Kloss, aka 'the smartest man in pickleball," for the season long competition.
Next up on the Pickleball Calendar? According to my Master Pickleball Schedule, we're right back into Week 9 of MLP, this time heading to Dallas.
The Dallas field is loaded. All three of the league's top teams are there (NJ, STL, Dallas) along with the dangerous Texas Ranchers. Lastly the LA Mad Drops and their new acquisition Johns will be in action for the first time, which should make for a super-interesting weekend.

Also, a great thanks to The Dink's Erik Tice, who maintains a fantastic MLP detailed data breakdown and makes it publicly available at this Google XLS link. Tice's data has proved invaluable this year as MLP does not make match data available at this detailed level at present.

Fabrizio Romano confirms talks in HISTORIC Alexander Isak deal

The British record deal expected to take Alexander Isak from Newcastle to Liverpool is hotting up. Ever since Isak, 25, informed the Magpies that he had no interest in signing a new contract - and instead wished to explore a move away - it has been speculated that a move to Anfield would be imminent. Shop the LFC Store LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Liverpool are prepared to break ANOTHER transfer record to land Isak - top of their list of striker targets. It would likely take a bid of £130m plus in order to land the Swede, who has failed to travel with his club for their Asian preseason tour. It's been claimed that Isak has already signed off on personal terms and Liverpool are in the process of clearing space in the squad - and the budget - through the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern and potentially getting rid of Darwin Nunez too. Liverpool's deal for Isak is 60 percent done And now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that HUGE progress has been made on Isak's record-breaking deal to join Liverpool. The Italian transfer supremo claims that the deal is 60 percent complete - with club-to-club contact now underway. 'For Alexander Isak, in terms of percentage for Liverpool, it's at 60 percent,' he told DAZN Transfer. 'It's quite optimistic, but there is still work to do, 40 percent to go before we can say Isak is going to be a Liverpool player. 'But Liverpool have all the intentions to go strong for this deal. Liverpool already made contact with Newcastle two weeks ago. 'Liverpool are prepared to make a Premier League record-breaking bid for the 25-year-old, but are waiting for Newcastle to give the green light.' Isak REJECTS Saudi deal The Anfield club are clearly frontrunners for Isak - with the player having NO interest in moving to Al-Hilal despite the £600k per week on offer. It's Liverpool or nothing for the Toon's No14 - who looks set to move on to the next stage of his career as Liverpool's centre-forward.

Brentford's £40m Forward 'Only Wants' Newcastle Transfer Despite Competing Bids

Wissa Pushes for Newcastle Move as Brentford Standoff Continues Yoane Wissa's desire to swap west London for the North East is no longer in doubt. The Brentford forward, who struck 19 goals in the Premier League last season, has made it emphatically clear that his heart is set on Newcastle United. Despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, it is Eddie Howe's Magpies that Wissa is determined to join. As per Craig Hope, who reported the update on Tuesday morning, underlining the player's stance and the gravity of the situation at Brentford. 'Wissa wants it to happen. He's not going to play for Brentford. Again, he's communicated that to them. He's told them to find a solution. This is the move he wants, not Villa, not Forest, not Tottenham – Newcastle.' Player Desire Matches Howe's Ethos Eddie Howe has always been a manager who values character and clarity. Transfers at Newcastle are not just about numbers, they are about mentality. As Hope noted, 'Eddie Howe is on the record, as saying that transfers only happen when a player really wants them to and Eddie likes that. He liked that in Anthony Elanga.' It is this same determined mindset that Howe recognises in Wissa. The Congolese forward's refusal to consider offers from elsewhere speaks volumes. He is not looking for an upgrade in wages, he wants to compete in the Champions League. Newcastle, back at Europe's top table, now have the allure to match their ambition. Wissa has told Brentford he will not play for the club again. His frustration is rooted in what he believes was a broken promise. GIVEMESPORT's Ben Jacobs revealed that Wissa may even consider going on strike, feeling the club reneged on a verbal agreement to allow him to leave for £26 million. Newcastle, it is understood, are prepared to go as high as £35 million to secure his signature. Numbers That Back His Rise Described as 'extraordinary,' Wissa's 2024/25 campaign was the finest of his career. With 19 goals in 35 appearances, he became the focal point of Brentford's attack. His sharp movement, intelligent pressing and instinctive finishing make him ideal for Howe's high-intensity system. Photo IMAGO This is not a luxury signing. With Alexander Isak requesting a move away from St James' Park, Wissa could quickly shift from exciting option to central figure. His adaptability across the front line adds value, especially with European football stretching squad depth to its limits. Brentford Begin to Look Elsewhere Brentford, for their part, are now scouting potential replacements. There is a growing sense that they may have little choice but to cash in. Newcastle's willingness to exceed the originally suggested £26 million valuation changes the conversation. If Brentford can reshape their attack with those funds, Wissa's exit may yet serve both sides. But the saga is not over. With negotiations ongoing, the situation could hinge on how long Brentford are willing to hold firm. Newcastle, emboldened by the player's loyalty and firm stance, may wait it out. But the sooner Wissa is integrated into Howe's plans, the better. Timing matters in pre-season, especially when a player is so eager to make an impression. Our View – EPL Index Analysis For Newcastle fans, this deal feels like more than just a transfer. It is about momentum, identity, and belief in a project. Wissa's desire to come here, while turning down other clubs, shows that players are starting to see something serious taking shape at St James' Park. The fact that he scored 19 goals in a mid-table side is impressive, but even more so is how determined he is to be part of what we are building. Wissa plays with energy, aggression, and hunger, all traits that suit our team perfectly. Yes, £35 million is a sizeable fee, but in today's market, for a forward in his prime, it feels like a justifiable investment. If Isak does leave, we need someone who will carry the weight and lead the line. Wissa can do that. But even if Isak stays, having both gives us genuine threat and depth up front. If this deal goes through, it will feel like a statement that Newcastle are not only back in Europe but are staying there. A player like Wissa choosing us over others is exactly the kind of shift we have waited years to see.

