Grand National field begins to take shape as six horses are removed
Four horses – L'Homme Presse, Capodanno, Velvet Elvis, and Minella Drama – were previously guaranteed a run but have been ruled out for different issues, with the former having suffered a training injury in February.
Fontaine Collonges and Quick Wave are the other two horses who were ruled out, with neither falling within the 34-horse cut line.
These six join notable absentees including 2025 Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin, who was ruled out last month, and Mr Incredible, who was barred from running by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).
As a result, Monbeg Genius, Vanillier, Horantzau D'Airy, Hyland and Celebre D'Allen are all now guaranteed a run, with Three Card Brag and Twig also making the cut for now.
If no other horses are removed, the last spot in the famous race should go to Duffle Coat, though Shakem Up'Arry and Roi Mage are also in contention.
The final field will be decided on Thursday morning, with four reserves also nominated.
The event, which is one of the most prestigious on the UK horse racing calendar, will take place at Aintree racecourse at 4pm on Saturday 5 April, with other prestigious races including the Aintree Hurdle, which will be contested by both Lossiemouth and Constitution Hill this year.
2024 winner I Am Maximus is among the favourites ahead of the National, with Iroko and Intense Raffles also prominent in the betting alongside Stumptown, who won the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham earlier last month.

Nigel Farage throws support behind campaign to stop introduction of racing tax
The Reform leader said he would fight against the tax proposal during an interview at Goodwood where he was a guest of leading racehorse owners Dr Jim and Fitri Hay Nigel Farage has thrown his support behind racing's campaign to stop the government carrying out a tax raid which the industry claims will threaten the sport's future. The Treasury last month completed a public consultation over plans to harmonise remote gambling duties which would treat horse racing on the same level as other forms of gambling. The British Horseracing Authority has launched a petition and urged participants and punters to lobby their MPs to argue that racing should be taxed at a lower rate. The BHA has produced economic analysis which has estimated that racing could lose at least £66 million if the tax is set on a par with online games of chance, putting tens of thousands of jobs at risk. Reform leader Farage was at Goodwood on Friday where he was attending as a guest of leading racehorse owners Dr Jim and Fitri Hay. Last year former Prime Minister Liz Truss was among their entourage. Speaking to ITV Racing, Farage said: 'I love racing, be it Flat, be it jumps. It's a really important part of what we do as a country, and there are some concerns around it. 'I think there is an ignorance here. There is an an assumption from members of Parliament that all gambling is bad, all gambling leads to ruin, and look, some of those machines where you can go and lose your entire money in an afternoon are pretty addictive. 'I do think horse racing is different. You are making an individual decision each time to have a bet. There are checks and safeguards in place.' Asked if he thought that was the majority view in government, he replied: 'No. I think I'm in a minority. 'It's worrying for the racing industry because what they are proposing to put in is going to do the most enormous amount of damage. 'And I see this again and again and again, people with little understanding of what they are legislating on making decisions for everybody else. I will certainly be fighting. Thurles to close with immediate effect
The late Pierce Molony took over the running of Thurles from his father Doctor Paddy Molony in 1974, but Pierce's widow Riona released a statement confirming the family's decision to retire from racing. She said: 'It has been an honour and a privilege for our family to have run Thurles Racecourse, and I am officially announcing our retirement today. 'We are very proud of the immense contribution our family has made to racing and we are most grateful to our extended racecourse family, our dedicated staff, generous sponsors, loyal patrons and the wider racing community for all your support. 'Horse racing is part of the fabric of our family, and we have been very fortunate to have made so many great friends within the industry over the years. My family and I look forward to going racing with you again, as spectators.' Although Thurles is fully licenced to race until December 31 and is scheduled to stage 11 fixtures in the 2025/26 Irish racing calendar, the Molony family have no plans to continue racing. Riona Molony added: 'Since my beloved husband Pierce passed away in 2015, with the help of our four daughters Patricia, Helen, Ann Marie and Kate and our wonderful staff, we've managed to keep the show on the road and I know he would be very proud of us for that. 'The girls all have their own families, careers and lives to live. Ever increasing industry demands and the cost of doing business has also been a major factor. 'We're going to enjoy this time together and relax now the decision is made and the news is out before we consider our options.' Thurles, which is Ireland's only privately owned racecourse, stages a number of high-profile races including the Horse and Jockey Hotel Chase, formerly known as the Kinloch Brae. The Grade Two contest has an illustrious roll of honour, having been won by the likes of Native Upmanship, Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Newmill, Cheltenham Gold Cup heroes Don Cossack and Sizing John and the top-class Allaho.

