What Led To Stampede At Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple
The Uttarakhand Police on Sunday said the preliminary investigation into the Mansa Devi stampede has indicated that the incident occurred due to panic triggered by rumours of electric current.
Seven devotees lost their lives in the stampede.
Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Parmendra Singh Dobal said, "Preliminary probe suggests that panic spread after rumours about electric current. People tried to move away, which resulted in jostling, and they fell over each other."
He said that around 9 am, the Police Control Room was contacted about the incident, after which police rushed to the temple.
The stampede occurred around the stairs of the temple.
A total of 35 people were rescued, Dobal said.
State Disaster Response Force and a fire team are at the spot for the relief and rescue operation.
Police are collecting forensic evidence, and the situation at the place of worship is normal now, he said.
Soon after the tragic incident, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the Mansa Devi stampede, saying it was extremely distressing news.
"Extremely distressing news has been received about a stampede breaking out at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar. Uttarakhand SDRF, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations," CM Dhami said in his post on X.
"I am in constant contact with the local administration regarding this matter, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to Mata Rani for the safety of all the devotees," he added.
Thousands of devotees thronged the sacred site during the ongoing holy month of Shravan.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos as people began pushing each other while waiting in queues, resulting in panic and a sudden rush.
Further details regarding the Haridwar incident are still awaited as authorities continue to assess the situation.
Every year, Haridwar sees a massive influx of pilgrims during the month of Shravan, especially at the revered Har Ki Pauri and Mansa Devi Temple.

A mentor named John Peter Hussain also conducted trading sessions with him,' SSP Bhullar said. 'Relevant data regarding bank accounts, WhatsApp communications, and mobile numbers were obtained through correspondence with banks, service providers, and Meta. The data analysis revealed the name of the accused behind the fraud. His email ID was operating from the Philippines, while his social media accounts were Dubai-based. Money from the victim's account was traced to further layers and withdrawn in Dubai,' SSP Bhullar added. A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged, and a team led by Sub-Inspector Rajesh Dhyani began investigating.

Delhi: Out on bail in rape case, man approaches survivor on bike, shoots her; arrested
A man, out on interim bail, was arrested in Delhi on Friday for allegedly attempting to murder the woman who had accused him of rape. The police said that Abuzair Safi (30) was arrested after he allegedly shot the woman in the chest while she was travelling in an autorickshaw on Wednesday. The woman, who works as a salon manager, had filed a rape complaint against Safi last year, following which he and his accomplice, Aman Sukhla, were arrested. Safi was granted interim bail by a court last month. The Police Control Room (PCR) received a call at 9.49 pm on Wednesday regarding a gunshot being heard. When a police team arrived at the spot, autorickshaw driver Ranjeet Yadav informed the officers that a female passenger had been shot and taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre by PCR personnel. 'The victim, found conscious and medically fit, stated that while she was travelling in the auto and speaking on the phone, two persons on a motorcycle approached from behind. One of them, Abuzair Safi, who was driving, fired a shot that struck her in the chest,' DCP (South West) Amit Goel said. Based on her statement, a case was registered under sections 109(1) (attempted murder) and 3(5) (common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and under the Arms Act. Gold nose ring snatched in city
Jaipur: Street robberies in Jaipur continue to rise, with another incident reported on Aug 1 in Jaysinghpura Khor police station area. Two bike-borne men allegedly snatched a woman's gold nose ring while pretending to ask for directions.
