Ashley Tisdale says Sharpay Evans is the 'most iconic' High School Musical character
Ashley Tisdale thinks her High School Musical character is the "most iconic" of them all.
The 39-year-old actress played wannabe stage star Sharpay Evans in the hit Disney film series and claimed more than 15 years after the final instalment was released that her alter-ego has gone on to become the most memorable amongst fans.
She told People: "When I played the character of Sharpay — I think it was probably what made her so funny — was that I truly thought [Sharpay] was the popular girl in school. I thought Sharpay was popular, and I played it like she was popular.
"And [director] Kenny Ortega enhanced that. He really made me feel like I was popular. But what's so funny is that she's not the popular girl. She's the drama queen. And my husband's like, 'That's what's so funny about how you played it. You really thought you were popular."
"Sharpay is — I swear she's mother to everybody — because it's like she just keeps coming back on these memes and people keep talking and doing the songs.
"And I'm just like, I mean, out of everyone in High School Musical, my character is the most iconic. It's so cool."
The High School Musical series initially followed Zac Efron as East High's star basketball player and how he broke free of the high school clique system as he and top student Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) sought out leading roles in a school play.
Ashley also made her name starring in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody for Disney Channel, and recently reprised her role of Candace in a reboot of Phineas and Ferb, but ultimately "can't believe" that a string of failed auditions led her to a part in a franchise that became such a success.
She added: "I mean, it's so cool … It's really awesome to be a part of these projects that have really been so prevalent in pop culture and to play these characters.
"It's just, you're like, 'Dang, man.' I can't believe out of everything that I auditioned for [...] I got this animation [series] that has lasted this long. Or I was always trying to get a Disney movie, and never got the movie. And then, I got High School Musical.
"Out of all the ones, I get that. This is pretty awesome."

Hero dad dives into sea to save daughter who fell from Disney Dream cruise, treading water for 20 minutes before they're pulled to safety
A fearless father jumped off a Disney cruise ship when his daughter fell overboard Sunday — miraculously grabbing her and then treading water for around 20 minutes until they were rescued. The Disney Dream ship was heading from Florida to the Bahamas when an alert suddenly boomed, 'Mr MOB … port side!' referring to 'man overboard,' video of the drama shows. 'A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck & her dad went in after her,' fellow passenger Kevin Furuta posted on Facebook. Other tense vacationers watched as a bright yellow rescue boat was lowered into the water and eventually made its way to where the dad and daughter were bobbing in the Atlantic as they were drifting off. The dad spent around 20 minutes in the sea holding his daughter — who appeared to be about 5 — before they were both pulled to safety, according to online posts. 'Lots of praying folks on this ship!' posted passenger Dewayne Smith, who also reported that the 'little girl fell overboard and her dad jumped overboard to try to save her.' 'Both the little girl and dad were both successfully rescued.' It was not immediately clear how the girl fell into the ocean. The fourth deck of the ship is one of the lowest publicly accessible platforms, likely fewer than 50 feet above the waterline. It contains bars, a theater and an outdoor jogging track, according to a plan on the Disney Cruise Line website. The deck is open-air, although its railings are chest-height to an adult, or higher than most kids' heads. The railings also have plexiglass panels to prevent climbing on their bars. Disney Cruise Line confirmed that its crew 'swiftly rescued two guests from the water. 'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes,' a rep told USA Today in a statement. 'We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Disney cruise liners each are equipped with an overboard detection system that alerts the ship's crew to people tumbling from the vessel into the sea in real time. -Additional reporting by Jared Downing Originally published as Hero dad dives into sea to save daughter who fell from Disney Dream cruise, treading water for 20 minutes before they're pulled to safety

1980s pop legend Debbie Gibson reveals 'terrifying' career move
Debbie Gibson has found it "terrifying" to write her memoir. The 54-year-old singer has told her life story for the first time in her tome Eternally Electric: The Message in My Music - which is due for release on September 9 - and has found it all "cathartic and exhausting process" but ultimately hopes to "inspire" others. She told PEOPLE: "I mean, listen, it's terrifying, the idea of putting out a book. Somebody said, 'Is it harder than writing a song?' "I'm like, a song is four minutes, and a book is 90,000 words. "It has been such a cathartic and exhausting process. The motivation behind everything I do is to hopefully inspire people." The Foolish Beat hitmaker thinks that readers may be surprised at what she has been through in her life but hopes that they will learn that they too can "turn it around" like she did. She said: "I always felt like the girl who was like, people would say, 'Well, if you could do it, I could do it.' I hope they read this book and they say, 'Oh my God, you went through that? I went through that. And you turned that around. Great, I want to turn that around." Debbie - who shot to fame as a teenager with her debut album Out of the Blue and later branched out into a career in TV and film as well as Broadway theatre - has been on a US tour recently and reflected that the whole experience has been "very, very profound and meaningful" because it has informed how she has written the book. She said: "I actually kind of set certain things around being at certain shows, and I've tried to take the reader on the journey with me with stops in the present and looking back at the same time. "It's very, very profound and meaningful."

Hero dad jumps overboard Disney cruise to save daughter
Father leapt overboard after daughter fell from cruise ship. A dad has jumped into the ocean to save his daughter after she fell overboard from the fourth deck on a Disney cruise on Sunday, according to officials and multiple news reports. The Disney Dream was returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday following a four-night cruise in the Bahamas and made a stop at Disney's Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, where the incident took place. 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' Disney Cruise Line told People. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. According to posts in the unofficial Disney Dream Cruise Ship Facebook group, where passengers often share updates and experiences, a young girl fell overboard from the ship's fourth deck and a man identified as her father immediately jumped in after her. 'Her dad went in after her,' passenger Kevin Furuta wrote. 'Right after the incident, we heard on the loudspeaker, 'MOB (man overboard) Port side!! Thankfully, the (Disney) rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved!' In a separate post, passenger Mary Ann Sutherland wrote, 'A little girl fell overboard and her father jumped in to save her … apparently the dad sat her on the railing!' After treading water for about 20 minutes with his daughter in his arms, they were both rescued by member of the ship's crew. In video footage posted on Facebook by passenger Janice Martin-Asuque, who is believed to have witnessed the incident, a lifeboat can be seen floating in the choppy waters with people sitting inside. 'We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests,' Disney Cruise Line added in their statement to People. 'This incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Another angle of the rescue has been shared on TikTok, with the user describing the scene as a 'miracle'. No injuries were reported from the incident.
