Bhasha Andolan From Tagore's Bolpur: Mamata hyphenates ‘SIR-linguistic terror', slams EC-BJP ‘bid to bring NRC through backdoor'

Indian Express5 days ago
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday hyphenated the issues of detention of Bangla-speaking migrants in several parts of the country with the Election Commission's plan to roll out the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across the country, including in poll-bound West Bengal, and accused the BJP and the EC of trying to implement the NRC in the country 'through the backdoor'.
Launching her party's Bhasha Andolan (language movement) campaign from Bolpur – the karmabhoomi of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore – the TMC supremo alleged that the BJP-led Centre, in collusion with the EC, was targeting minorities, OBCs, the poor, and Bengali-speaking voters through the Special Summary Revision, to strike off genuine names from the voter list in a 'covert' NRC-like exercise.
The chief minister, who took part in a 3-km march in Bolpur, holding a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, asserted that she would not allow the setting up of detention centres in West Bengal and dared the EC to delete names of genuine voters, saying such 'steps would attract consequences'.
'If you (EC) dare delete names from Bengal's voter list, you will witness Chhau dance, dhamsa-madol, conch shells, cymbals, and war drums. Have you heard such sounds before? We will make you hear them,' she said.
Accusing the EC of acting at the behest of the BJP government at the Centre, 'They (EC) are finalising the voters' list, while sitting in Gujarat. Gujaratis are not my enemies. The BJP's agency (EC) is doing this… They have already set up detention camps in Haryana and Assam. I will not allow NRC to be implemented in Bengal as long as I am alive. I won't allow detention camps to be built here… Have our Hindu brothers forgotten how 7 lakh names were removed in Assam? We want to say: 'Jo humse takrayega, choor choor ho jaayega' (Those who will collide with us will be shattered)'.
'The EC has come up with a new rule that the old list will no longer be used. Names must be re-entered from scratch. They are asking for the birth certificates of parents, too. Ask them if they themselves have their birth certificates. Those who are part of this conspiracy, do they have their documents in place?' she said.
'We will stop this conspiracy to jeopardise our existence in the name of linguistic terror and an attempt to implement NRC through the backdoor… The EC, with due respect, are you playing the government's NRC game?' she added.
The TMC supremo declared she would 'give up her life but not her language', and vowed to stand against attempts to erase Bengali 'asmita' (pride), disenfranchise the poor, or drive out migrants under the guise of electoral roll revision. 'We have no enmity with any language. I believe that unity in diversity is the foundation of our nation. But if you try to erase our language and culture, we will resist peacefully, powerfully, and politically,' she said.
In a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mamata said, 'When you travel to Arab nations and hug the sheikhs, do you ask whether they are Hindus or Muslims? Did you ask the Maldives President his religion before hugging him and donating Rs 5,000 crore, while depriving Bengal of its dues?'
Stating that Bengali is the fifth-most spoken language in the world and the second-most spoken in Asia, Banerjee questioned the ongoing discrimination.
'Yet, Bengalis are being tortured across states. Why this hatred? If Bengal can accept and shelter 1.5 crore migrant workers from other states, why can't you accept 22 lakh Bengali migrants working elsewhere?' she asked.
The Bolpur protest march was not just political; it was rich in emotion and symbolism.
Banerjee wore her trademark white cotton sari and a traditional uttariya from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. Raising slogans of 'Joy Bangla' and 'Jai Hind' at the end of her speech, Banerjee urged TMC workers to spread the language movement.

Show proof of 'vote chori': Rajnath Singh to Rahul Gandhi

PATNA/NEW DELHI: Defence minister on Saturday slammed Congress neta for claiming to have an "atom bomb of evidence of vote theft" against , and dared him to detonate the explosive. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At an event organised by a media house in Patna, Singh also likened the upcoming state polls to a crossroad, with one path (under ) leading to further progress and another (under the INDIA bloc) taking Bihar back to its old era of lawlessness and caste strife. "Rahul Gandhi says he is in possession of an atom bomb. If it is so, he should detonate it at once. He should just ensure that he is himself out of harm's way," Singh said. Gandhi had Friday said that his party has an "atom bomb" of evidence to prove "vote chori" by EC for BJP, remarks that evoked a sharp response from the poll panel. The commission termed Gandhi's remarks as "baseless and wild allegations". Singh also said the nation remembers his past rhetoric. "Rahul had threatened Parliament of an earthquake, but when he spoke, it turned out to be a damp squib." Singh said EC is an institution that enjoys a reputation for unquestionable integrity. "It is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the upcoming assembly polls in the state are held in a free and fair manner. It does not behove the leader of the opposition to make frivolous statements about a constitutional body," the BJP MP from Lucknow said. The defence minister reminded the LoP that his own party has blood on its hands, having tried to murder democracy in 1975 with the imposition of the Emergency. The defence minister also criticised the Congress-led opposition for raising questions about Operation Sindoor instead of paying tributes to the valour displayed by the Indian armed forces. The former BJP president alleged that the Congress had been soft on insurgency while in office, and tried to frame innocent people by spinning the theory of saffron terror because of vote bank considerations.