Goodwood tips: Newsboy's picks and 1-2-3 for every race on Friday on ITV
The feature King George Stakes, Thoroughbred Stakes and Golden Mile are all covered in Newsboy's unmissable column on day four of Glorious Goodwood Glorious Goodwood rolls into day four as the action in one of the most picturesque racing settings in the world continues at the Sussex track. The Qatar Goodwood Festival has maintained its tradition as one of the highlights of the summer with the crowds come out to the Chichester venue in the hope of fine racing and fine weather. Day four features the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes, Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes and Coral Golden Mile, with Australian sprinter, a winner at Royal Ascot last year, among the notable participants. Newsboy, aka David Yates, will be providing daily and detailed guides on every race. 1.20 Coral Goodwood Handicap SHERADANN shapes as if this marathon test will show him in his best light. This race's roll of honour includes some of the best Flat and National Hunt trainers, and Ian Williams is a shrewd operator in both spheres. Sheradann, a three-time winner in France for Francis Graffard and the late Aga Khan, has yet to hit the target in 10 starts since making his debut for the Alvechurch trainer last summer. But the five-year-old grey's turn may not be far away. Sheradann rounded off last year with two podium efforts behind the smart stayer Duke Of Oxford at Kempton Park. My selection was strong at the end of the two-mile distance on both occasions and it was a similar story when Sheradann took third to Aggagio over the same trip here two starts ago. And there was another bronze medal and another powerful finish to take away from the Northumberland Plate, another two-mile handicap, last time out. The extra yardage here would stretch most horses' stamina to snapping point, but it may be just what Sheradann needs, and a British Horseracing Authority mark of 87 is reasonable. Mordor, Kyle Of Lochalsh and Vino Victrix are all capable of showing to the fore in a fascinating opener. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 SHERADANN, 2 KYLE OF LOCHALSH, 3 VINO VICTRIX 1.55 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes DIEGO VENTURA looks best placed to cope with the rain-softened terrain - and that will count for a lot. The Mehmas colt's debut success at Naas in July of last year - he was trained by Gavin Cromwell at the time - caught the eye of Wathnan racing who purchased Diego Ventura and sent him to Hamad Al Jehani in Newmarket. Soft ground was not an issue when he followed up in a novice stakes at Ascot in September, and the mud was flying for second placings in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket 20 days later and a Listed contest at Doncaster on his final outing of 2024. Diego Ventura was no match for Cosmic Year when fourth in the Listed King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket in May but he was back in business in the same grade at Longchamp next time. A running-on third in the Listed Surrey Stakes on the Oaks undercard was another good effort and Diego Ventura ran to a similar level with a blinkered fourth - the headgear is left off today - at Chantilly last time out. These conditions will be a help rather than a hindrance and James Doyle's partner should not be juice underfoot potentially a drawback for Cosmic Year, King Of Cities and Seagulls Eleven are the choices to chase my selection home. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 DIEGO VENTURA, 2 KING OF CITIES, 3 SEAGULLS ELEVEN 2.30 Coral Golden Mile GREAT CHIEFTAIN continues to follow an upward curve and is fancied to prove up to the toughest task of his career to date. The son of Gleneagles missed the target on his first six outings but enjoyed a red-letter day at Newbury in July of last year. That win was achieved from a British Horseracing Authority rating of 69 and Great Chieftain, then trained in tandem by Paul and Oliver Cole, hasn't looked back since. After a second at Windsor next time, Great Chieftain registered a 20-1 score in the mile handicap for three-year-olds at this fixture 12 months ago and defied a 6lb rise at Newmarket in August on what proved to be his final race of last season. Great Chieftain blew out at Wolverhampton and Newbury on his first two starts of the current campaign, but he was back in business at Newmarket on 2,000 Guineas day. And he made it five victories from his last eight starts at Haydock Park at the end of May, overcoming trouble to hold Dashing Darcey by three-quarters of a length. Now on a rating of 93 and saddled by Oliver Cole, who has taken the licence at Whatcombe outright, Great Chieftain must go well once more. Threats in the Golden Mile lurk at every turn, with Two Tempting, Skukuza and Arisaig at the top of a long shortlist. