The Kansas City Royals and pitcher Seth Lugo agree to 2-year extension, AP source says
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal, which presumably takes one of the most talked-about names on the trade market off the table ahead of this week's deadline, had not been officially announced.
The 35-year-old Lugo made his first All-Star Game and won his first Gold Glove last season, when he went 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA in the first year of a two-year, $30 million deal that included a player option for next season. Lugo has followed that up with an even better start to this season, going 7-5 with a 2.95 ERA through 19 outings for Kansas City.
Rumors surfaced of several contenders interested in trading for Lugo ahead of Thursday's deadline, and the fact that the Royals have been hanging on the fringe of contention themselves left many wondering whether they would be buyers or sellers.
It appears that they are going to make a push for a second consecutive playoff appearance.
The Royals acquired outfielder Randal Grichuk from the Diamondbacks for reliever Andrew Hoffmann late Saturday, shoring up a weakness in the lineup by adding a right-handed bat. Now, they have indicated that Lugo remains big a part of their future with his extension — an especially timely one given it came the same day that All-Star pitcher Kris Bubic went on the injured list.
Kansas City also is missing starters Cole Ragans and Michael Lorenzen due to injuries. Both are expected back at some point in August, and the Royals are hopeful that their return to the rotation will propel them down the stretch run.
After beating the Guardians on Sunday, the Royals were four games back of the final American League wild-card spot.

The Washington Commanders might have to prepare for life without star wide receiver Terry McLaurin if they aren't willing to give him a major contract extension. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter told The Pat McAfee Show on Monday that he thinks McLaurin wants "considerably more" than what Pittsburgh Steelers receiver DK Metcalf recently earned on his new contract. Schefter added that the Commanders aren't willing to pay McLaurin that much money right now. "They love and value Terry McLaurin, but they love and value him at a different price," Schefter reported during his segment. McLaurin is in the midst of a hold-in with the franchise, as he's around the team facilities but presumably not practicing until he gets a new contract. The team recently put McLaurin on the PUP list with an ankle injury, and he was seen giving autographs to fans on Sunday. McLaurin told reporters on Monday he's taking his contract situation "day by day," but Schefter's reporting does put into question if these two sides will be able to come together on a mutually beneficial deal any time soon. Per Over the Cap, McLaurin making more than Metcalf (about $33 million annually) would put him within the top-four paid receivers in the league at present, with only Bengals wideout Ja'Marr Chase ($40.25 million), Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson ($35 million) and Cowboy wideout CeeDee Lamb ($34 million) making more annually on their deals. He had a career-high 13 touchdowns last year in the regular season and added three more in the postseason. He is instrumental to his team's overall success. The numbers game most likely just comes down to how much McLaurin views his value to the franchise and how much the franchise views his value in comparison to other star receivers in the league. Giving him Lamb's deal feels incredibly reasonable given how vital McLaurin is to the passing game, but would he want more? Is Washington not willing to even eclipse what Metcalf earned from Pittsburgh in the offseason? Just how far off are these two sides? Questions abound for McLaurin and the Commanders, as a pivotal season ahead currently can't rely on the offense's best non-quarterback playmaker joining the lineup. Jameson Williams' asking price in Lions extension potentially revealed
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is eligible for a contract extension, and his asking price for a new deal may have just been revealed. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and The Insiders, the Denver Broncos are signing Pro Bowl wide receiver Courtland Sutton to a four-year extension worth $92 million. Heading into 2025, Williams is expected to take another step forward and post a productive season. If he can build off a promising 2024 campaign, the Alabama product should be in line for a lucrative extension next offseason worth similarly or even more than what Sutton just got from the Broncos. Williams is also much younger than Sutton, which should increase the value of his deal.
