Jordan Condemns Israeli Law Banning Diplomatic Missions in East Jerusalem

Al Dustour30-10-2024

Amman
The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates condemned the Israeli Knesset's recent approval of a law that obstructs the establishment of diplomatic missions for the State of Palestine in occupied East Jerusalem.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry said that all Israeli actions aimed at altering the demographic composition, character, and status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly East Jerusalem, are deemed null and void, lacking any legal validity.
Official spokesperson for the ministry, Sufian Qudah, underscored the need for Israel, as the occupying power, to cease all ongoing violations and breaches of the historical and legal status quo in occupied Jerusalem. He called for an end to the policy of imposing new facts on the ground amid Israel's continued aggression in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, along with escalating incursions and attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Qudah emphasized that Israeli attempts to annex occupied Jerusalem violate international law, United Nations Security Council resolutions, and the recent advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice. He reiterated that the Israeli presence in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, constitutes illegal occupation that must be resolved, advocating for a two-state solution that establishes an independent and sovereign Palestinian state along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He renewed his appeal to the international community, particularly the Security Council, to adopt a clear and firm stance against these violations and to take action to halt them.

60 billion: 'Israeli' military struggles to secure funding after war with Iran

A deepening financial dispute between 'Israel's' Defense Ministry, and the Finance Ministry is reportedly hindering military operations and the replenishment of vital defense assets for the "Israeli" military, days after a ceasefire ended a 12-day war with Iran. In a YNET report, the 'Israeli' Defense Ministry is said to seek an additional 60 billion shekels (~17.5 million dollars) to cover the costs of the war against Iran and Gaza; funds which were not allocated in the 2025 budget. However, the Finance Ministry has reportedly refused to approve the additional funding, leading to significant delays in the 'Israeli' military's ability to procure essential munitions, including Arrow missile interceptors and protected vehicles for troops in Gaza. Senior defense officials have accused the Finance Ministry of withholding funds that had already been approved by a joint commission. Sources indicate that the Finance Ministry's reluctance stems from the increased call-up of 'Israeli' reserve soldiers, a measure costing an estimated 1.2 billion shekels per month. The dispute comes amidst revelations that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich was reportedly aware of plans for an attack on Iran and its potential economic ramifications. The 'Israeli' military currently faces an urgent need to replace outdated Hummer jeeps in Gaza, many of which have been damaged or struck by anti-tank missiles. While 632 new jeeps have been ordered, the funds for their acquisition remain tied up. The military is also grappling with a shortage of Air Force munitions and Arrow missile interceptors, both critical for national defense against current threats and potential future escalations – the report by YNET added.

France reaffirms determination to recognize State of Palestine

Ammon News - French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated has affirmed that France is "determined to recognize the State of Palestine," emphasizing the urgent need for international action in light of the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. In an interview with France's LCI news channel, Barrot condemned the killing of hundreds of Palestinian aid seekers by Israeli forces in Gaza, calling it "a disgrace and an affront to human dignity." According to Barrot, at least 500 Palestinians were killed and around 4,000 injured in May alone while trying to access food aid in the besieged Strip. He affirmed that both France and the European Union are ready to support safe and fair food distribution efforts in Gaza. Barrot sharply criticized Israel's current approach, saying that, outside the oversight of the United Nations and international organizations, Israeli forces—supported by the United States—have carried out a limited aid distribution plan since May 27, during which soldiers have reportedly opened fire on Palestinians waiting for food. He noted that this tactic effectively forces civilians to choose between 'starvation or being shot.' Medical sources report that since May 27, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed and more than 4,066 injured while attempting to collect humanitarian aid near distribution points. "There is no justification for the continued Israeli attacks on Gaza," Barrot said. "We are committed to recognizing the State of Palestine, and this will happen as part of a joint initiative that encourages all parties to create the necessary conditions for the establishment of that state." Barrot's remarks come amid a growing wave of international support for Palestinian statehood. On May 22, 2024, Norway, Ireland, and Spain officially announced their recognition of the State of Palestine, effective May 28. Prior to this, eight European Union member states—including Sweden, Poland, and Hungary—had already extended formal recognition. To date, 149 out of 193 United Nations member states officially recognize the State of Palestine.