Lives at Risk in Bingidoddi: Residents Demand Action Over Dangling Power Lines and Official Negligence

Gadwal: Residents of Ward No. 12 in Bingidoddi village, Aija Mandal, Jogulamba Gadwal district, are living under a life-threatening situation due to the absence of proper electricity poles, resulting in dangerous electric wires hanging directly over residential homes. Locals, along with BJP Mandal President Gopalakrishna, raised serious concerns and demanded immediate intervention from the authorities. 'It has been over 25 years since this colony came into existence with over 200 houses, yet not a single concrete road or electricity pole has been installed,' said Gopalakrishna while addressing the villagers. Due to the lack of official infrastructure, residents are reportedly using wooden poles as makeshift electricity supports, a practice that has already led to shocks and close calls. In a recent incident, a homeowner had to personally replace a wire support after experiencing a shock from a low-hanging live wire. The colony, locals say, is completely neglected while sarpanches and officials have ensured road construction only around their own houses. In contrast, this area lacks even basic amenities like CC roads, proper drainage, or soil roads. 'If something happens to any of these families, who will take responsibility?' Gopalakrishna questioned. 'Despite informing the Assistant Engineer (AE) of the electricity department, no action has been taken so far.' He warned that if the situation is not rectified, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will organize a massive protest and dharna in the coming weeks. The event saw the participation of other community leaders like Anjaneyulu, Narasimhulu, and a large number of concerned villagers. What the Law Says: Legal Consequences for Government Negligence Endangering Public Life Legal experts have highlighted that negligence by government officials—especially when it threatens public safety—can lead to serious criminal and civil liabilities under Indian law, including the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in July 2024. Criminal Provisions: Section 106(1) BNS (formerly IPC 304A): If negligence causes death, the official may face up to 5 years of imprisonment, fine, or both. Section 123 BNS (formerly IPC 336-338): Any act endangering life or causing harm due to carelessness can result in 2 years' imprisonment or fine. Section 108 BNS (formerly IPC 166): If a public servant intentionally disobeys the law, they can be punished with up to 1 year imprisonment, fine, or both. Civil and Administrative Action: Negligent officers can also face: Departmental inquiries, suspension, or dismissal Loss of pension or seniority Civil lawsuits for damages Public Interest Litigations (PILs) filed by affected citizens or NGOs 'If a life is lost or seriously harmed due to an official's inaction, they could face both criminal prosecution and departmental removal,' said a senior retired IAS officer on condition of anonymity. What Citizens Can Do: Residents of Bingidoddi and similar villages can: File a formal complaint to the District Collector or Electricity Department Submit an RTI to trace accountability Approach the State Human Rights Commission or Lokayukta File a PIL in the High Court if officials continue to ignore their duty. Public Voice Growing Louder With the state government, led by the Congress party, promising people-centric development, locals expressed disappointment that these promises remain "only in words". The incident in Bingidoddi serves as a grim reminder of the gap between policy and implementation. As the public pressure mounts and legal frameworks back citizens' rights, authorities are now under intense scrutiny to take immediate corrective measures before a preventable tragedy occurs.

Not one claim from booth level agents of parties in 24 hours of poll roll publication

NEW DELHI: Not a single claim or objection was filed within the first 24 hours of publication of the draft electoral roll in Bihar, by any of the 1.6 lakh booth level agents (BLAs) deployed by a dozen political parties across the state's 90,712 booths. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, EC said 3,223 applications were received between 3pm on Aug 1 and 3pm on Aug 2, for fresh enrolment of electors turning 18 years on the cutoff dates July 1 and Oct 1, 2025. All have submitted their Form 6 with the mandatory declaration. As reported by TOI, EC, in an exercise aimed at 100% transparency, put out the first of its daily reports Saturday on the partywise claims and objections received from BLAs and resolved by the electoral registration officer or assistant ERO. As per rules, claims and objections are to be disposed of after the expiry of seven days. The update shared by the poll panel lists 'zero' claims and objections filed between 3pm on Aug 1 and 3pm on Aug 2, by the BLAs appointed by RJD, Congress, CPM, AAP, BSP, National People's Party, BJP, JD(U), CPI (ML) (Liberation), LJP (Ram Vilas), Rashtriya LJP and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party. The district election officers of all of Bihar's 38 districts had Friday shared the draft electoral roll for all 90,712 polling booths with the political parties. It also provided them the list of electors who were there in the roll as on June 24, 2025, but are not in the draft electoral roll published Friday. The absence of any claim or objection from RJD, which has 47,506 BLAs in the field, is interesting given that Saturday started with party chief claiming his name was not in the roll. The claim turned out to be incorrect as a copy of the draft roll for the relevant booth in Digha assembly constituency lists not only Tejashwi as entry no. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 416, but also his wife Rajshree as entry no. 445. Tejashwi had earlier, while objecting to the non-inclusion of Aadhaar in list of documentation accepted under SIR, voiced the fear that his wife, who only has Aadhaar, may not be on the roll. EC on Saturday said it is not able to understand why Tejashwi is making such baseless allegations. As regards his fears regarding large-scale deletions, the poll panel said he should ask his 47,506 BLAs to file claims and objections, for which they have an entire month from Aug 1 to Sept 1. "No BLA of any political party has submitted a single case to BLOs during the last 24 hours. This, despite all BLAs having agreed to go through the boothwise draft lists given to them on August 1, carefully," said the commission. EC is meanwhile issuing advertisements in print, TV and social media to create awareness among the electors of Bihar regarding the option of filing claims and objections. It will also set up special camps in all block-cum-office circles and urban local body offices, from 10am to 5pm on all days till Sept 1. Any elector of Bihar can check his name in the draft electoral roll by filling his EPIC number directly on the EC voters' portal and can also file claims and objections.
