Hibs report and ratings from Dundee victory as Scotland striker stars
Two goals in three first-half minutes from Bowie, the former Fulham forward opening his account for the season in impressive style, put Gray's men in control after half an hour of relatively uneventful play. A Jack Iredale slip allowed Finaly Roberts to grab one back for the hosts just five minutes later.
But the visitors looked comfortable despite dipping energy levels. And they travel to Belgrade on Europa Conference League duty this week with confidence restored ahead of their third qualifying round clash with Partizan.
Roared on by a large travelling support, Hibs struggled to break down their dogged opponents in a fairly dire opening spell, in terms of entertainment. Always in control, they were finding it hard to break through the massed ranks of Dark Blue jerseys.
Bowie always looked the most likely, though. And he was rewarded for his bustling play with an opener after 27 minutes, pouncing quickly on a cross from the left that ricocheted off a defender – and spinning to finish smartly, low and hard into the far corner, with that mighty left boot.
Three minutes later, the big man had his second, courtesy of some brilliant build-up play involving Iredale, who slipped a killer pass through for the underlapping Jordan Obita. The wingback's shot was saved by Dundee goalie Jon McCracken – but Bowie again put himself in the right place at the right time to bury the rebound.
Just as Hibs supporters might have been beginning to dream of a big score, Dundee were gifted a lifeline, Iredale's loss of footing opening up a chance that Robertson did well to take. The visitors, to their credit, didn't have their rhythm disrupted too greatly by the loss of a goal.
And the introduction of both Jamie McGrath and Josh Campbell early in the second half lifted Hibs, the former's corner kick deliveries providing two good chances for the latter. McCracken was equal to the task on both occasions, however, stopping Campbell's point-blank header and then producing a leg save to divert the attacking midfielder's left-footed strike.
Dundee never really looked like bagging an equaliser. Hibs rarely looked troubled, despite losing a bit of zip in the legs. On to Belgrade.

Brendan Rodgers primed for Celtic's Champions League challenge after season-opening win
The champions needed a deflected strike from substitute Luke McCowan to edge past St Mirren with a 1-0 win as they started their Scottish Premiership title defence at Parkhead. Celtic earlier hit the frame of the goal through Benjamin Nygren, Reo Hatate and Adam Idah, and had a Callum McGregor strike disallowed for handball following a VAR intervention. But a strikeforce led by Idah inside Daizen Maeda and Yang Hyun-jun - with James Forrest and Johnny Kenny coming off the bench - looked in need of the reinforcements which Rodgers has been calling for. The Celtic manager was eager to praise his side's display and not labour that point, but fans will be keen to see new signings come in soon after Monday's Champions League play-off draw. The likes of Sturm Graz and Basel await Celtic as they discover their fate for the high-risk, high-reward games, which will take place in the final two weeks of this month. Rodgers said: 'We'll be ready for the games. Whenever they come, we'll be ready. The players are working very hard. 'They are always tense games. But we're in a good place and we'll take that game on when it comes. 'We've had a really, really good pre-season. The players are shaping up very well and are working very hard. There's real spirit and solidarity here in the team. So we look forward to that. 'We know whoever we get, it's going to be tough, but it will also be tough for them.' When asked whether their long wait for a goal against St Mirren underlined the need for more attacking options, Rodgers said: 'We created a lot. We got into a lot of really good areas and you have to give credit to the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper made some great saves. 'I think we were creative in the game, dominated the game. 'At times we moved the ball really well. At other times we could have attacked a wee bit more when we got into certain positions and been a bit more aggressive in the one-v-one moments. 'But overall, to play against that team, against that system, that's how you've got to work it and then you need a bit of quality to finish it. 'Sometimes you need a wee bit of good fortune as well. We didn't quite have that, some of them hit the post and the bar.' St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson saw plenty to encourage him. 'It was disappointing because we lost to a deflection,' he said. 'Defensively, I thought we were superb, very, very well organised. People use that as a slight against St Mirren sometimes, but that is one of the basics of management, get your team organised. 'We said we would have five or six opportunities to break and we did. Some we picked the right option, some we didn't. 'We didn't sit back the whole game, we pressed. I think we caused Celtic problems at times. 'But they have a heck of a lot of quality. If you look at the substitutes they are bringing on in comparison to ours, then it makes it a tough task.'

