Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has spoken of the importance of Bruno Fernandes to the team.
The Spaniard, who was recently awarded an MBE, played 285 times for United, scoring 51 goals.
He was speaking to The Times about a new art exhibition in Manchester he is involved in named, 'Football City, Art United' where visitors can 'experience collaborations between 11 artists and 11 footballers.'

The exhibition is created to encourage visitors to consider the pressure of fame by 'picking out at random a member of the public and placing them under a constant spotlight as they explore the art space.'
Mata also touched on his time at United in the interview and he lavished praise on playing regularly at a stadium like Old Trafford.
He stated, 'for me, the tunnel at Old Trafford has always been really special. I mean, it's that beautiful stadium, the Theatre of Dreams, and you're there every two weeks walking through that tunnel and getting to a pitch where you know there's going to be 75,000 people.'
The popular Spaniard also spoke on United's present and despite the poor results of last season, he remains optimistic over his old side's future.

Commenting on the manager Ruben Amorim he claimed, 'I like the coach [Ruben Amorim], a young coach with a lot of positivity and energy, and hopefully he can turn things around.'
He also spoke about Ineos' partial takeover of United and claimed despite the challenges of trying to 'create financial sustainability' the team 'can really grow on the pitch. That's what I would love. I love the club.'
Mata then turned his attention to one of his former teammates and close friends, Bruno Fernandes.
The Portuguese international was on the cusp of leaving the club earlier in the summer but decided to turn down a lucrative offer from Al Hilal for his services.

Commenting on Fernandes he opined, 'I speak a lot with Bruno [Fernandes], who is a very enthusiastic player. And when things are not going well, he suffers a lot. So, I hope that this year is the year where things can be a bit more stable on the pitch and they can really build and bring United where I believe they should be, which is fighting for the biggest trophies there are.'
The Western Sydney Wanderers player also commented on speculation that Fernandes does not fit directly into Amorim's preferred system.
He elaborated, 'I think if Bruno doesn't fit into any system, you should create a system in which he can fit because he is just so good as a player and as a person, as a leader. I think he is instrumental for Man United.'

'Here we go': Man United miss out on sensational talent to European giants

Manchester United have missed out on one of their midfield targets, as they continue to prioritise attacking reinforcements. United are determined to hand Ruben Amorim a new striker to complete his revamped attack. Accordingly, the club's hierarchy have tabled a bid worth €85 million for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko. However, they face competition from Newcastle United, who have submitted a higher offer for the Slovenian. The two clubs are now waiting for Sesko to make a final decision on his future. The arrival of the Leipzig star should greatly improve United's frontline. However, United also intend to address their midfield. After United secured the services of Bryan Mbeumo, it was reported that the Red Devils want to sign a defensive minded midfielder for Amorim. AC Milan leave Man United behind in the race for Jashari Early in the summer, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United held talks with the representatives of Club Brugge talent Ardon Jashari. The 23-year-old midfielder has drawn comparisons to Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets, owing to his technical prowess. However, AC Milan have now struck a deal with the Belgian outfit for the United target. According to Fabrizio Romano, Brugge have accepted Milan's latest bid believed to be in the region of €39 million. Jashari is now set to undergo medical tests, having already agreed to move to San Siro. Man United to make offer for Sara United, meanwhile, have set their sights on Galatasaray midfielder Gabriel Sara, according to reports in Turkey. Sara, who left Norwich City in 2024, has proven to be a great asset for Gala in the middle of the park. Still, he could swiftly return to England amid interest from the Premier League giants. It is understood that United are considering making a bid for Sara 'in the coming days.' For the time being, it seems they are focused on Sesko. Paul Joyce: Liverpool target €40m Parma star to fix defensive shortage

Liverpool Assessing Move for Parma's Giovanni Leoni as Defensive Options Dwindle Defensive reinforcements become priority With the Premier League season rapidly approaching, Liverpool's need for defensive reinforcements is no longer a hypothetical concern, but a growing necessity. Arne Slot is facing an increasingly fragile situation in central defence. According to Paul Joyce in The Times, the club have now turned their attention to Parma's Giovanni Leoni, an 18-year-old centre-back whose potential has made him one of the most talked-about defensive prospects in Italy. Photo IMAGO Leoni, dubbed the 'new Fabio Cannavaro' by sections of the Italian media, is seen as a long-term solution but may also be thrust into a more immediate role given Liverpool's thin resources at the back. Squad depth under strain Virgil van Dijk, still the figurehead of Liverpool's defence, is now 34. Behind him, options are increasingly limited. Joe Gomez has already picked up an Achilles concern during pre-season, while Ibrahima Konaté is now in the final 12 months of his contract. Photo: IMAGO The sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million, while profitable, has further depleted the pool. It leaves Slot with few dependable options and no clear successor to Van Dijk established. Photo IMAGO The interest in Leoni is a clear indication that the club are looking beyond short-term cover. Talent recognised, but deal complex Standing at 6'5' and already capped at Italy U19 level, Leoni has made just 17 Serie A appearances for Parma, yet his stock continues to rise. Having only joined Parma from Sampdoria in a €4.8 million deal last summer, his progress has been described as 'meteoric'. His development from Padova's youth setup to Italy's top tier in under two years reflects the rapid trajectory Liverpool's scouting department have been monitoring. Photo IMAGO However, the financials and timing may be problematic. Parma reportedly want €40 million to part ways with Leoni, and Italian sources claim the player prefers to remain in Serie A, with Inter Milan currently favourites. There is also a belief on the player's side that another year at Parma could boost his international chances ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis Liverpool fans are growing increasingly restless about the lack of clarity in central defence. The situation has been evolving all summer, but now it feels like it's finally reached a crunch point. The interest in Giovanni Leoni is exciting. An 18-year-old, 6'5' ball-playing centre-back, already labelled the 'new Cannavaro', ticks a lot of boxes. Add to that the fact he considers Virgil van Dijk his idol, and it's easy to understand why supporters are intrigued. But intrigue only gets you so far. This is not the time for long-term thinking alone. Liverpool's defensive department is paper-thin. With Gomez already flagged for fitness and Konaté's contract running down, there is no room for hesitation. If Leoni is ready, and if he's open to moving, the club should move quickly. Otherwise, fans will want to see a more experienced alternative brought in before the window shuts. For now, Leoni represents promise, but Liverpool need presence.

Jorge Costa, Champions League winning captain of Porto, dies at 53

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Jorge Costa, who captained Porto to the 2004 Champions League title, died Tuesday of cardiac arrest, the club said. He was 53. Costa, a central defender who made 50 international appearances for Portugal, was Porto's director of football at the time of his death. The club's said in its announcement that Costa embodied Porto's values: 'dedication, leadership, passion, and an unwavering spirit of conquest.' Portuguese media reported that Costa sustained cardiac arrest at the club's training center and was transported to São João Hospital. Costa's finest achievement in his playing career was as captain of Jose Mourinho's Porto team that was a surprise winner of the Champions League in 2004. A year earlier, he lifted the second-tier UEFA Cup. Costa also helped Porto win eight Portuguese league titles. He spent a short period on loan at English team Charlton in the 2001-02 season. 'To hear of a life taken at 53 is never nice to hear, but he's a former teammate who had such a great standing in the game and captained a Champions League winning side,' said Steve Brown, chair of Charlton's ex-players' association. 'He was loved at Charlton, a man mountain of a player and a great guy too.' ___
