A white van, believed to be the couple's home, was parked at Four Mile Beach at Queensland's Port Douglas on June 26. An unknown man approached the vehicle late at night and smashed the windows, allegedly with a truncheon-style torch, leaving it in need of repairs worth thousands of dollars.
Queensland Police confirmed to Yahoo News they are investigating the incident, after the man allegedly attacked someone inside the vehicle before causing damage and fleeing on foot.
"Initial information indicates at around 11.20pm, an unknown man approached two people inside a vehicle and became involved in a verbal altercation," a Queensland Police spokesperson told Yahoo. "The man has then hit one of the occupants in the vehicle, before causing damage to the vehicle and fleeing."

An alleged witness to the incident claims the couple had spent the day kite surfing and were getting ready for bed when the offender approached.
'He threatened to kill Shane (the gentleman inside the van) and [said] he is going to rip his f**king heart out, and he threatened to smash the van and rape his girlfriend," homeless woman Melinda Laidlaw told the Cairns Post. "This guy is free to come and smash people's vans, he has no right, he should be accountable for the damage caused.
"I'm very upset for my friend who was inside the van, it's just not on," she said.
Melinda was reportedly forced into living in her van after struggling to afford huge rent hikes when rental accommodation near Holloways Beach was impacted by Cyclone Jasper floodwaters in 2023.
Queensland continues to crack down on illegal campers
Queensland has continued to tighten camping restrictions after the state experienced an uptick in the number of tourists and locals flocking to the coast and sleeping in their cars, vans and caravans overnight as a cheap accommodation alternative.
Councils continue to introduce parking restrictions and threaten fines if campers are caught sleeping overnight in coastal car parks, with the most recent incident occurring at Peregian Esplanade and Victory Park in Noosa Heads this week, with fines of $333 warned. Authorities also issued 31 campers fines during one weekend in Noosa this month, illustrating just how significant the problem has become.

Beachgoers horrified after ‘a heap of medical waste' washed ashore
A series of photos have revealed a gross sight at popular beaches in Bali. Posted in the Bali Bogans Facebook page, a user named Kirsty Grist shared pictures of rubbish, including syringes, washed up on Legian and Kuta beaches. Advertisement 'Hey everyone, if you are in this area, especially with little ones, please be careful. There is a heap of medical waste washed up on the beach. We have picked up 2 bags worth of syringes … some with needle ends, some without,' she said. The post was immediately swamped with comments, with some claiming the syringes were simply for shots at local bars, while others didn't believe it had happened at all. One person posted: 'Yuck. That's disgusting.' Another anonymous user commented: 'We stayed at Nusa Dua last month, nice resort, but they need to clean up beach …' Advertisement Another traveller named Liana Haylen commented: 'Yeah it was here on beach in Seminyak last night too. Some are alcohol shots (usually larger ones) but some are the real deal. Be careful folks.' 5 Kirsty Grist claimed she collected '2 bags worth of syringes' on the beach. Kirsty Grist / Facebook Jade Sullivan replied: 'We picked a big one up off the beach the other week at Bloo Lagoon, the needle was huge.' However, one commenter argued it was 'bulls**t' and that they were simply shots. Advertisement One wrote: 'Never seen it, been going to Kuta and Legian for 40 years. Absolute bulls**t. 'Don't put a picture up show me live footage of you finding it. Bet you can't and won't.' Another user named Cassie Hardy responded: 'This is true, we picked up 2 bags worth. Some with exposed needles.' 5 Beachgoers are finding trash washed up on Legian and Kuta beaches. Kirsty Grist / Facebook Advertisement 5 Travelers were stunned Kuta beach was covered in trash. Kirsty Grist / Facebook The original poster also responded saying: 'That's nice. I've been coming here for 9+ years and also haven't seen anything like it. God forbid I try to give holiday goers a heads up. I'll meet you down Legian beach tomorrow and show you exactly where I found them.' An anonymous user responded claiming they had visited the same spot and it was clean. While there are differing accounts of the latest issue, it further exposes one of the ugly realities of the Aussie tourism hotspot. Plastic waste washing up is not an irregular issue, but it usually happens during the wet season of October to March. 5 Kirsty Grist / Facebook reports that Indonesia is second in the world only to China in terms of its contribution to marine plastic pollution due to poor plastic waste management. Kuta and Legian beaches get up to 60 tonnes of plastic trash each year. Advertisement In December 2024, a horrific video from environmental activist Gary Bencheghib, showed the devastating reality of plastic pollution on Kendonganan beach. It required days of clean up as a relentless tidal wave of plastic waste in the oceans washed up on the beaches. But during the wet season, the rubbish will be relentless across the likes of Kuta, Seminyak, Legian and Jimbaran beaches. Advertisement It's an annual phenomenon that sees plastic, garbage, and waste from shipping vessels often carried into land by strong winds, high tides, and driving rains. The island's open landfills are also a huge problem. As they become fuller, they put pressure on local waste management operations. Rubbish is then spilt into waterways and dumped in unofficial landfill sites, often on the edges of some of Bali's most beautiful natural landscapes. Advertisement 5 Plastic waste usually washes up during between October and March. AFP via Getty Images Officials have implemented solutions, and while some have had an impact, more needs to be done. Before the pandemic, Bali welcomed 6.2 million international tourists a year and an estimated 10 million domestic tourists. It has long placed a significant burden on Bali's waste management systems, producing an estimated 1.6 million tonnes of waste.

Questions over old planes as 48 killed in crash An Antonov An-24 passenger plane carrying 48 people crashed in Russia's far east on Thursday as it was preparing to land, killing everyone on board in an incident that spotlighted the continued use of old, Soviet-era aircraft. The burning fuselage of the plane, which was made in 1976, was spotted by a search helicopter after it disappeared from radar screens. It had been attempting to land for a second time after failing to touch down on its first approach, the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. Operated by the privately owned Siberian regional airline Angara, it had been en route from the city of Blagoveshchensk near the Chinese border to Tynda, an important railway junction in the Amur region. It was carrying 42 passengers, including five children, and six crew. The regional governor and federal investigators confirmed that everyone on board had been killed. Investigators said they had opened a criminal case into the suspected violation of air traffic and air transport rules, resulting in the death of more than two people through negligence. The plane had recently passed a technical safety inspection, Russian news agencies reported, and had been involved in four apparently minor incidents since 2018. The crash is likely to raise new questions about the viability of continuing to fly such old planes in far-flung corners of Russia at a time when Western sanctions have crimped Moscow's ability to access investment and spare parts.
