Ukraine launches big drone attack on Russian aviation plant and missile production facility; Moscow...
(Image: Efrem Lukatsky / AP) New Delhi: The Ukrainian army targeted Russian capital Moscow on Friday, July 11 by launching drones in which two people were reportedly killed, as informed by Russian authorities. What targets were hit by Ukraine? Meanwhile, Russian air defences downed 155 Ukrainian drones between 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 and 7 a.m. on Friday, July 11. Out of these 155 drones, 11 were bound for Moscow, Russia's defence ministry said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv said it had attacked a Russian aviation plant and a missile production facility in the Tula region with drones. The army said the overnight attack caused explosions and fires at the aviation plant. Two people were killed in the Thursday overnight and early Friday morning Ukrainian drone attacks. Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia (Federal Air Transport Agency) said three of the four airports in Moscow, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky, temporarily suspended operations as a precaution, which were later resumed. Where did Russia launch counter attacks? Nine people were injured, and a maternity hospital was damaged in Kharkiv in a Russian drone attack. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote on Telegram that mothers with newborns were being taken to a separate medical center. He did not say whether anyone from the hospital was among the injured. Will Trump send weapons to Ukraine? US President Donald Trump said the United States will provide weapons to Ukraine through NATO and will make a major statement on Russia on Monday. Trump will send weapons to Kyiv for the first time since returning to office under a presidential authority often used by previous president Joe Biden. Two sources familiar with the decision said the move signals the president's new interest in Ukraine's defense. A drone crashed onto the territory of an agricultural enterprise in the Lipetsk region, sparking a short-lived fire and killing one person and injuring another, regional governor Igor Artamonov said on Telegram. The Russian defence ministry said that its air defence systems destroyed four drones over the Lipetsk region that lies in Russia's southwest. The ministry only reports the number of drones that its units destroy, not how many Ukraine launches. (With Reuters inputs)

Russian FM Lavrov cautions US, South Korea, Japan against security pact targeting North Korea
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the eastern North Korean city of Wonsan on Friday to hold talks with his North Korean counterpart, Choe Son Hui read more Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, and North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, right, attend a signing ceremony following their talks in Wonsan, North Korea. AP Russia's foreign minister cautioned the United States, South Korea, and Japan against forming a security alliance aimed at North Korea, during a visit to the reclusive nation to discuss expanding military and broader cooperation on Saturday. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the eastern North Korean city of Wonsan on Friday to hold talks with his North Korean counterpart, Choe Son Hui. Bilateral ties between Russia and North Korea have strengthened in recent years. North Korea has provided troops and ammunition in support of Russia's military operations in Ukraine, while receiving military and economic aid in return. This development has drawn concern from the US, South Korea, and others, who worry that Russia may transfer sensitive technologies that could further advance North Korea's nuclear and missile capabilities. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After a meeting with Choe on Saturday, Lavrov accused the US, South Korea and Japan of what he called their military build-ups around North Korea. 'We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia,' he told reporters, according to Russia's state Tass news agency. The US, South Korea and Japan have been expanding or restoring their trilateral military exercises in response to North Korea's advancing nuclear program. On Friday, the three countries held a joint air drill involving US nuclear-capable bombers near the Korean Peninsula, as their top military officers met in Seoul and urged North Korea to cease all unlawful activities that threaten regional security. North Korea views major US-led military drills as invasion rehearsals. It has long argued that it's forced to develop nuclear weapons to defend itself from US military threats. Lavrov said Russia understands North Korea's decision to seek nuclear weapons. 'The technologies used by North Korea are the result of the work of its own scientists. We respect North Korea's aspirations and understand the reasons why it is pursuing a nuclear development,' Lavrov said. During their meeting, Choe reiterated that North Korea 'unconditionally' supports Russia's fight against Ukraine. She described ties between North Korea and Russia as 'the invincible alliance.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Lavrov said he repeated Russia's gratitude for the contribution that North Korean troops made in efforts to repel a Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk border region. Wonsan city, the meeting venue, is where North Korea recently opened a mammoth beach resort that it says can accommodate nearly 20,000 people. In his comments at the start of his meeting with Choe, Lavrov said that 'I am sure that Russian tourists will be increasingly eager to come here. We will do everything we can to facilitate this, creating conditions for this, including air travel,' according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone is at the center of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's push to boost tourism as a way to improve his country's troubled economy. But prospects for the biggest tourist complex in North Korea aren't clear, as the country appears unlikely to fully reopen its borders and embrace Western tourists anytime soon. Synopsis President Zelensky reported a massive Russian aerial assault involving 597 drones and 26 long-range missiles, with Ukrainian forces intercepting a significant portion. He urged Western allies to impose stronger sanctions to halt Russia's intensified attacks, specifically targeting those aiding drone production and profiting from Russian oil exports. Zelensky emphasized the need for immediate action to curb the escalating conflict. AP A fire burns at a residential building after a Russian attack in Kyiv, Ukraine, early Thursday, July 10, 2025. Russia fired 597 drones and 26 long-range missiles overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday, calling for sanctions to stop Russia's recent record barrages. "Twenty-six cruise missiles and 597 attack drones were launched, of which more than half were 'Shaheds'," Zelensky said, referring to Iranian-made drones. The Ukrainian air force said it had downed 319 Shahed drones and 25 missiles, adding that one missile and about 20 drones hit "five locations". It did not called on his Western allies to send "more than just signals" to stop the war launched by Russia in February 2022. "The pace of Russian air strikes requires swift decisions and it can be curbed right now through sanctions," he said. Zelensky specifically urged punishment for those who "help Russia produce drones and profit from oil".Oil exports are important for the Russian economy especially in the face of existing Western sanctions.
