Study: Diets low on processed foods more effective for weight loss

Want to drop some pounds? Drop the ultra-processed foods, a new study says.
People lost twice as much weight on a diet with minimally processed foods compared to one with ultra-processed products, even though both diets were nutritionally matched, researchers reported Aug. 4 in the journal Nature Medicine.
"The global food system at the moment drives diet-related poor health and obesity, particularly because of the wide availability of cheap, unhealthy food," researcher Chris van Tulleken, an associate professor with the University College London, said in a news release.
"This study highlights the importance of ultra-processing in driving health outcomes in addition to the role of nutrients like fat, salt and sugar," van Tulleken said.
Ultra-processed foods are made mostly from substances extracted from whole foods, like saturated fats, starches and added sugars.
They also contain a wide variety of additives to make them more tasty, attractive and shelf-stable, including colors, emulsifiers, flavors and stabilizers.
Examples include packaged baked goods, sugary cereals, frozen pizza, instant soups and deli cold cuts.
For this study, researchers recruited 55 adults to take turns eating a diet of minimally processed or ultra-processed eats.
For eight weeks, participants ate minimally processed meals like oatmeal or homemade spaghetti Bolognese.
Then for another eight weeks, they munched on ultra-processed food like breakfast oat bars or ready-to-eat packaged lasagna.
Meals were delivered to the participants' homes, and they were told to eat as much or as little as they wanted. The people were provided more food than they needed, and not told to limit their intake.
Both types of diets were nutritionally matched in accordance with U.K. guidelines on a healthy, balanced diet, researchers said. They included recommended levels of saturated fat, protein, carbs, salt, fiber and fruits and veggies.
But results show that people lost about 2% of their body weight when eating minimally processed foods, compared with only 1% on the ultra-processed diet.
"Though a 2% reduction may not seem very big, that is only over eight weeks and without people trying to actively reduce their intake," said lead researcher Samuel Dicken, a research fellow at the University College London Center for Obesity Research.
"If we scaled these results up over the course of a year, we'd expect to see a 13% weight reduction in men and a 9% reduction in women on the minimally processed diet, but only a 4% weight reduction in men and 5% in women after the ultra-processed diet," Dicken said in a news release. "Over time this would start to become a big difference."
The observed weight loss corresponded to the average amount of calories people ate on either diet, researchers said.
Participants had a daily 290-calorie deficit on the minimally processed diet, but only a 120-calorie deficit when eating ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods tend to be calorie-dense, so people are more likely to take in more energy even if they eat smaller portions.
People eating a minimally processed diet also had a twofold greater improvement in their overall control over food cravings, compared to when they ate ultra-processed foods, researchers found.
That included a fourfold greater improvement in resisting cravings for savory foods, and a nearly twofold greater improvement in resisting their favorite foods, results show.
"The best advice to people would be to stick as closely to nutritional guidelines as they can by moderating overall energy intake, limiting intake of salt, sugar and saturated fat, and prioritizing high-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, pulses and nuts," senior researcher Dr. Rachel Batterham, an honorary professor with the University College London Center for Obesity Research, said in a news release. "Choosing less processed options such as whole foods and cooking from scratch, rather than ultra-processed, packaged foods or ready meals, is likely to offer additional benefits in terms of body weight, body composition and overall health," Batterham added.

Argentine scientists lead oceanographic expedition in the S. Atlantic

Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Argentine scientists have identified about 40 marine species -- many previously unknown to science -- while leading one of the most significant oceanographic expeditions in the South Atlantic. Aboard the research vessel Falkor (too) and using advanced technology, the team is exploring the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon, uncovering untouched habitats, unusual organisms and clear signs of human impact. The mission, Underwater Oases of Mar del Plata Canyon, is led by Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council in partnership with the California-based nonprofit Schmidt Ocean Institute. At the center of the mission is the ROV SuBastian, a remotely operated submersible used for the first time in Argentine waters. The robot records ultra-high-definition video and collects biological and geochemical samples without disturbing the environment. Thanks to this technology, the expedition is being live-streamed on the Schmidt Ocean Institute's YouTube channel, allowing anyone to tune in and observe the discoveries in real time. The study area lies along the continental slope off Buenos Aires Province, where the warm Brazil Current meets the cold Falklands Current. This convergence creates a unique ecological zone considered a key biogeographic boundary in the South Atlantic. There, the research team is collecting samples at multiple stations to study species distribution, physicochemical conditions of the water, sediment dynamics and the presence of microplastics. More than 30 Argentine specialists are participating in the initiative, representing CONICET research institutes and national universities. The interdisciplinary team includes biologists, geologists, geneticists, ecologists and field technicians who are also developing educational materials and 3D digital models for scientific dissemination. "We've found animals never before recorded in this area, underwater landscapes that look like something from another planet and behaviors that surprise even experienced scientists," said Daniel Lauretta, chief scientist of the expedition, in a CONICET statement. "SuBastian is like having a submarine with ultra-sensitive eyes that dives for us and shows everything in stunning detail," he added. In addition to its scientific value, the project aims to foster public engagement and promote the conservation of vulnerable ecosystems. The data collected will be released through open-access repositories such as CONICET Digital, OBIS, and GenBank. This mission is part of a research initiative launched by CONICET more than a decade ago, which included the Continental Slope I, II and III campaigns. Unlike those efforts, which relied on trawl nets, the current approach allows scientists to observe marine life in its natural habitat and document previously unknown interactions.

Study suggests more effective treatment for binge eating than CBT

The method, called "regulation of cues," reduced patients' odds of binge eating by 20% compared to those who got standard cognitive-behavioral therapy, researchers reported Aug. 4 in JAMA Network Open. "The study showed that our treatment could reduce binge eating more than standard therapy even after the six-month follow up," researcher Kerri Boutelle, a professor of pediatrics at the University of California-San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, said in a news release. Regulation of cues helps people by teaching them to become more attuned to the signals sent by their body when they are naturally hungry or full, researchers said in background notes. Many people with eating disorders have lost touch with these signals or tend to ignore them. The therapy also helps people learn to distinguish between true physical hunger and cravings driven by emotions, and also to resist the temptation posed by foods that can trigger overeating. For this new study, researchers recruited 129 overweight or obese veterans being treated by the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System. All the vets either had binge eating disorder or were at high risk. Binge eating -- uncontrollably consuming large amounts of food -- is common among military veterans, affecting 65% of female and 45% of male vets, researchers said. Military service frequently requires people to eat on the run or go without food, putting veterans at greater risk for binge eating. The first-line treatment for binge eating is cognitive-behavioral therapy, in which people normalize their eating habits and address thoughts and behaviors that contribute to binging, researchers said. But CBT doesn't result in meaningful or lasting weight loss, researchers noted. Researchers randomly assigned 63 of the patients to undergo regulation-of-cues therapy alongside a weight-loss program that included calorie monitoring and exercise. The rest received standard CBT. Those who received regulation-of-cues therapy had a lower risk of binge eating, and also lost a greater amount of weight after five months, results show. However, the weight differences did not last longer. "These findings suggest that targeting how individuals respond to food cues, rather than just focusing on eating behaviors or thoughts, may offer a more effective and lasting treatment for binge eating," Boutelle said.
