The Grammys Updates Country Music Category Months After Beyoncé's Massive Win For 'Cowboy Carter'

Yahoo17-06-2025
The country music categories at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2026 will look different than before.
Months after Beyoncé took home the awards for "Best Country Album" and "Album of the Year" for her genre-bending eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter," which features the No. 1 country single "Texas Hold 'Em," the Recording Academy's CEO revealed that country musicians approached the board with a proposal for a significant change.
Moving forward, the Grammy Awards will now honor two distinct types of country albums: one featuring a more traditional style of country music, and the other celebrating artists with a more contemporary sound, which often incorporates R&B, pop, and blues.
During the 2025 Grammy Awards, there were 10 country categories in the country and roots field, with one specifically for Best Country Album.
For the upcoming ceremony, which will take place sometime during the first quarter of 2026, that category will be split into two: Best Traditional Country Album and Best Contemporary Country Album.
Other categories, which focus on Americana, bluegrass, folk, and more, will remain.
The Recording Academy's CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., elaborated on the change in an interview with Billboard, adding that country performers approached the academy with their concerns.
'They said, we think we need more space for our music to be celebrated and honored," he told the publication, adding that the proposal had been submitted several times in the past before being passed this year.
'It makes country parallel with what's happening in other genres,' Mason said, 'But it is also creating space for where this genre is going.'
According to Billboard, the Grammys' new Best Traditional Album category will recognize "excellence in albums of traditional country music, both vocal and instrumental."
"Traditional country includes country recordings that adhere to the more traditional sound structures of the country genre, including rhythm and singing style, lyrical content, as well as traditional country instrumentation such as acoustic guitar, steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, piano, electric guitar, and live drums. It also includes sub-genres such as Western, Western Swing, and Outlaw country."
As Mason continued speaking about the Academy's decision to update the country categories at the Grammys, he also suggested that the change will provide more opportunities for artists to be celebrated among their peers.
'The issues have been, traditionally, a lot of people that weren't sure whether [an album] was Americana or roots or folk or country were just jamming everything into one category," he said. 'There are obviously nuances between the different genres. Those experts in those genres understand those nuances, and I'm quite certain now you're going to see the right people going into Americana versus folk versus traditional country. [The change] gives us an opportunity to put things in more specific categories.'
Mason explained that making changes to the way country music is honored at the Grammys enables the Recording Academy to stay current with the genre's evolution.
'I'm hopeful that that community understands that the academy is doing what it always does, which is stay in tune with what's happening in their genre," he finished.
In early 2025, after winning several Grammys for her country album, "Cowboy Carter," Beyoncé faced criticism from online users who believed she wasn't deserving of the honor.
However, during her acceptance speech, the former Destiny's Child member used her platform to share words of encouragement for those watching.
"I think genre [sometimes] is a code-word to keep us in our place as artists," she said. "And I just want to encourage everyone to do what they're passionate about."
After extending her title as the most-awarded artist at the Grammys, Beyoncé announced that she would be taking her album on tour in the summer of 2025, stopping in cities such as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, Paris, London, and more.
From the clips circulating on social media, the three-hour show is yet another electrifying performance from the superstar singer, which also features surprise appearances from her daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter.

