Fever's Caitlin Clark not expected to play against Liberty due to groin injury after missing WNBA All-Star festivities

Yahoo6 days ago
Caitlin Clark's status remains in question as the second half of the WNBA season kicks off on Tuesday. After the WNBA All-Star festivities in Indiana, Fever coach Stephanie White shared with the media that there are no updates on Clark's groin injury.
White also noted that Clark will meet with doctors on Monday and Tuesday while traveling to Brooklyn with the team for their game against the New York Liberty.
"I don't expect her to be available on Tuesday," White said. "We're just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluations early this week. And once we have that, hopefully, we'll have a clear mind on what that looks like."
Clark suffered a groin injury in the Fever's win over the Connecticut Sun on July 15. After helping the team establish a healthy lead, Clark was forced to exit the contest with under a minute to go in the fourth quarter. While the Fever secured an 85-77 win, White shared that Clark "felt a little something in her groin" before she frustratedly left the court.
As a result, Clark missed their next game against New York, which the Liberty won 98-77, and she did not participate in the All-Star competitions in front of the Fever's home crowd. Clark was named a 2025 WNBA All-Star captain and committed to play in the 3-point contest.
Clark's Indiana teammate, Lexie Hull, replaced her in the 3-point contest, won by New York's Sabrina Ionescu. She was replaced in the All-Star game by Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell, instead performing coaching duties for Team Clark from the sideline as they fell to Napheesa Collier's team, 151-131.
After staying injury-free through her time at Iowa and her first year in the W, Clark has missed 10 games this season due to groin and quad injuries. Earlier this season, Clark missed five games due to a quad injury. After returning from her first groin strain, Clark is now dealing with a similar injury, having played in just 13 of the Fever's 23 games.
Clark is averaging 16.5 points and 8.8 assists per game, but she has struggled from beyond the arc, making just 27.5% of her attempts from deep — a career-low dating back to her time at Iowa. Her previous career-low shot percentage from 3 came as a sophomore with the Hawkeyes, where she shot 33.2% from beyond the arc.
The Fever are third in the Eastern Conference and sixth in WNBA standings with a 12-11 record. The defending champions have moved to second in the league and first in the East with a 5-6 record. Indiana holds a 1-2 record against New York this season.

Yankees rumors: What rival GMs are saying about Spencer Jones trade

The post Yankees rumors: What rival GMs are saying about Spencer Jones trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Yankees have already had a busy weekend as it pertains to the upcoming MLB trade deadline, and one insider recently reported that the team's most coveted prospect might not be untouchable. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, executives feel that general manager Brian Cashman may be willing to include outfielder Spencer Jones in a potential trade. 'The New York Yankees are open to trading prized outfield prospect Spencer Jones, rival GMs say,' Nightengale wrote. The development comes following two recent trades. New York traded minor league pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz in exchange for former Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon. Shortly thereafter, the Yankees also acquired infielder Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals for right-hander Clayton Beeter and outfielder Browm Martinez. The Yankees have been attempting to make changes and avoid a complete collapse. Despite a strong start to the season, they have gone 14-23 since June 13, and are now 6.5 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. New York has been connected to multiple bullpen arms ahead of the deadline. The team currently is 23rd in terms of bullpen ERA, and could benefit from one or two high-leverage arms. Including Jones in such a deal could sway a rival executive. The 24-year-old has hit 29 total home runs and earned a 1.117 OPS during his 2025 season between both Double-A and Triple-A. 'I've never seen anything like it before,' Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders manager Shelley Duncan told ESPN. 'I've never seen a player this talented before in my life.' Jones' status as an outfielder also complicates a potential promotion, and could partially explain why the front office might be willing to include him in a deal. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Jasson Dominguez form the main outfield contingent for the Yankees, Additionally, Giancarlo Stanton serves as the club's primary designated hitter. It would be a challenge for manager Aaron Boone to find playing time for Jones, especially if Judge is able to return from his flexor strain quickly. 'It's a lot of fun this time of year, just for baseball fans in general, right?' Jones told ESPN. 'I have friends all over the country that are wanting me to go and play for their team. But my heart's here with this organization. I've been having a lot of fun being a Yankee so far in my career. And you take everything with a grain of salt. It's part of it, part of the season and I'm excited to see how things go moving forward.' New York will likely make more moves before next week's deadline, and Jones could be a name to watch carefully. Chicago Sky rule Angel Reese out for Indiana Fever matchup at United Center

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever matchup at the United Center will have neither of its intended headliners. Fever star Caitlin Clark, who has been out since July 16 with a right groin injury, was already ruled out for the game. She sought additional opinions on the injury, which determined there was no additional damage and that she avoided serious injury, but there is still no timetable for her return. Chicago star forward Angel Reese was originally questionable with a back injury, but has since been ruled out about an hour before the game. This is the second straight game Reese will be out, as she also missed Chicago's game against Seattle on Thursday. "It doesn't really change our strategy, I mean, we prepare for Angel when she's on the floor. We know that she's the best rebounder in the league, and the way that they utilize her at that point forward position sometimes creates some challenges," Fever head coach Stephanie White said pregame. "But they also have capable players with size and rebounding ability off the bench. They don't utilize those players the same way they utilize Angel but nonetheless, they have great size, great ability to crash the glass, and they're one of the best rebounding teams in the league." Sky backup guard Hailey Van Lith is also out on Sunday, and guard Courtney Vandersloot is out for the season after an ACL tear, putting the Sky down to eight available players. The league minimum for players available in a single game is seven. Chloe Peterson is the Indiana Fever beat reporter for IndyStar. Reach her at capeterson@ or follow her on X at @chloepeterson67.
