Of the three planned freight corridors, East-coast corridor is on the priority for approval: DFCCIL MD
Speaking on the sidelines of the Global Heavy Haul Seminar 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL on Friday said the company will prioritise the East-coast corridor — Kharagpur in West Bengal to Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh — for approval, which is one of the three newly proposed corridors whose Detailed Project Report was submitted to the Ministry of Railways, and awaits sanction.
'The Ministry of Railways will take decisions on these projects. For sanctioning of these projects, we will prioritize the East-coast corridor, which runs from Kharagpur in West Bengal to Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. After that, the decision on the approval of the East-West corridor (Kharagpur to Palghar) and the North-South corridor (Itarsi to Vijayawada) may be taken. It will require an investment of 4.5 lakh crore for these three corridors,' said Kumar.
The last stretch of the 1,506 km long WDFC, from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to JNPT (Navi Mumbai) will be commissioned by December, Kumar added. The 1,856 km long Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor from Ludhiana (Punjab) to Dakuni (West Bengal), is fully operational.
'Because of these two corridors the speed of trains have increased to about 45 to 50 km/h. While the speed of trains on other Indian Railways networks is 20-25km/h. Though our section and locomotives are capable of running 100 kmph, the speed of rolling stock (wagon) is limited. Western corridor has mostly container traffic and the Eastern corridor has mostly coal traffic. Because of deployment of new technology on the corridor, the transit time has reduced by almost 50 percent. The thermal power plants have also reduced their inventory because of trustworthy freight operation on these corridors,' said Kumar to The Indian Express.
He further said that because freight has shifted to the DFCC network, the passenger service has also improved.
'The punctuality of adjoining railways such as North Central Railway (NCR), North Western Railway (NWR), Northern Railway, Eastern Railway and East Central Railway (ECR) has improved because there is no pressure for running freight trains on their network. Currently, we are running around 400 trains on DFCC and the potential is to run 480 trains once the JNPT is connected. Our total network is 4 percent of Indian Railways and we carry 13 percent of total Gross tonne-kilometres (GTKM),' said DFCCIL MD.
Praveen Kumar also said that DFCCIL is taking up many business development projects and establishing Gati Shakti Multi-Modal terminal in a big way.
'We have commissioned four terminals so far and in this financial year, we are planning to commission six more terminals. We have a special scheme called Truck on Train (TOT). We have started carrying milk trucks from Palanpur in Gujarat to Rewari in Haryana. It will provide last mile connectivity. This traffic was earlier going on Highways,' said Kumar.
Talking about the purpose of the seminar, MD Kumar said that experts from different countries shared technologies developed in the heavy haul sector and it will be implemented in DFCC to improve efficiency of the network.

U'khand eateries on Kanwar route to display food licences
Dehradun: Uttarakhand govt on Tuesday directed all eateries and food businesses along the Kanwar yatra routes to prominently display their food licences or registration certificates, warning that failure to do so may lead to shop closures and cancellation of licences. The order applies to all food businesses on the route. The certificates include the name, photo and other details of the holder. An official communication added, "Uttarakhand govt urges all religious institutions and vendors to respect devotees' faith by serving safe, pure and quality food. The aim is to balance faith and health on this sacred journey." Last year, both the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand govts had directed food joint owners to display names and identity details outside their shops. Supreme Court stayed that directive, observing that no one can be forced to reveal such information. Officials clarified that the current order "only mandates display of the food licence or registration certificate, not personal identities." Food licences and registration certificates issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 carry a 14-digit licence or registration number, name and permanent address of the food business operator, location of the authorised premises, and the kind of business permitted — such as hotel, restaurant, or petty food retail. The documents also list the categories of food items approved for handling, the name and contact details of the person responsible for operations, and the validity period of the licence. Small vendors and stall operators must also carry and display their photo ID and registration certificate. "Hotels, eateries and restaurants should have a 'food safety display board' in a visible spot to inform customers about the person responsible for food quality. Non-compliance will invite action under section 55 of the Food Safety Act, 2006, with fines up to Rs 2 lakh," Kumar added. The health department has formed a strict action plan to ensure safe and pure food through extensive