He revealed that his daughter Violet will turn two on Thursday. As he spoke, Spaun shared the heartfelt story about his wife Melody giving birth to her, reflecting on another whirlwind week two years ago.
"The last time I played here, it was almost a similar sort of whirlwind," He said. "My daughter was born Monday. My wife didn't get discharged out of the hospital until Tuesday, late Tuesday."
"It was our second born and...she was very nice enough to tell me, if I want to go play, I'll go play. So I flew out here Wednesday night. I got in at like midnight. Luckily, I had like a 1:30 tee time Thursday."

Spaun ended up missing the cut back in 2023, carding rounds of 69-70 and finishing with a score of 1-under par.

"I had a week off before because I'm pretty sure it was the U.S. Open and I wasn't in," Spaun continued. "We had been in the Shea Birthing Center four days prior to that, getting ready, going in and out, being in triage for the birth. So I didn't really touch a club until five days before I even teed it up in the tournament.
"So it was wild to come all the way from Scottsdale to Cromwell was kind of a journey and getting in late. I had to do some extra diaper duty for leaving her so quickly, but we made it work."
With his first major title now secured and his family by his side, J.J. Spaun looks ahead to the rest of the season with confidence.

(AP Photo/Kin Cheung) LONDON (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur retired during her first-round match Monday after taking a medical timeout, the latest issue for her during an injury-filled season. Jabeur, a 30-year-old from Tunisia, quit playing while trailing Viktoriya Tomova 7-6 (5), 2-0. Advertisement Jabeur was visited by a trainer in the first set. At one point, she sat on her sideline seat and cried into a towel. 'I wasn't expecting not to feel good. I have been practicing pretty well the last few days. But I guess these things happen,' Jabeur said afterward. 'I'm pretty sad. Doesn't really help me with my confidence and what I keep pushing myself to do even though it was a very tough season for me. I hope I can feel better.' She lost to Elena Rybakina in the 2022 final and to Marketa Vondrousova in the 2023 final. Jabeur also was a finalist at the 2022 U.S. Open, losing to Iga Swiatek. Jabeur's 2024 season ended early because of a shoulder injury and she's dealt with leg problems this year. ___ AP tennis:

Ons Jabeur retires from first-round Wimbledon match against Viktoriya Tomova

Two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur has exited the 2025 tournament on the opening day after retiring from her first-round match against Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria. Jabeur was a set and a break behind in the match at the All England Club when she shook hands with her opponent. Advertisement The two players had exchanged breaks of serve in a frenetic opening, before Jabeur broke Tomova's serve to get to 2-3 in a game that lasted 22 points. Despite earning the break, the Tunisian called a medical time out, and appeared emotional as she received treatment at the side of the court, including an inspection of her vital signs. Jabeur forced a tiebreak to decide the first set after returning to the court, which she led 5-4, but Tomova took it 7-5 and two games later, the match was over. The 30-year-old has yet to win a Grand Slam, but made two Wimbledon finals in consecutive years; 2022 and 2023. She won the opening set before losing to Elena Rybakina in 2022, before Markéta Vondroušová beat her in straight sets a year later. Jabeur described the latter defeat, her third loss in a Grand Slam final overall, as the most painful of her career. She also reached the 2022 U.S. Open final, where she was beaten by Iga Świątek. Advertisement The former world No. 2 has struggled for form in the 2025 campaign, having been knocked out of the French Open in the first round; her deepest run in a tournament came in Doha, Qatar, where she reached the quarterfinals. Injuries have prevented Jabeur from playing her best tennis for some time: a shoulder injury ended her 2024 season early, while she strained a leg muscle at the Miami Open this spring. Tomova moves on to face either Britain's Sonay Kartal or No. 20 seed Jelena Ostapenko in the second round. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