Christina Aguilera Rewears Vintage Versace Dress 22 Years Later

Christina Aguilera has us seeing double! To celebrate the West End premiere of Burlesque: The Musical at London's Savoy Theatre, the multi-hyphenate, 44, attended a photocall for the show on Monday, July 21, wearing a gothic glam look she had previously worn 22 years ago. The singer dressed for the occasion in a green Versace dress from the Italian fashion house's fall 2003 collection. Aguilera served as the model for the look back then, posing bare-faced for a campaign shot by famed photographer Steven Meisel. In 2003, Donatella Versace, who stepped down as Versace's creative director after nearly 30 years to become its global ambassador in March, opened up about what it meant to have Aguilera be the face of a campaign for the brand. 'I watch the videos of Christina and I always die. She is a great dancer, a great singer, her voice is amazing. I always hoped I could do something with her, but I wanted to be friends first, that is the most important thing for me," Versace said at the time, per Billboard. This time around, Aguilera put a sexy, rocker spin on the famed corset lace number, wearing her long, straight platinum blonde hair gently pushed back as it fell over the dress's sweetheart neckline. Aguilera paired the asymmetrical design with black knee-high boots that matched her dark lipstick and eye makeup. That same year, she also wore Versace to the MTV Europe Awards. The performer's iconic green Versace dress has been a favorite of many, including Beyoncé, who wore it to the 2003 MTV Movie Awards. Rita Ora wore it to a 2020 New Year's party and Iris Law wore it to a London Fashion Week Party in 2022. Bella Hadid also wore it to a 2022 event. It's no surprise that Aguilera was supporting Burlesque: The Musical as she famously starred in the 2010 film version, Burlesque. In it, she plays Ali, an aspiring singer who moves to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams and begins working at a burlesque lounge run by Tess (played by Cher). This time around, Aguilera is executive producing the stage musical, alongside producers Adam Paulden and Jason Haigh-Ellery, Sue Gilad and Larry Rogowsky, Steven Antin and Clint Culpepper. Some of Aguilera's tunes from the movie are also part of the musical. 5 Best Moments From Coldplay's Music of the Spheres Tour Boston Show

Coldplay's Music of the Spheres Tour has resumed in the United States, hitting cities that they missed during the first round of their tour. Back by fan demand, Coldplay not only added US dates, but added additional international dates at multiple stadiums. More from Billboard Selena Gomez Celebrates 33rd Birthday With Benny Blanco, Taylor Swift & More Mariah Carey 'MC16' Album Details Coming Tomorrow Christina Aguilera Attends 'Burlesque the Musical' in London: See Her Reaction Last night, Coldplay played the first East Coast show of the highly-anticipated U.S. leg of the band's record-breaking Music of the Spheres World Tour to over 66,000 ecstatic fans at Boston's Gillette Stadium. The band first entered Billboard's charts in 2001 with their breakout single 'Yellow,' which peaked at No.48 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its growing popularity over the years has led to multiple successful releases and a strong chart presence, including 27 total entries on the Hot 100, five Top 10 hits, and two No. 1s. The band's 27th and most recent entry is 'Sparks' — originally released in 2000 on Parachutes—which saw a viral resurgence on social media platforms like TikTok. Coldplay's additional tour dates celebrate its tenth studio album, Moon Music, which showcases a variety of sounds, while demonstrating the quartet's stability in the industry and how far they've come since their first album, Parachutes, in 2000. Coldplay's ability to sell out not just arenas but full stadiums has been a consistent hallmark of its touring history. This includes major global runs like the A Head Full of Dreams Tour (2017), the Viva La Vida Tour (2008) and the Mylo Xyloto Tour (2011), which helped cement the band's reputation as one of the most in-demand live acts in the world. The Mylo Xyloto Tour in particular stands out — not only for its scale but for its innovation. It was the first to introduce Xylobands/LED wristbands that light up in sync with the music, pushing the boundaries of fan engagement through technology. There's truly nothing like a Coldplay tour. Following the close of the first leg of its international tour in 2024, it came as no surprise that the second leg — set for 2025 — sold out almost instantly. The band's recent performance at Gillette Stadium marked the latest stop on a global run that spans Latin America, North America and Europe, with multiple-night stops in nearly every major U.S. city due to overwhelming demand. Featuring a stacked set list from multiple albums, from Ghost Stories to Music of the Spheres to Moon Music, the show featured the band's recent hits 'My Universe,' 'Higher Power' and 'Let Somebody Go' alongside classics including 'Yellow,' 'Fix You,' 'Viva La Vida' and 'Adventure of a Lifetime.' Here are the top five moments from Coldplay's first of two performances this week at Boston's Gillette Stadium. 5. Raining Star-Shaped ConfettiThe Music of the Spheres Tour fully embraced its cosmic theme, transforming Gillette Stadium into a galactic dreamscape. Giant helium planets and glowing stars floated above the crowd, creating a surreal, interstellar atmosphere. On the GA floor, bursts of star-shaped confetti rained down on fans, blanketing the audience in shimmering pieces of the galaxy. The combination of visual effects and celestial elements made the entire experience feel like a journey through space — immersive, imaginative and unmistakably Coldplay. 4. Fan-Picked FavoriteColdplay frontman Chris Martin picked four lucky fans from the GA floor, who held up a sign that asked him to play 'In My Place.' Every show, Chris plays a fan requested song on the keyboard, which made a special moment as Chris and one of the fans got their chance to sing with him at the end of the song. 3. Worldwide with 'My Universe'The band performed 'My Universe,' originally featuring K-pop superstars BTS. Although BTS couldn't join in person, the group recorded special video clips that played during the performance. Fans erupted with excitement — while many wished BTS could have appeared live, the inclusion of the song and the pre-recorded footage made the moment a standout highlight and a lasting fan bias. 2. It Was All YellowGillette Stadium was filled with all yellow lights as Chris Martin started singing the beginning lyrics of his band's first Hot 100 hit. Hearing the song that skyrocketed Coldplay into mainstream awareness, fans were immediately brought back to the year 2000, surrounded by lights that painted the stadium in shades of yellow. 1. A Sky Full of Stars and MemoriesDuring 'A Sky Full of Stars,' Chris Martin paused mid-performance, asking the crowd to put their phones away and be fully present in the moment. As they restarted, all 66,000 concert goers' LED wristbands lit up the stadium in perfect sync, casting waves of color across the crowd. Without people's phone screens in the air, the entire audience moved as one, creating a rare, almost spiritual sense of unity. It wasn't just a concert — it was a shared, luminous experience that left fans in awe and cemented the night as unforgettable. Billy Joel Doc Director Gives Update on Singer's Health: ‘He's Doing Physical Therapy, He's Healing'

