Mohd Lutfi's mother relieved his family only suffered injuries in UPSI bus accident
According to her, her son, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, returned her call at 8.30 am, but did not respond earlier.
'He told her that his family was involved in an accident... I saw the video of the accident but I was too sad, to watch it to the end.
'I am grateful that they are safe... I hope my son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren recover quickly,' she said when met at her home in Pondok Ustaz Bakar, Parit Panjang, near here, today.
According to Norlian, her daughter-in-law, Nurul Ain Zakaria, 35, who is still being treated at the Baling Hospital, suffered an injury to her left rib while her granddaughter, Nur Aisyah Nafishah Mohd Lutfi, 6, broke her right leg.
'Nur Aisyah's younger brother (Muhammad Ahsan Nafis, 2) was not injured after falling into the drain and has undergone an X-ray examination.
'Mohd Lutfi has been discharged but is still taking care of his wife and children in the hospital,' she said.
Norlian said her son and daughter-in-law are teachers and had returned to Terengganu to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha with her daughter-in-law's family since last week.
The media previously reported that Perodua Alza driver Mohd Lutfi and his family were involved in an accident involving a bus carrying students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik, Perak, early yesterday morning.
The accident claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students aged between 21 and 23, who were said to be travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Mazli Hamzah, 37, said he first met the businessman in 2024 and exchanged contact numbers with him for business networking purposes. 'In March this year, he called me saying he wanted to meet as he was interested in helping grow my business, including marketing my product overseas. 'We met frequently after that, but in July, he told me about a business opportunity involving investment in a cattle-rearing farm in Thailand, where the cows were meant for Hari Raya Aidiladha,' he said during a press conference at a shopping mall here on Monday (July 28). Mazli added that he was initially sceptical about the offer, but the man, who is in his 40s, later brought him to meet a Tabung Haji officer at Menara Tabung Haji in the city centre. He claimed that both men mostly discussed the cattle-rearing project, which convinced him that it was a legitimate business opportunity. 'Earlier this month, I handed the businessman more than RM100,000. Soon after that, he kept asking me for more money, which made me suspect that he just wanted my money. 'Everything was done verbally, with no black-and-white agreement between us. However, he did provide me with a receipt after I gave him the money to invest,' he said. Mazli added that he continued calling the businessman for updates on the investment, but his calls and WhatsApp messages went unanswered. 'I then went to his restaurant in Bandar Dato Onn and saw him sitting a few tables away. I called his mobile phone, which he glanced at but ignored. 'When I approached him, he saw me and immediately left the restaurant,' he said, adding that he has since lodged a police report. It is learnt that the businessman was fined RM200,000 by the Sessions Court here last year for using a fake 'Datuk' title from Pahang. He had admitted to fraudulently using a letter of endorsement for recipients of a degree, medal or award from Pahang Darul Makmur, believed to be a fake document. The businessman also pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of displaying the Darjah Indera Mahkota Negeri Pahang emblem on his vehicle at the same time and place, which was also believed to be fake. When contacted, Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed that a police report had been lodged and said investigations were ongoing. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

MPV driver arrested over crash that claimed life of 5-year-old pillion rider in Mukah

MUKAH (July 28): Police have confirmed the arrest of a local man in connection with a fatal road accident at KM 21 Mukah-Balingian Road near the Kampung Penipah junction on Friday (July 25). Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the vehicle involved in the accident was also seized to assist with the investigation. 'The 31-year-old suspect, who was the driver of a white Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle (MPV), was detained at around 2.30pm on July 27 after presenting himself at the Mukah District Traffic Police Station to lodge a report,' he said in a statement. The accident claimed the life of a five-year-old boy, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle. He suffered serious head injuries and died while receiving treatment at Mukah Hospital. The 17-year-old male motorcyclist sustained injuries to his face and legs but is reported to be in stable condition. Muhamad Rizal said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. 257 accidents, 22 fatalities recorded on Gerik–Jeli highway as of June 2025
KOTA BARU: From January to June this year, 257 accidents involving 442 vehicles were reported along the East-West Highway (JRTB) Gerik-Jeli. According to Gerik police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman, the accidents included eight fatal cases, resulting in 22 deaths. Among the fatalities were 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), who were killed in a horrific accident on June 9. "The number of deaths reflects the total number of victims who died, as fatal accidents often involve more than one casualty. "For example, a fatal bus crash on June 9 alone claimed 15 lives, all of whom were students from UPSI," he said when contacted today. Abdul Samad added that the 442 vehicles involved in the accidents included 287 cars, followed by 55 multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) or vans, 42 motorcycles, 38 pickup trucks, 17 lorries, and three buses. On July 22, Bernama reported that, according to the 2024 traffic census by the Public Works Department, the JRTB route remains at a good level of service, with its current configuration able to accommodate the present traffic volume. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi reportedly said that a total daily traffic volume of 2,409 vehicles was observed on the JRTB route, with heavy vehicles accounting for 751 vehicles, or 31.2 per cent of the total. "The JRTB route is categorised as hilly terrain, with its alignment designed to follow the contours and topography of the Titiwangsa mountain range. "Its geometric design as the two-lane single carriageway has met the required technical and functional standards for its construction," he said. To improve road safety, Public Works Department director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail said the department has implemented a blackspot treatment programme under its Road Safety Infrastructure Upgrade initiative. Since 2018, 16 accident-prone locations along the route have been identified. "The approach is based on the principle of 'Low Cost, High Impact.' If the treatment method applied is appropriate to the type of accident occurring, the accident rate at those blackspot locations can be reduced at relatively low cost," he said.
