Star Media Group to launch initiative to empower youths in digital content creation
KUALA LUMPUR: Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) is planning to create a digital ecosystem through a comprehensive talent development programme.
Aimed at strengthening engagement with its young audience, the initiative would focus on empowering youths to create the kind of content they want to consume, said Deputy Executive Editor Christina Chin ( pic ).
'We want to equip young participants of our BRATs (Bright, Roving, Ambitious Talents) programme with the skills, ethics and training of a professional journalist.
'With these, they will have the ability to craft relevant, authentic and most importantly – engaging content, for their peers.
'It's about stories they want to read,' she said, adding that the initiative would encompass the revitalisation of SMG's award-winning R.AGE platform.
Chin said a recent survey by the organisation found that while youths were interested in news, they were particular about how it is presented.
She was speaking during the WAN-INFRA Digital Media Asia 2025 session on 'Digital News Consumption Trends and News Avoidance' on Thursday (April 24).
'They are keen on educational, hyperlocal and global trends.
'The challenge lies in delivering concise, entertaining, relevant, informative and authentic content—elements that hold significant value for this demographic,' she said, adding that collaborations with learning institutions would be key to ensure the initiative's success.
Fellow speaker Amy Ross Arguedas, who is a Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, said trust in the news media has remained stable in many countries last year.
She said the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2024 found that an average of 40% of people trusted news media most of the time.
She said Malaysia, along with Philippines, Japan and South Korea, were among the countries which stood out due to a notable rise in trust levels towards news media.
'There's been a slight uptick in recent years, possibly linked to the Covid-19 pandemic,' she said.
At another session on Thursday, Star Media Group's Head of Technology, Kevin Seng, shared with the audience the Group's success in improving its customer data platform.
Seng spoke about Star Media Group's data-driven strategy in a session titled, 'Effective Use of Data in Newsrooms.'
The two-day WAN-INFRA Digital Media Asia 2025 event ended on Thursday.

Backbenchers Club praises Anwar for US tariff reductions benefiting SMEs
PETALING JAYA: The Backbenchers Club (BBC) commended Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the recent tariff reduction by the United States, as it also enables small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to achieve long-term competitiveness in high-growth sectors. The tariff was reduced from 25% to 19%. 'These efforts are essential not only to absorb the impact of global trade fluctuations but to position Malaysian companies, especially SMEs, for long-term competitiveness in high-growth sectors,' said BBC in a statement on Friday (Aug 1). Although this is a positive step, the BBC highlighted the need to persist with economic reform, expand into new markets, and develop a resilient economy. 'I commend the Prime Minister for defending that space while keeping the door open to meaningful trade engagement with one of our largest partners,' said the statement According to a report in The Star, the new tariff structure would take effect in seven days and apply to goods entering the US for consumption, with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit.

Penang lauds US tariff reduction but urges Putrajaya to seek deeper concessions
Photo: LIM BENG TATT/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has welcomed the decision by the United States to reduce tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25% to 19%, as a right step towards boosting trade competitiveness. He said the decision brings relief to Penang's key sectors, including electrical and electronics (E&E), manufacturing, and medical devices. Penang, known as the "Silicon Valley of the East", is home to more than 350 multinational technology companies and plays a pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain. Chow said however, that while the lower rate was a step in the right direction, it remained only a partial cut. 'We still face strong competition from regional economies that enjoy even lower or zero tariffs under other trade agreements,' he said after launching the state-level National Month celebration and 'Fly the Jalur Gemilang' campaign at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang on Friday (Aug 1). Chow also said the state government sought further clarification from Putrajaya on the broader implications of the cut and the next course of action. He urged the federal government to continue negotiating for deeper tariff concessions, especially in areas where Penang holds strategic economic strengths. 'This is crucial for us to stay competitive in the global supply chain and to attract future high-value investments to Penang and Malaysia as a whole,' he said. Chow added that the state remained committed to supporting local industries and exporters as they navigated evolving trade conditions. On the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which was tabled on Thursday, he said it complemented the state's development goals under Penang2030. "The focus on digitalisation, advanced technology and development of a value-based Madani social system aligned with the state's vision under Penang2030," he said. He added that Penang will continue to mobilise resources and engage its citizens to accelerate the transition to a high-value economy while ensuring a more prosperous life for the people and a sustainable environment. "As the 'Silicon Valley of the East', Penang appreciates the high-value projects listed, which promise strong investment returns. This proves that the state remains a significant contributor to national investment. "The plans can help the state to also realise its goals," said Chow. He also said that the plan will enable the state to empower its people to move towards a high-value economy, improve its image and standing in the global order. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13MP themed "Redesigning Development to Elevate the Dignity of the People', said the next five years would be critical for Malaysia's journey towards becoming a high-income nation.