monitoring. Kumar said all food businesses along the route have been given essential instructions that must be followed. "There will be no compromise on food quality at tents, food centres and other locations during the yatra. Immediate legal action will be taken against those involved in adulteration or standard violations. Pilgrims' health is our top priority," he said. Food safety officer teams have been deployed in Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Uttarkashi. "These teams will regularly collect samples of milk, sweets, oil, spices and beverages from tents and send them for lab testing. If a sample fails, the site will be shut down," Kumar added. Posters, banners, leaflets and social media are being used to raise awareness. Complaints on food quality can be made on the govt toll-free number – 18001804246. "Administrative teams will respond swiftly," he said. Additional commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration Tajbar Singh Jaggi said those found guilty of adulteration or rule violations will face fines and criminal action. "Public and shop operators will be informed about food regulations and consumer rights via IEC mediums," he said. Daily action reports will be sent from each district. "Senior officials have been assigned monitoring duties, and any negligence will result in strict action," Jaggi said. Andhra govt notifies capital region land pooling scheme rules for building greenfield Amaravati
Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday notified the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Land Pooling Scheme (Formulation and Implementation) Rules, 2025, which will govern the unique method of pooling land for building the greenfield capital city of Amaravati. S Suresh Kumar, principal secretary to the government, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, said these rules shall apply to the 'capital region' except the 'capital city area' which will continue to be governed by the Andhra Pradesh Capital City Land Pooling Scheme (Formulation and Implementation) Rules, 2015. "In keeping with the will of the Government to build 'People's Capital' and for building the necessary concomitant infrastructural projects like airports, ports and all other necessary projects, the procurement mechanism of the land has been designed to be a voluntary scheme," said Kumar in a government order (GO). It is based on mutual consensus between the landowners and the state/authority, said Kumar, adding that this is a unique method of procurement of land, which is named and styled as 'Land Pooling Scheme'. The 'Land Pooling Scheme' rules come at a time when the government is planning to turn greenfield capital city Amaravati into a 'mega city' by combining adjacent Mangalagiri, Tadepalli, Guntur, and Vijayawada with Amaravati. This endeavour aims to pool an additional 40,000 acres of land, besides the 54,000 acres of land on which the government is already sitting for Amaravati. The government is planning to build an international airport in Amaravati. The 'Land Pooling Scheme' has been designed for developing the Capital Region wherein the land parcels owned by individual farmers and owners or group of owners are consolidated by the authority under a development scheme, he said. According to Kumar, the 'Land Pooling Scheme' is a better scheme formulated by the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature owing to the mandate enabled under Sections 107 and 108 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. "The broad objective of the scheme is to do justice to the families affected by the construction of a Livable and Sustainable Capital Region for the State of Andhra Pradesh and also to the farmers and land owners in the Capital Region and also to make them avail a better compensation and also with a view to make them Partners in the State Development Process," said the principal secretary. It is designed in such a manner that the participant land owners are fairly compensated with the allotment of the reconstituted plot along with the developed infrastructure, among other benefits, said Kumar.

Wall Street Live: US stocks edge down as investors monitor trade talks
US stocks were mixed on Tuesday as investors monitor progress on trade talks and a voting marathon in Washington over President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill. As of 10:15 AM Eastern time, the S&P 500 was 0.1% lower, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.2% lower. At the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 33.3 points, or 0.08%, to 44,061.49. The S&P 500 fell 17.7 points, or 0.29%, to 6,187.25, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 79.1 points, or 0.39%, to 20,290.611. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury edged up to 4.26% from 4.24% late on Monday. The 2-year Treasury yield rose more sharply to 3.77% from 3.72%. On the economic data front, markets assessed mixed reports on the US manufacturing. A report from the Institute for Supply Management said US manufacturing activity shrank again in June, while S&P Global's report said manufacturing production returned to growth in June after three months of decline. Fed Chair Jerome Powell in Europe said on Tuesday that he wants to wait for more evidence about how much Trump's tariffs will affect the economy and inflation before resuming cuts to interest rates.