Frimpong Impresses in Liverpool Pre-Season as Mac Allister Offers Praise

Frimpong's Arrival Adds New Energy as Liverpool Prepare for Title Defence Liverpool's preparations for their Premier League title defence are entering their final stages in Asia, with Arne Slot overseeing what has been a purposeful and strategic pre-season. The Reds are less than a month away from beginning the new campaign, and while physical sharpness remains the focus, so too does bedding in a number of new arrivals. Among those catching the eye is Jeremie Frimpong, the Dutch full-back brought in to strengthen a position once dominated by Trent Alexander-Arnold. His arrival was always going to bring scrutiny, but early signs suggest Frimpong is already making a quiet but important impact. Alexis Mac Allister, returning to training after injury, has taken particular note of the energy the 23-year-old is injecting into the squad. Mac Allister Praises New Arrivals Speaking to the Argentine midfielder shared his impressions of the new signings, highlighting Frimpong's positivity. 'It's amazing. I think we've made great additions to the team, they are showing in every single training [session] how good they are,' Mac Allister said. He continued: 'We are really happy with that. Now it's about knowing the characteristics of the new players, getting used to playing together. I'm pretty sure that this will be a very good season for us. 'They brought new energy, good energy, especially Jeremie! They are always smiling, you can see how happy they are to be here and hopefully they can help us to win more titles.' Photo IMAGO That energy has been noticed beyond the training ground too. While Frimpong has yet to start a match during the tour, his cameo against Milan, where he played in a more advanced right-wing role, earned plaudits from supporters eager to see what he can offer. Role Rotation at Right-Back For all the anticipation surrounding Frimpong's arrival, Slot's team selections suggest the battle for the right-back berth is very much ongoing. Conor Bradley has been given the nod more regularly during pre-season, a reminder that the Northern Irishman remains a key part of Slot's tactical plans. Frimpong may have been signed with Alexander-Arnold's succession in mind, but this transition will not be automatic. Bradley, despite his own struggles with injury, has the trust of the manager. Frimpong, then, is being integrated gradually, perhaps with an eye on rotation rather than outright replacement in the early stages. This isn't a demotion of Frimpong's abilities but rather a reflection of Slot's pragmatism. His pre-season usage as a winger offers a glimpse into how Liverpool might adapt their shape depending on the opposition. That kind of flexibility is a hallmark of a team prepared to defend its title intelligently. Photo: IMAGO Frimpong's Attributes Offer Tactical Variety What Frimpong provides is pace, intensity and a high press from wide areas, all of which fit seamlessly into Slot's blueprint. He thrives in open spaces, stretches opposition lines and is unafraid to overlap or cut inside. He is a defender by trade, but his attacking instincts mirror those of a winger, offering Liverpool a different dynamic from deep. Mac Allister's comments also reinforce the impact Frimpong has made off the pitch. Good energy, positivity and connection with team-mates are invaluable during the long months of a title race. In a dressing room that has experienced both triumph and transition over the last 18 months, fresh voices like Frimpong's help keep spirits sharp and focused. Liverpool are no longer chasing titles, they are defending one. And in that pursuit, every addition, every training session, and every positive influence counts. If Frimpong continues on this trajectory, he will play a vital role in keeping Liverpool on top.