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 GREAT CHIEFTAIN, 2 TWO TEMPTING, 3 SKUKUZA 3.05 King George Qatar Stakes SHE'S QUALITY has speed to burn - so Goodwood's downhill five furlongs could be just what she needs. Trained in Co Meath by Jack Davison, Acclamation's daughter tackled six furlongs when gaining her first victory in a maiden for fillies at Newbury in August 2023, but has since made her name as a blink-and-you'll-miss-her speedball. She's Quality gained three victories over the minimum trip as a three-year-old in 2024, adding to a success in a Down Royal handicap in June with a conditions-event score at Tipperary the following month and responding to first-time blinkers to for a three-length supremacy in the Listed Abergwaun Stakes at the latter venue in September. Davison has brought She's Quality over to England for her three outings of 2025 and, while she has met with defeat on each occasion, she has left the strong impression a Group prize is hers for the taking when the planets align. My selection made her return to the fray with a second to Rumstar in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket in May and again filled the runner-up berth when beaten half a length by Mgheera in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock Park three weeks later. She's Quality didn't quite last home at Sandown Park when a three-quarter-length second to Rumstar in Sandown Park's Group 3 Coral Charge last time but Jame's Ryan's mount is taken to last home at this speed-favouriting track. Asfoora, narrowly denied 12 months ago, should be in the shake-up, while Big Mojo, Time For Sandals and Khaadem also appeal. NEWSBOY'S 1-2-3: 1 SHE'S QUALITY, 2 ASFOORA, 3 KHAADEM 3.45 Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes GODWINSON is now putting it together and receives the vote to rack up a hat-trick. The William Haggas-trained son of Saxon Warrior was a touch hit and miss as a four-year-old last season but is two from two in 2025 - with the promise of better to come. At 15-2 shot for the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster in March, my selection still had more in front than behind with two furlongs of the mile remaining, but flew home to edge the photo finish by a nose. Put up 5lb in the handicap as a result, Godwinson followed up, again over a mile, at Newcastle at the end of June, leading inside the final furlong under Tom Marquand to beat Superposition by three-quarters of a length. His finishing effort over eight furlongs suggests a ninth should not be a problem and, while he still has a few pounds to find with some in this conditions contest, Godwinson hasn't reached the bottom of the barrel. Liberty Lane, Carrytheone and Haunted Dream can fight it out for the podium placings. Find out more here. 4.20 Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap SHAMAN CHAMPION is of definite interest as he steps into handicap company for the first was some market interest when Richard Hughes gave the youngster his debut in a five-furlong maiden at Leicester in May - Shaman's son went off at 4-1 in a field of 13. My selection could hardly have got his career off to a better start, careering away for a four-length win from Calafiori to book his place in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. By contrast, he raced in rear when tackling six furlongs for the first time in a novice stakes at Newbury 22 days ago and his fifth to Penhallam, doing best of the horses given hold-up rides, needs upgrading. There is definitely further progress in store on the fourth outing of Shaman Champion's life and an opening British Horseracing Authority mark of 83 looks within range. Of his opponents, Old Is Gold, Rising Power and Try Storm Cat are just three juveniles whose best days lie ahead of them. 4.55 Coral Pipped At The Post Winners Handicap PUSH THE LIMIT is the choice to give his 12 rivals weight and a beating. A one-mile novice stakes at Kempton Park last October was the Ralph Beckett trainee's career starting point and Hector Crouch's mount promised much for the future with a length-and-three-quarter beating of The King's Falcon. Tackling an additional two furlongs in a similar event at Newmarket's Craven meeting in April, Le Havre's son went under by a neck to Spanish Voice, and he again filled the runner-up berth at Carlisle the following month when The King's Falcon gained his revenge with a two-and-a-half-length margin. That race was run over nine furlongs and both the top weight's style of running and his bloodline suggest that he will thrive for an additional quarter mile as he seeks to improve past an opening British Horseracing Authority mark of 91. In a field three-year-olds still in possession of an 'up' side, Sea Of Kings, Yabher and Ride The Thunder are all names worth throwing into the melting pot.
