Israel's National Anthem Back In Focus, Internet Can't Unhear Its Likeness To This Bollywood Song

Many social media users questioned whether one borrowed from the other- or whether the resemblance is purely coincidental.
Social media users believe that there is a striking similarity between Israel's national anthem Hatikvah and the 1996 Bollywood patriotic song Mera Mulk Mera Desh, composed by Anu Malik for the film Diljale- and they are not wrong. Sharing side-by-side audio clips of the two tracks, many users on X (formerly Twitter) questioned whether one borrowed from the other- or whether the resemblance is purely coincidental.
The online debate quickly spiraled into memes as users reacted with a mix of sarcasm and frustration. 'This too? Is anything original?" one wrote while another quipped, 'Anu Malik's Spotify is just international radio with a filter." Several posts resurfaced old clips comparing Anu Malik's work to other global hits, turning the anthem controversy into a moment of deja vu.
While accusations of plagiarism have been aimed at Anu Malik in the past, this particular case is more complicated than it appears. The melody of Hatikvah was adapted in 1887 by Samuel Cohen, who drew inspiration from La Mantovana, a 16th-century Italian folk tune composed by Giuseppe Cenci. The anthem was officially adopted by Israel in 1948.
Anu Malik's composition, which features vocals by Kumar Sanu, appears to echo the same musical structure. This isn't the first time the similarity has drawn attention. In 2023, Naor Gilon, former Israel's ambassador to India, shared an audio clip of Mera Mulk Mera Desh on social media, alongside the flags of both nations. In his post, Naor Gilon noted the uncanny melodic resemblance to Hatikvah, writing that the Indian song had deeply moved him and that its lyrics resonated 'like a beacon of hope and unity."
Anu Malik has previously faced criticism for several songs that closely mirrored international hits- from Wham!'s Last Christmas and Linear's Sending All My Love to Toto Cutugno's L'Italiano.
In the case of Mera Mulk Mera Desh, however, the accusation of plagiarism seems less clear-cut. Both songs appear to draw from the same source- La Mantovana- a melody that has travelled across continents, adapted into classical music, folk traditions and national anthems.

After the episode was aired, Elvish's fans expressed disappointment and slammed the actress. Therefore, on Tuesday, Divyanka commented under one of her posts, calling out the hate, while also thanking genuine fans. 'I want to thank genuine Elvish fans for being nice. True fans, first keep their idol's respect in mind. Double thanks to the trollers for increasing my engagement (sic)," she wrote. 'My inner systumm automatically bounces back your foul language to you and your family. Karma! Those being nice shall always be blessed…says my core divinity! (sic)," the actress added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Osbourne's death comes just weeks after the band played their farewell gig in his home city of Birmingham. Osbourne's family broke the news of X (formerly Twitter), 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis' Black Sabbath has "lost our brother", said the band's co-founder Tony Iommi, while bassist Terence "Geezer" Butler remembered their final gig and drummer Bill Ward shared a photo of them together. Queen's Brian May, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Metallica, the Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood and Yungblud all paid tribute to the 'Prince of Darness'. Ozzy Osbourne, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2019, was known for energetic and controversial live shows - while many fans also got to know him through reality TV show The Osbournes It's impossible to put into words what Ozzy Osbourne has meant to Metallica. Hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and, most of all, friend are a few that come to mind. Ozzy and Sharon believed in us and transformed our lives and careers. He taught us how to play in the big leagues while at the same time being warm, welcoming, engaging, and all around brilliant. We are heartbroken and devastated by this loss and send our love and condolences to Sharon and their family, bandmates, and his very large circle of friends. He left an incredible legacy and will be sorely missed. The Instagram account for AC/DC posted a tribute to Ozzy on social media saying, "So sad! A great loss to all that loved him," the post says. Thanks for the ride Ozzy, love from the other Brummies.' UB40's Ali Campbell, who was also born in Birmingham, called him the 'undisputed king of heavy Metal' before adding: 'You didn't just shape a culture, you defined it. 'We were with him in Birmingham just over a week ago talking about how incredible Back to the Beginning was. Ozzy was in a great mood, laughing and cracking us up.' The official account of US heavy metal band Pantera posted: 'Thank you for all that you did for metal & Pantera. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.' Metallica's official account simply shared a broken heart emoji. Rapper Flavor Flav wrote that he was 'heartbroken' over the news and they 'go way back'. He went on to write that he was 'sending my love and prayers' to the Osbourne family. Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shared a picture of Osbourne on his Instagram account, adding: 'No words. We love you Ozzy.' Bush singer Gavin Rossdale also paid tribute, calling him 'so warm and kind and funny' and 'a great man'. English singer-songwriter Yungblud, who recently performed alongside Osbourne, wrote that he is 'heartbroken' over the loss. 'You asked me once if there was anything you could do for me and as I said then and as I will say now for all of us the music was enough,' he wrote. 'You took us on your adventure – an adventure that started it all.' Former professional boxer Frank Bruno called him 'a character a funny man and a legend who we will not see the likes of ever again' while Aquaman star Jason Momoa shared a picture of himself with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, calling himself 'grateful' to have met them.