One of the directors of the upcoming two-part Billy Joel documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, gave an update on the singer's health two months after the 76-year-old 'Piano Man' legend revealed that he'd been diagnosed with the brain disorder normal pressure hydrocephalus. Co-director Susan Lacy told Good Morning America on Wednesday (July 16) that Joel has been 'doing physical therapy, he's healing, he's working on getting better.' In May, Joel canceled all his planned summer shows due to the condition, which can affect vision, hearing and balance. More from Billboard Billy Joel Details Two Suicide Attempts After Affair With Bandmate's Wife in 'And So It Goes' Documentary Iconic Los Angeles Venue the Mayan Theater Announces Closure Billy Strings Goes Death Metal With Cryptopsy Collaboration At the time of the cancelations, Joel said that the decision came after the condition was 'exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance. Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.' According to Cleveland Clinic, the condition occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull, pressing on the brain, affecting the ability to think and concentrate, as well as impacting memory and movement; treatment can involve implanting a shunt to drain the excess fluid. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had first delayed a number of shows planned throughout the summer to undergo treatment following surgery and originally planned to resume his dates on July 5 with a show in Pittsburgh. But in May he canceled all his shows for 2025, which had included stops at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in New York and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, as well as shows in Cincinnati, New Orleans, Santa Clara, Calif., Hollywood, Fla. and Washington D.C. The first part of the documentary — which was co-directed by Jessica Levin — is slated to debut on HBO Max on Friday (July 18); the second part will debut on July 25. The film follows Joel's path from his childhood through his rise to fame, chronicling a number of difficult periods in the singer-songwriter's life, as well as telling the stories behind such beloved songs as 'River of Dreams' and 'New York State of Mind,' among others.
