Runaway goat attempts to ram cyclist off bike in freak incident during Giro d'Italia
The bizarre incident occurred during the 160km stage of the prestigious race, which started and finished in the Albanian town of Vlorë, as the peloton was on its fast descent down a hill.
Smith, who rides for the Intermarche–Wanty team, said he had spotted a small herd of goats by the side of the road and moved to the right-hand side to avoid any potential collision.
Unfortunately for him, one of the goats decided to dart across the road, right into the cyclist's path.
Perhaps anticipating the collision, video footage showed the goat leaping into the air and brushing Smith's leg and back wheel.
The rider was pushed onto the grass verge as a result, but managed to stay on his bike and rejoin the road shortly after. Meanwhile, the goat appeared unharmed and trotted away.
'I didn't have too much time to think. I could see it 10 seconds before, the policeman was trying to keep them all in, and then one or two started coming across,' Smith said, adding that he still loves animals.
'I mean, what can I say? I didn't know which way I was going to go, and everyone else went left. I chose right, but in the end, it was fine.'
It's certainly not the first time a wild animal has caused chaos during the Giro d'Italia.
In 2023, a dog caused a pileup after running onto the road, forcing several cyclists to slam on the brakes in rainy conditions.
Speaking after this year's incident, Smith said he had been on alert for stray animals, but just never expected an issue with a goat.
'I probably expected more of a wild dog, but I guess there's a lot more goats down here,' he said, per Reuters.
'Albania's been great and it's beautiful down the south here. They've done really well and I've enjoyed it. It's been a different experience, just watch out for the goats!'

Though McKeown has owned the biggest meets, the rivalry is still one of the best in swimming. Smith is the current world-record holder, setting the mark of 57.12 at last year's U.S. Olympic trials. She also set the Olympic record of 57.28 in Paris — the event's second-best time ever before Tuesday — but it came in the women's medley relay, in which the U.S. beat McKeown's Australian squad for gold. Chicago White Sox get their 41st win — matching last year's total — by beating Los Angeles Angels 6-3
ANAHEIM, Calif. — It wasn't the ideal beginning for Chicago White Sox pitcher Shane Smith in his return from the injured list Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Pitching for the first time since July 11 — excluding the two batters he faced in the All-Star Game on July 15 — Smith walked Zach Neto, surrendered a single to Nolan Schanuel and walked Taylor Ward. That loaded the bases with no outs for Jo Adell. On the second pitch of that showdown, catcher Edgar Quero fired to third and picked off Neto, with Josh Rojas applying the tag. Smith eventually struck out Adell, but Yoán Moncada walked to load the bases again. He then went to a full count against Logan O'Hoppe before getting the Angels catcher to ground out to third. Smith threw 35 pitches in the first, only 15 strikes, but somehow got out of it without allowing a run. The Sox received instant offense in the second with solo home runs by Andrew Benintendi and Lenyn Sosa on the way to a 6-3 victory in front of 29,937 at Angel Stadium. NEW YORK -- Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith hit a tiebreaking RBI single against his former team in the 10th inning leading the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Friday night. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Giants, who dealt relievers Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval, as well as outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, prior to Thursday's trade deadline. The Mets overcame a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings before losing their fourth straight game and falling out of first place in the National League East. New York is a half-game behind Philadelphia.
