Fall Out Boy icon steps away from band to 'avoid permanent damage' to hand
The Dance, Dance guitarist, 40, will take 'the rest of the year' off so he can undergo surgery to prevent further damage after playing through the pain.
Joe is a founding member of the pop-punk group, having been friends with Pete Wentz (bassist) in the 90s and has served as guitarist and backing vocalist since 2001.
Completing the lineup were Patrick Stump on vocals and Andy Hurley on drums, with the band best known for hits like Sugar, We're Goin Down, Thnks fr th Mmrs, and Centuries.
'After years of managing ongoing issues with my right hand, it's become clear that I need surgery to avoid permanent damage,' he announced in a statement on Instagram.
'Unfortunately, this means I'll have to take the rest of the year off from playing with the band,' he continued. 'The silver lining is that I'm on track for a full recovery.' https://www.instagram.com/p/DL0NrODO56K/
He didn't share any details about the issue specifically but confirmed that Fall Out Boy will continue to play their upcoming shows without him.
Fans sent well wishes in the comments, including from Simple Plan's Pierre Bouvier, who wrote: 'Wishing you a swift recovery and return to the band.'
The band are due to tour Japan and Brazil throughout August before heading back to the US for Oceans Calling Festival in Maryland in September.
They last toured the UK in 2023, performing in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, and London after the release of their So Much (For) Stardust album.
Joe took a temporary hiatus in January of that year, stating that he wanted to focus on his mental health at the time.
He explained at the time: 'Neil Young once howled that it's better to burn out than to fade away. But I can tell you unequivocally that burning out is dreadful.
'Without divulging all the details, I must disclose that my mental health has rapidly deteriorated over the past several years. So, to avoid fading away and never returning, I will be taking a break from work which regrettably includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell.
'It pains me to make this decision, especially when we are releasing a new album that fills me with great pride (the sin I'm most proud of).'
Ben Young took up the guitar while Joe was on a break but the founder returned to the fold before the tour was finished.
The former guitar tech has worked with the likes of Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots but also formed his own band, Knifes, in the late 2010s so it's unknown if he will return to Fall Out Boy in Joe's place.
Fall Out Boy have been staples of the pop-punk scene after dropping debut album Take This To Your Grave in 2003, which gained a cult following.
They quickly rose to prominence with their chart-topping second album From Under the Cork Tree, which spawned some of their biggest hits and earned their reputation for lengthy song titles.
Tracks like Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued and I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth (Summer Song) have become icons of the emo era.
Follow-up albums Infinity on High and Folie à Deux also saw commercial success but were followed by a short hiatus, due to the band members' declining mental health.
In 2013, Pete reached out to Patrick and mended the rift between them, with their comeback album Save Rock and Roll becoming an instant number one. More Trending
They have since released two further albums; Grammy-nominated Mania in 2018 and latest album So Much (For) Stardust in 2023.
Fall Out Boy also collaborated on Taylor Swift's re-recording of Speak Now, with a verse on (underappreciated) rock-pop vault track Electric Touch.
There are currently no public plans for a UK tour and no hints of a new album on the way and with Joe's hand it's looking like fans will have to wait a bit longer.
Maybe 2027 will see the return of FOB … just in time for Glastonbury.

Fresh Emmerdale horror in early ITVX release as Joe Tate is left wailing
The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Doctor Crowley's (James Hillier) revenge plan left Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) a broken man in tonight's Emmerdale. We first met the dodgy surgeon earlier this year, as part of Joe's plot to have an illegal kidney transplant. Joe paid Crowley to perform the operation, which saw him take Caleb Miligan's (William Ash) working organ and put it in Joe's body. He was paid and ordered to leave the village, but he returned this evening to put Joe in a position that left him terrified. The last we saw of Joe he had been knocked out by Shaun, his bodyguard. As he woke up, Joe found himself hooked up to some machines in a makeshift theatre room, and Doctor Crowley staring at him. The situation was simple – all Joe had to do was transfer £100k to Crowley and Shaun, and he could leave without a scratch on his body. If he didn't, Crowley was more than happy to use one of the scalpels he was cleaning while talking to Joe. Crowley gave Joe some time to ponder over the threat and left him alone in the room. In this period, Joe's anxiety increased and he found himself becoming more and more fearful. When Crowley and Shaun returned, there was a brief moment where it looked like the doctor was going to cut into Joe's skin, but he then gave in and revealed his bank details, so the duo could take his money. As a result of Crowley being smart and holding Joe hostage in a location that could not be traced, there was no possible way he could face the consequences for what he had done via prison. And even if Joe tried to get revenge himself, Crowley told him that he'd find him one day and do the exact same thing he had done today all over again. Joe, by this point, was a shell of the man he usually is – this message from Crowley got through to him loud and clear. Terminally ill NI groom still on a high after surprise helicopter ride on honeymoon
Charity links up with Castle Leslie estate to ensure couple who had to bring their wedding forward have unforgettable time A couple who brought their wedding forward due to the groom's terminal illness have enjoyed a dream honeymoon — complete with surprise helicopter ride. Joe Donaldson (57) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in August 2023. He was later given the all-clear, and met future wife Audrey last September through mutual friends. A whirlwind romance followed and Joe planned to propose at the top of the Empire State Building during a trip to New York in April, tickets for which he had surprised Audrey with at Christmas. But the holiday didn't happen, as Joe got the devastating news in March his cancer had returned, had now spread to his bones and was incurable. Instead, Joe proposed in April at scenic Castle Leslie in Co Monaghan. The original idea was to get married in April 2026, but he was told he might not live that long. The couple made the decision to bring the wedding forward and tied the knot at St Jude's Church in Antrim last week. Ahead of the big day, Audrey got in touch with the charity Dreams2Memories, which creates lasting memories for those living with terminal conditions. The charity, working with the team at Castle Leslie, organised a memorable four-night honeymoon at the country estate. During their luxury stay, Joe was treated to an extra surprise. For some time he had wished for a helicopter trip to be incorporated into the wedding. But he believed it wasn't feasible due to location issues. The happy groom told the Belfast Telegraph: 'Everybody else knew about the helicopter but me. 'I actually got a wee toy helicopter as a wedding present, so I thought that would be the height of it. 'Then we went down to the lake at Castle Leslie and I heard a helicopter in the distance. 'I looked over the lake and there was a helicopter rising above the trees, coming towards us. 'The penny dropped — and so did my jaw. It was amazing.' 'We're only staying in the best suite in the castle itself, the old bridal suite before the west wing was built" Audrey said: 'Joe turned to me and his words were: 'You're having a laugh'.' Joe said the conditions were perfect for their 25-minute flight, with clear skies and visibility for miles in every direction of the lush green countryside the area is famous for. He added: 'It was perfect. We had a tour of Monaghan, south Tyrone, and then we made our way back to Castle Leslie.' The couple said they were treated 'like royalty'. Audrey said: 'We were only staying in the best suite in the castle itself — the old bridal suite before the west wing was built. 'Mick Jagger even stayed there before, so we're in good company.' Joe agreed: 'Everything has just been amazing. 'I couldn't have dreamt of a better wedding and honeymoon.' Dreams2Memories was set up by Antrim woman Geraldine Magill, who lost her daughter Lisa to cancer in 2017 while the family were living in Australia. Before she passed, a charity called Dreams2Live4 organised a trip for the family to Broome in Western Australia to provide them with some respite from hospital appointments and the difficulties a terminal illness brings. Following Lisa's death, Geraldine and the family moved back to Antrim and set up the charity to help those with a terminal condition experience a bit of what Dreams2Live4 gave them.
