Lionel Messi to return at Camp Nou? Here's what Barcelona's plans for Inter Miami star who left La Liga club in 2021

Minta day ago
Barcelona are planning to bring club legend Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou back for a tribute during the renovated stadium's grand reopening in the summer of 2026. Messi, who graduated from La Masia Academy and went on to become one of Barcelona's all-time greats, left the La Liga giants in 2021 for Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain.
Based on a Mundo Deportivo report, grand reopening of Camp Nou is expected once the roof installation is completed. It also stated that Barcelona officials are viewing Messi as a centre of occasion, with the tribute to be seen as a grand farewell for the Argentinean. Messi left Barcelona with 35 trophies and 672 goals in 778 matches.
If the Messi plan goes well, the special occasion will see both Lamine Yamal and Messi in the same frame. Lamal, who plays for Barcelona and Spain, is being touted as the next big thing in football.
The Messi event at Camp Nou depends on how fast the renovation work is going on. If the roof installation is completed as planned in the summer of 2026, the Messi event will take place during the 2026-27 La Liga season. In case the renovation work is delayed, the event will be rescheduled.

More from Football FIFA president Gianni Infantino, for one, was delighted at how things panned out in the first edition of the global tournament to feature 32 teams. 'The golden age of club football has started. We can definitely say this FIFA Club World Cup has been a huge success. We heard that financially it would not work, that nobody is interested, but I can say we generated almost 2.1 billion dollars in revenues, for 63 matches,' Infantino had said on the eve of the final. 'That makes an average of $33 million per match – no other club competition in the world comes close. It is already the most successful club competition in the world,' he added. Was the 32-team FIFA Club World Cup a success? The tournament that previously featured the six continental champions along with one club representing the host nation and took place during winter has been met with mixed reception, with the likes of former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp describing it as the 'worst idea ever implemented in football'. As for the attendance, the average turnout at the Club World Cup stood at 38,369, which is lower than the FIFA World Cups that have taken place since the 1962 edition in Chile. There were questions over how well the tournament would be received in the US, which hosted the 2025 entirely by itself and will co-host next year's FIFA World Cup along with Mexico and Canada. With the football calendar getting increasingly overcrowded with each passing year, the 32-team Club World Cup has added to concerns on player workload. 'I try not to think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious,' Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was quoted by The Guardian as saying ahead of his team's last-16 match against Al-Hilal on 30 June. 'Maybe in November, December, January, ask me. I may say 'So listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us',' he added. The next edition of the Club World Cup takes place in 2029, with the tournament becoming a quadrennial affair. FIFA, meanwhile, will be turning its attention to the World Cup that takes place in North America next year, with the United States slated to host the lion's share of matches. Chelsea's Cole Palmer surprised to share FIFA Club World Cup podium with Donald Trump; says 'I was bit confused'

Chelsea's Cole Palmer powered his team to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 title against Paris Saint-Germain in a one-sided final clash. He secured the Golden Ball for his exceptional performance by scoring the initial two goals for the Blues. However, an unexpected moment stole the spotlight when US President Donald Trump joined the podium, adding a surprising twist to the celebration. Chelsea dominated Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) with a 3-0 win in the FIFA Club World Cup final. At just 23, Palmer was the star, scoring twice in the 22nd and 30th minutes with precise left-footed strikes from inside the penalty area. His perfectly timed through pass in the 43rd minute enabled new signing Joao Pedro to score the third goal outclassing PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and sealing the triumph. As Chelsea captain Reece James raised the trophy, Palmer was stunned to see Donald Trump, standing between him and Sanchez on the award stand. FIFA President Gianni Infantino handed Trump a medal, heightening the surprise. 'I knew he was going to be here, but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused,' Palmer admitted. Trump's comment, 'Soccer unites the world,' added a striking dimension to the ceremony. Enzo Maresca's game plan was advantageous for Chelsea as he urged the players to attack from the opening whistle. 'I think we won the game in the first 10 minutes,' Maresca said, highlighting Chelsea's early control. 'These are the games where we expect Cole to appear because they are big games, big moments,' Maresca noted. Palmer's brilliance wasn't limited to the final. He scored in Chelsea's 2-1 quarterfinal win over Palmeiras and delivered two assists in their 4-1 Europa Conference League victory against Real Betis on May 28, earning player of the match honours in both finals. Off the field, Cole Palmer's profile is getting highlighted. His image graced Times Square and Madison Square Garden in a Nike campaign alongside stars like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Vinicius Junior. 'I have seen the billboards… It's a nice feeling to be obviously alongside the type of players,' Palmer said. His 18th goal of the season came in the final, underscoring his knack for shining in high-stakes moments. 'It's a great feeling. Even better because obviously everyone doubted us before the game,' he said, crediting Maresca's tactical mastery.

Ter Stegen's Demotion At Barcelona Raises Doubts For Germany's World Cup Squad

Last Updated: Marc-Andre ter Stegen's demotion at Barcelona under Hansi Flick raises concerns about his status in Germany's national team for the 2026 World Cup. Marc-Andre ter Stegen's reported demotion at Barcelona has sparked fresh concerns about his status in Germany's national team just a year before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Spanish and German media, including Sport, Mundo Deportivo, and Kicker, report that new Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has informed the 33-year-old goalkeeper that he will be the third choice next season, behind new signing Joan Garcia and 35-year-old Wojciech Szczesny. Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has publicly sought clarification on Ter Stegen's future, emphasizing that regular playing time is essential for selection. 'Rhythm and consistent match practice are inevitable for anyone wanting to be part of the World Cup squad," Nagelsmann stated. Garcia, 24, joined Barcelona from Espanyol for a reported 25 million euros on a contract running through 2031, while Szczesny has agreed to a two-year extension. Ter Stegen, despite being under contract until 2028, now faces a threat to his role with Germany, according to Xinhua. Kicker described Barcelona's approach as a clear signal that the club wants to move on from Ter Stegen, despite his decade of service, 422 appearances, and 19 trophies. Adding to the complexities, the goalkeeper recently separated from his wife but remains committed to staying in Barcelona for personal reasons, as his children live there. Former Germany international and ex-Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler criticised Barcelona's treatment of Ter Stegen as disrespectful, considering his years of elite performances. Adler advised him to seek a transfer to protect his chances of being Germany's No. 1 at the World Cup. According to reports, Ter Stegen is both surprised and disappointed by the decision, though polls in the Spanish media suggest the majority of Barcelona supporters back Flick's move. The 2026 tournament represents Ter Stegen's first chance to start at a major competition after spending much of his international career as the backup to Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer, who withdrew from Germany duty after Euro 2024. view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 19:27 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