The capital side bounced back from Europa League heartbreak to get an opening day Premiership win David Gray praised his Hibs stars for shrugging off their European hangover and giving their fans an opening day Premiership win. The capital side could easily have felt sorry for themselves after they were knocked out of the Europa League in the last minutes of extra time to Midtjylland. Gray watched his players pick themselves up off the canvas to take three points thanks to a Kieron Bowie double at Dundee. It gives them the perfect shot in the arm ahead of their trip to Serbia to take on Partizan Belgrade in their Europa Conference League clash. Gray said: 'I'm delighted because like you just mentioned there, the emotional side to it as well. 'Everything that the players put in on Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game and wondering would there be a hangover? How will players react? 'First time they've learnt Thursday, Sunday. So I think all I can say is the players reacted in the best possible way. 'A real professional performance, started the game really well and I thought controlled the game from start to finish which is a real pleasing thing. 'The biggest thing is when the mentality has been asked, the questions asked about it, it was definitely there and the character of the players was definitely there to see today which is positive.' Bowie played his first full 90 minutes in two seasons. Gray is refusing to get carried away but believes his striker has all the tools to be a big success at Easter Road. Gray stated: 'I think that's the reason why he was brought to the football club, because of the qualities he's got. 'You've seen that, I've mentioned a lot about being suited to Scottish football as well. 'The physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game and he was always one that was going to benefit from a strong pre-season. 'We're getting that just now. 'One thing you've just said there about 90 minutes, so that's something we internally need to manage. 'We can't be putting everything in the one, pushing them too much. 'We need to manage that as much as we can as well. 'But that's why you've got strength and depth in the squad and competition for places. But right now he's benefiting from having a really good off-season. 'The confidence levels will be high, the Scottish recognition as well which is fantastic for him on a personal note. 'But he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season which is great.' Hibs got off to a winning start after waiting for five games for three points last season. He added: 'It was a big part of my motivation today. 'I heard a lot of people saying last season, imagine we had just a poor start, not a very poor start last season. 'So the mindset of the players is, here's the first opportunity to try and put that right.'

What he certainly isn't is the man to create a bit of history and lead the Dens Park side to a first home opening weekend top-flight victory since 1985. Such an achievement– Archie Knox was the last Dundee manager to do so – would have helped lift some of the pressure already bearing down on the 51-year-old. Instead, this defeat has simply intensified the spotlight on him although he seems admirably at ease with things. 'It's only natural,' he replied when someone posited afterwards that such a meek surrender to Hibs – the 2-1 defeat flattered the hosts – will simply reinforce people's views that Dundee are set for a long, hard season. In a way, it might have helped the manager in the long run given that there was very little sugar coating in evidence, on the pitch at least. 'This is Dens Park,' snazzy new flashing perimeter boards stressed with the stadium having shed its recent sponsorship appendages. And this is what happens when you replace good players with not such good ones and fire a manager out of the blue before recruiting one who's en route to a silver wedding anniversary trip to Vietnam. Pressley might become a very good manager for Dundee but he's not been given a chance as of yet. This performance doubled as an SOS message to managing director John Nelms, who was watching from the main stand. Pressley has already said that he's using the pundits who have identified Dundee as relegation certainties as motivation. If this is their response, it's very, very worrying indeed. Of course, some context is required. These are very early days in Pressley's reign and he was without talisman striker and skipper Simon Murray, sidelined due to a knee injury. Okay, history proves that opening weekend top-flight league wins at Dens are a rarity for Dundee. But it's not too much, their supporters will argue, to expect more than two shots on goal and 30 per cent ball possession. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs did not have to do much With half an hour on the clock here, Hibs had established a 2-0 lead without having to do very much at all, which given their European endeavours, was an ideal scenario for visiting manager David Gray. Although swashbuckling at times, Dundee's problem last season was keeping the ball out of their own net. It was one of the apparent factors in Tony Docherty's departure and part of the thinking why the Dens Park club turned to Pressley, a centre half of some repute for Hearts, among other teams. The planned solidity hasn't followed yet. A defensive calamity led to the opening goal after 28 minutes. Ryan Astley hit teammate Ethan Ingram with a clearance and the ball landed kindly for Kieron Bowie, who sent an angled shot into the corner past Jon McCracken. It got worse a couple of minutes later when Bowie swept home his second after Jordan Obita's shot was blocked by the 'keeper. Somehow Dundee got themselves back into the game four minutes later. Ashley Hay made the most of a mistake by defender Warren O'Hora, who seemed to stand on the ball. The Dundee striker cut back for Fin Robertson, who converted past the stranded Jordan Smith. Kieron Bowie scored twice for Hibs. | SNS Group A spirited Dundee comeback did not materialise. Pressley had been given the expected hot reception by Hibs fans as he walked out to take his seat in the home dugout several minutes before kick-off. This underlined why it's very easy to believe him when he says he is still five or six players short of what's required. Hibs, despite their lung-busting efforts of Thursday night against Midtjylland, set the pace of the game and all too easily contained a Dundee team who, sadly for their already despondent fans, lived down to expectations. It wasn't a classic, let's get that straight. The German stadium spotters sitting in front of the press box might have wished they had tweaked their itinerary somewhat or at least gone to the stadium across the road instead, where they could have spotted a stadium without spending 90 minutes they won't get back watching a game of football. Nevertheless, they were at least treated to three goals within eight opening half minutes. In Bowie, we had a player who at least caught the eye and did what good No.9s do by stamping his authority on a game where goalscoring chances were at a premium. Having bagged two early goals, one of the few points of interest was whether he might go on and help himself to an opening weekend hat-trick. He was given a rare 90 minutes to try. One shot just after the hour mark singed McCracken's hands. The Dundee 'keeper, preferred to Trevor Carson, had a good afternoon and made two fine stops from substitute Josh Campbell in the second half, as Hibs attempted to strike the killer goal – not that it was needed given Dundee's powderpuff attack.
