Michael Douglas ‘no real intentions' of going back to acting

Leader Live2 days ago
The 80-year old actor and producer was speaking during a press conference at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic for the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, which he co-produced.
Douglas most recently starred as Benjamin Franklin in the Apple TV+ series Franklin in 2022 and said that unless something 'special' came along, it was time for him 'to stop'.
The actor, who is married to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones, also spoke about how 'lucky' he was to have made a recovery from stage four cancer after undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment and avoiding surgery that would have impacted his speech and removed parts of his jaw.
He said: 'I've had a very busy career. I have not worked since 2022, purposefully, because I realised I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.
'I'm very happy with taking the time off. I have no real intentions of going back.
'I say I'm not retired, because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, I'm quite happy. Just like to watch my wife work.'
Douglas co-produced the film adaptation to Ken Kesey's novel, which explores themes of power and resistance as a rebellious convict arrives at a psychiatric hospital in 1963 where he encourages his fellow patients to take control of their lives and defy the tyrannical head nurse.
Starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, the film was nominated for nine Oscars and took home five including the 1975 award for best picture.
When asked about the parallels between the film and current political environment in the US, Douglas said: 'I think our president's name has been mentioned enough in the short time that he's been president.
'And I look at it generally as the fact of how precious, how precious democracy is, how vulnerable it is, and how it always has to be protected, and we have to be reminded.
'Right now, our country is flirting with autocracy as some other democracies in this world.
'Democracy is not to be taken for granted, and I think it reminds us that we all need to make our efforts. It's not the job of somebody else.
'And of course, the disappointing thing is, politics now seem to be for profit.
'I myself am worried, I'm nervous, and I just think it's all of our responsibilities, not for somebody else to look out for us, but for us to each look out for ourselves.'

Ex-Tory chairman Jake Berry announces defection to Reform UK

Sir Jake Berry, former Conservative chairman under Liz Truss, is the latest to jump ship to Reform in the latest blow to the Tories, making him the second ex-Cabinet minister to do so within a week. Writing in an op-ed in The Sun, Berry claimed the 'only way' to have a 'country we can be proud of again' is through a Reform government. He wrote: 'If you were deliberately trying to wreck the country, you'd be hard-pressed to do a better job than the last two decades of Labour and Tory rule. 'Fighting for the Britain I want my kids, and one day, my grandkids, to grow up in. 'Not a Britain in decline, but a Britain that believes in itself again. 'Old Westminster politics has failed. But there's a better way. Millions of people, just like me, want a country they can be proud of again. 'The only way we get that is with Reform in government. 'That's why I've resigned from the Conservative Party. I'm now backing Reform UK and working to make them the next party of government. 'Why? Because I've always believed that change comes with challenging the old order. In shaking up the system when it isn't working.' Berry is the second former Cabinet minister in a week to join Reform after ex-Welsh secretary David Jones recently announced he had enrolled as a member. Other former Conservatives who have joined Reform include Marco Longhi, Anne Marie Morris, Ross Thomson, Aiden Burley, and Andrea Jenkyns, now the mayor of Greater Lincolnshire. The former MP for Rossendale and Darwen lost his seat in the 2024 general election to Labour's Andy MacNae, who secured a majority of 6,000. Since losing his seat, Berry has moved into broadcasting, hosting a show on right-wing news channel Talk TV. Before serving in Liz Truss's government, he held ministerial roles under both Boris Johnson and Theresa May. In a video published alongside his op-ed, Berry claimed that "Britain is broken", saying: 'I know who broke it because I was there.' He continued: 'For 30 years I supported the Conservative Party, for 14 years I was one of their MPs, sitting at that Cabinet table twice. 'I want to tell you today my friends that I have come to a decision. The old parties do not have what it takes to transform our country, to build a Britain we can believe in again, and that's why I've decided to join the Reform Party.'

Heartstopper's Joe Locke ‘thrilled' to make West End debut in Clarkston

The 21-year-old will appear in the play, written by Samuel D Hunter, alongside The Franchise actor Ruaridh Mollica and Welsh actress Sophie Melville when it launches this Autumn. Locke said: 'I'm thrilled to be making my West End debut in Clarkston. Samuel D Hunter's writing is so deeply human and honest that I immediately connected with the play when I read it.' A post shared by Clarkston (@clarkstonplay) Clarkston, directed by Jack Serio, tells the story of Jake, who is on a journey to discover himself when he unexpectedly meets Chris, a kindred soul working a night shift at a Costco in a rural American town. As the pair's bond deepens, so does their sense of adventure. Writer Hunter said of the play: 'I couldn't be more excited to bring Clarkston to London audiences, especially with this phenomenal cast and creative team. 'I've always adored the UK's theatre scene, so being able to share this play with audiences in the West End is truly a dream come true. 'This play draws from themes of the vast and isolated American West and the colonial past of the United States, but it's fundamentally a story about love and friendship in the midst of an unknown future, which is a prettyuniversal story these days.' Locke starred in all three seasons of Netflix's teen drama Heartstopper as Charlie Spring, a gay teen boy who falls in love with his classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). The Manx star was nominated for outstanding lead performance at the Children's And Family Emmy Awards in 2022 for his role in the show. The actor has also appeared in Marvel's Agatha All Along miniseries and made his Broadway debut last year in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. Further details, including ticket sale dates, are yet to be announced.
