Two British boys, 11 and 13, drown off Catalan coast, Spanish officials say
The Spanish General Directorate of Civil Protection said in a statement that the two boys died on Tuesday evening after getting into difficulty off Llarga beach in Salou, Tarragones, Catalonia.
Their father had entered the water with them and was rescued, it added.
Catalan police told Sky News there was a yellow flag - meaning swimming is permitted but with caution due to potential hazards - at the time the children went into the sea.
They added that it appeared the boys had difficulty getting back to the beach as they struggled with the high tide in a rocky part of the coastline.
Officers also said the father was resuscitated after receiving CPR for several minutes and that the family was staying in a hotel just in front of Llarga beach.

The General Directorate of Civil Protection added in its statement that emergency services were called to the area at 8.47pm.
Seven ground units from the Medical Emergency System (SEM) were involved in the response.
It brings the number of deaths on Catalan beaches this summer to 16, the directorate added.
The Salou Local Police, the Mossos d'Esquadra regional police force and the Generalitat Fire Department also responded to the incident.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of two British children who have died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."

Man linked to ‘one of London's most dangerous crime gangs' arrested
A British man accused of being an assassin has been arrested in the Costa del Sol. The suspect, who was reported by officers to be on the run and having links with 'one of London's most dangerous crime gangs', was found to have pistols, ammunition and a silencer in his crashed Nissan Qashqai following his arrest. He is alleged to have harassed two Dutch women after getting them to buy him cocaine in an incident at a petrol station and crashed his car, according to the local paper Diario Sur. The man, who is wanted for 'several murders', attempted to flee as officers arrived at the scene, in an area known as Riviera, between La Cala de Mijas and Marbella, it was reported by The Sun. A spokesperson for Mijas police said: 'A British man has been arrested in Riviera who had a warrant out for him ordering his remand in prison for murder.' He added: 'While conducting surveillance work in La Cala de Mijas, officers were called yesterday to deal with an altercation at a petrol station in the area. 'Upon arrival, they interviewed a customer at the station who stated that a foreign man who had been harassing her had already driven away from the scene. 'Shortly afterwards, a call was received alerting us to an accident on Orfebres Street in Riviera. 'Upon arrival the officers found a damaged vehicle that matched the one involved in the incident at the petrol station.' The images of the wreckage showed two pistols, ammunition, a silencer, a notebook with names and addresses, along with a book titled 'Practical Buddhism and the Search for Self' within the vehicle. Diario Sur reported on Saturday: 'An investigation remains open to clarify his links with organised crime.' Woman dead, 6 injured after crash in Vaughan, police say
A woman is dead and six people were injured after a two-vehicle collision in Vaughan on Saturday night, York Regional Police say. Police, fire and paramedics responded to the collision around 11 p.m. near Highway 27 and Rutherford Road, police said in a post on X. One of the cars was on fire and all occupants exited that vehicle, the post read. The victim, 69, was a passenger in one of the vehicles, police said. The six people who were injured have been taken to local hospitals. The intersection will be closed for several hours for the investigation.
