Cabinet approves pension increase for military retirees, veterans
The decision, announced during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, coincides with Veterans Day.
The adjustment will benefit some 17,000 retired military personnel at a total cost of around JD5 million, to be financed by the Ministry of Finance's Directorate of Pensions and the Social Security Corporation. It also ensures parity between military pensioners who receive their pensions from the Social Security and those who receive their pensions through the Ministry of Finance.
The move corrects a long-standing disparity affecting older military pensioners, whose pensions ranged from JD220 to JD350. As new military pensions already start at JD350, the decision brings older pensioners into line with current standards.
Prime Minister Hassan reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting veterans, recognising their service as an integral part of the nation. He emphasised that they remain a trusted pillar of society and a valuable source of experience, enjoying the full confidence of His Majesty King Abdullah.
The government is also working with the Economic and Social Association of Retired Servicemen and Veterans and other institutions to allocate agricultural land and support cooperatives that create economic opportunities for retired military personnel.

The tank will expand ammonia storage capacity to 55,000 tons, supporting future fertilizer production projects and meeting the highest safety and technical standards. He also laid the foundation stone for a project by the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company to construct two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks at its Aqaba facility. With a combined capacity of 2,000 metric tons and a total cost exceeding 15 million dinars, the project aims to enhance LPG storage and distribution infrastructure, reduce transportation costs, and strengthen energy supply security. Additionally, the Prime Minister inspected progress at the International Marine Reserve Center of Aqaba, a project launched under Royal directives as a global model for the protection of the Gulf of Aqaba's unique coral reefs. His tour concluded with a visit to Aqaba Container Terminal, one of the Kingdom's most successful public-private partnership projects. New investment agreements were signed last October to transform the terminal into a green port, with total investments reaching $242 million.

The Cabinet focused on ensuring the effective performance of municipalities across the Kingdom. Minister of Local Administration Walid Al-Masri briefed the Cabinet on the work of newly formed temporary committees, outlining their mandates and future monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. The Cabinet emphasized that these temporary committees must operate in full coordination with relevant bodies to improve municipal services, enhance governance, develop infrastructure, automate services, and complete citizen-centric projects. Continuous evaluation of the committees' work and service quality will be maintained. Discussions also covered next steps to advance legislative reforms governing local administration, aligning with the government's commitment to modernize these laws and streamline municipal operations. This measure aims to attract more airlines and tourists to Jordan, particularly Aqaba, by reducing flight costs, thereby boosting the tourism sector's contribution to the national economy. In the energy sector, the Cabinet approved the rationale for a draft bylaw governing the establishment, licensing, operation, and maintenance of independent electricity transmission systems. This move aligns with the new Public Electricity Law (No. 10 of 2025), published on May 15, 2025, and effective mid-August. The new system is designed to encourage investment and competition in green hydrogen and other economically vital energy projects, consistent with the National Energy Strategy and the Economic Modernization Vision. Furthermore, the Cabinet sanctioned the settlement of 672 outstanding cases between taxpayers and the Income and Sales Tax Department. These include: Reaching 60 years of age for insured males Reaching 55 years of age for insured females Having at least 180 total monthly contributions (equivalent to 15 years), of which 84 contributions must be actual (7 years) 'Actual contributions' refer to: Mandatory contributions through employment Voluntary contributions Periods covered by unemployment benefits The SSC added that those who reach the retirement age but haven't completed the required contribution period still have several options to become eligible: Purchasing the remaining years needed to reach the minimum contribution period, provided they have already completed at least 84 actual contributions. Continuing to work beyond the retirement age through: Their current employer A new employer Voluntary contributions, available for Jordanians not currently employed The SSC emphasized the flexibility offered by these options to help insured individuals meet the required criteria for receiving retirement benefits.
