PoJK newspaper vendors on the brink amid declining sales and lack of support

India Gazette20 hours ago
Muzaffarabad [PoJK]. July 7 (ANI): Newspaper vendors in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) are facing an existential crisis, with plummeting sales and a complete absence of institutional support pushing them to the verge of collapse.
According to reports, before the COVID-19 pandemic, newspaper reading was a daily ritual in many households across PoJK.
However, the pandemic brought a sudden halt to this practice. With lockdowns and movement restrictions, newspaper circulation suffered a dramatic decline. Even after restrictions were lifted, the readership never fully recovered, and digital media further eroded the market.
'Before the coronavirus, selling newspapers was a sustainable job. We used to sell around a thousand copies a day. Now, we barely sell a few hundred. Thousands of vendors have left the profession, only a few dozen of us remain,' said Safaid Abbasi, President of the Press Sell Association in PoJK.
Despite their contribution to promoting public awareness and supporting movements, newspaper vendors say they have been sidelined and ignored. Many had played a critical role in distributing material and information during political rallies and protests. Yet, the same system that once relied on their services now turns a blind eye to their plight.
'In my 31 years in this profession, neither the government nor the newspaper publishers have provided a single penny of support. Journalists have made some efforts to raise our issues, but we, the ones called the backbone of rallies and processions, have never been given our due recognition or assistance.' Abbasi lamented.
The decline of newspaper vendors is not just an economic concern; it reflects a deeper erosion of traditional information networks in the region. With no intervention from authorities or media houses, many fear that this vital link between the press and the public may soon vanish altogether. As the digital shift accelerates, the absence of policies to protect traditional media workers leaves hundreds at risk of unemployment, with little hope of recovery. (ANI)

'Those with problems, must bear it': CM Himanta Biswa Sarma as Assam moves to deport Bangladeshi immigrants

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday strongly defended the ongoing eviction drive in parts of the state, reiterating the government's commitment to removing what he termed as "illegal Bangladeshis". Guwahati, Jul 06 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addresses the gathering during 'Bodoland Speaks: From Vision to Action' - a flagship initiative of the Bodoland Territorial Council, at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium in Guwahati on Sunday. (ANI Photo)(Pitamber Newar ) Interacting with media in Kokrajhar, CM Sarma said, "Some people from Karimganj, Dhubri, Chappar, and Silchar are going and settling in Lakhimpur. They have been evicted to protect the freedom and land rights of the local people of Lakhimpur." He further stated that the BJP government's eviction campaign will not be halted under political pressure. "If anyone has a problem with the removal of 350 illegal Bangladeshis, they will have to bear it. Many people have been martyred in the past in the fight to drive Bangladeshis," Sarma said. The Chief Minister also accused opposition leaders of politicising the issue. "Now they are doing politics in the name of this girl to provide security to Bangladeshis. Their objective is to stop the BJP's eviction campaign, but the BJP has gone ahead with it," he added. Sarma emphasized that the campaign will continue in other parts of the state, including Dhubri. "It will happen tomorrow in Dhubri's Chappar. No outsider should be allowed to enter Bodoland," he declared. Earlier on July 5, CM Sarma informed that 18 Bangladeshis, living without valid documents in Assam, were pushed back. He said the pushbacks were done from the Cachar and Sribhumi districts. "Oh look who's going back to their home? In Assam, we welcome guests with open arms but those trying to illegally prolong their stay are treated with the special gesture of PUSHBACK," Sarma said in a post on X. "18 illegal Bangladeshis pushed back today in wee hours from Cachar and Sribhumi," he added.

(ANI VIDEO GRAB) He directed officials to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards those attempting to defile food items or engage in similar disrespectful acts. He stressed that those involved in such actions must face the strictest punishment so that the sacred nature of the Kanwar Yatra is not compromised. The Kanwar Yatra will start on July 11 with the commencement of the Hindu holy month of Shravan or Sawan. The yatra will end on July 23. 'CM Yogi arrived at Hindon airport in Ghaziabad from Lucknow via state aircraft. The chief minister issued instructions to officials to ensure seamless arrangements and security of devotees. He placed special emphasis on maintaining the sanctity of the yatra, ensuring that the faith and enthusiasm of lakhs of devotees remain undisturbed. 'The environment of the yatra must remain peaceful and well-organised at all times,' he said. Yogi Adityanath instructed officials to ensure comprehensive arrangements for tents, food, and other essential facilities along the route. He also directed that cleanliness, electricity, and lighting arrangements along the Kanwar path be of the highest standard. KT Rama Rao slams Congress for targeting BRS workers, questions ‘Indiramma Rajyam' claims

HYDERABAD: Stating that the BRS government never foisted cases against Opposition leaders, BRS working president KT Rama Rao alleged that the present Congress regime was registering cases against the pink party workers for questioning it. 'Is this called Indiramma Raajyam,' Rama Rao asked while addressing the gathering after welcoming several Congress workers and councillors from erstwhile Medak district into the BRS at Telangana Bhavan on Monday. Those who joined the BRS were mostly the followers of Malkajgiri MLA Mynampally Hanumanth Rao. Rama Rao said that people have never seen such a chief minister like A Revanth Reddy. 'The time has come to teach a lesson to Revanth Reddy,' he said. 'Should we only praise the chief minister, without the freedom to express our opinions? Is this what Indiramma's rule is supposed to be? If the Congress fulfils its assurances, people themselves will genuinely praise the chief minister,' Rama Rao said. He alleged that the government failed to implement its assurances like crop loan waiver, increasing the Rythu Bharosa and social security pension amounts. Rama Rao also dismissed the claims of the chief minister that the Congress would win 100 seats in the next Assembly elections. 'People have seen chief ministers like NTR, N Chandrababu Naidu, YS Rajasekhar Reddy, K Rosaiah and KCR. They are now opposing Revanth Reddy as CM,' he said. Meanwhile, BRS MLA T Harish Rao said that KCR provided Rythu Bandhu assistance between two crop seasons, whereas the Congress was distributing it between elections. He recalled that Rythu Bandhu implementation was not stopped even during Covid-19 pandemic. Former Medak MLA Padma Devender Reddy and others were present on the occasion.
