Major car brand warns thousands will lose jobs with EV demand 'hitting hard'

One of the most famous luxury performance car makers in the world has warned it will make a wave of redundancies across its business after being 'hit hard' by falling electric vehicle sales.
In a letter to workers seen by Bloomberg, its CEO warned that a new package of cost cuts is coming, in addition to the current plans to reduce its workforce by a tenth by 2029.
As well as cutting 1,900 jobs in Germany by the end of the decade, Porsche will start negotiations with IG Metall trade union on additional reductions in costs in the second half of this year, with the aim to bolster profitability in the coming years.
In the note to employees, CEO Oliver Blume cautioned that the German marque's business model, that was once the envy of the industry due to its leading profit margins, 'no longer works in its current form'.
He blamed the global EV sales slumps, the introduction of Trump tariffs - which in recent days have been renegotiated with the EU - and plunging demand in China.
Porsche has already scaled back its original projection to reach an 80 per cent share of EV sales by 2030 in a change in places announced this time last year.
A Porsche spokesperson told This is Money: 'Our company is currently navigating significant global challenges.
'The fact that we are able to report the figures that we are reporting at the moment is largely thanks to the substantial investments we have made in previous years.
'We have introduced a new and strong product portfolio.'
Blume told his employees in Germany that 'business conditions have deteriorated massively within a short period of time'.
Porsche's global sales declined by three per cent in 2024, with profit margins now forecast for between 10 and 12 this year, below the long-term target of 20 per cent.
By the end of 2025, Porsche will lose the final current-generation Boxster and Cayman, with electric replacements not arriving before 2026.
The new Macan EV crossover has seen a strong start to sales, with 60 per cent of sales of the Macan in the first half of the year being electric. Globally Macan sales have improved overall by 15 per cent.
However, the Taycan - Porsche's first electric model - saw a 49 per cent decline in sales in 2024 and dropped another six per cent in the first half of 2025.
A string of recalls for the flagship EV hasn't helped Porsche's cause.
The German brand will therefore be hoping that the Cayenne EV will inject new sales.
Any slowdown of EV sales hurts the investments already made into models like the Macan.
'On the one hand we need EVs to fulfil regional CO2 regulations,' Blume wrote, 'but on the other the profit margins are far below those of our combustion engine cars'.
Porsche is also battling issues in the Chinese market, particularly with price wars for EVs.
The Stuttgart brand saw an overall sales decline in China of 28 per cent year-on-year, which was attributed to 'the continuing challenging economic situation in this region'. It marks the lowest sales level for Porsche in the region for 11 years.
North America is also causing the luxury car maker issues, despite being its largest market with price hikes eating into potential growth there.
Demand is strong but the combination of tariffs, which have just been confirmed at 15 per cent for European models, and a sharp decline in the US dollar versus the Euro has left Porsche 'under enormous financial pressure' there 'despite a delivery record in the first year,' according to Blume.
The perfect storm of all three has seen one of the world's most valuable car makers lose 29 per cent of its share price so far this year.
'All of this is hitting us hard — harder than many other car manufacturers,' Blume said.
As a result the job losses announced for 2029 will see employees encouraged to take voluntary leave by accepting early retirement or severance packages, and Porsche will take a 'restrictive approach' to hiring.
Porsche commented: 'We have revised our product strategy to reflect the evolving demands of global markets and the slower-than-expected ramp-up of electromobility.
'Our portfolio is now more flexible and features compelling new models for the years ahead.
'We are investing heavily. Our cars are and will remain the beating heart of our company.
'Given the altered external conditions, we must redevelop our business model to be more flexible, regionally attuned and responsive.
'At the same time, we are building on our proven strengths.'

Ursula von der Leyen's Turnberry golf course deal has been rightly called a capitulation and a humiliation for Europe. Assuming such an accord would put an end to Donald Trump's coercion and bullying was either naive or the result of a miserable delusion. The EU should now steel itself and reject the terms imposed by Trump. Is this deal really as bad as it sounds? Unfortunately, it is, for at least three reasons. The blow to Europe's international credibility is incalculable in a world that expects the EU to stand up for reciprocity and rules-based trade, to resist Washington's coercion as Canada, China and Brazil have, rather than condoning it. Economically, it's a damaging one-way street: EU exporters lose market access in the US while the EU market is hit by more favoured US competition. Core European industrial sectors such as pharma and steel and aluminium are left by the wayside. The balance also tilts in the US's favour in important sectors such as consumer goods, food and drink, and agriculture. Tariffs tend to stick, so this is long-term damage. The EU even gives up its right to respond to future US pressures through duties on digital services or network fees. To top it off, von der Leyen's defence and investment pledges (for which she had no mandate) go against Europe's interest. The EU's competitiveness predicament is precisely one of net investment outflows. As international capital now reallocates under the pressures of Trumponomics and a weakening dollar, the case for Europe to become a strategic investment power was strengthening. Von der Leyen's promise of $600bn in EU investment in the US is therefore disastrous messaging. How could this happen? All EU member states wanted to avoid Trump's 30% tariff threat and a trade war, but none perhaps as much as Germany and Ireland, supported by German carmakers and US big tech firms. Yet Irish sweetheart digital tax deals, as well as BMW and Mercedes's plans to move production hubs to the US (also to serve the EU market), cannot be Europe's future. EU governments were distinctly unhelpful in building the EU's negotiating position. But in the end, it was von der Leyen who blinked and she has to take responsibility. Her close team took control in the closing weeks and went into the final meeting manifestly prepared only to say yes, which made Trump's steamrolling inevitable. Let's think of the counterfactual: if von der Leyen had stepped into the room and rejected these terms, Trump's wrath and some market turmoil may have ensued. But ultimately it would very likely have come to a postponement, a new negotiation and, at some point, a different deal that would not be so lopsided or unilaterally trade away deep and long-term European interests and principles. Instead, von der Leyen became a supplicant to a triumphant Trump. The situation is reminiscent of the final rounds of the Brexit negotiations five years ago when von der Leyen similarly was giving in to unacceptable demands from Boris Johnson, only to U-turn under pressure from a steelier EU chief negotiator and a quartet of member states. Today, von der Leyen runs Brussels with a strong presidential hand and has largely done away with internal checks and balances inside the commission. That is her prerogative and her style, but the upshot should not be weak, ineffective and unprincipled dealings on Europe's major geopolitical challenges, from Trump to Gaza. The 'deal' in Scotland is in reality an unstable interim accord. Nothing is yet inked or signed; Washington and Brussels are already locking horns on its interpretation and negotiations on the finer (and broader) points are ongoing. The 27 EU governments will inevitably get involved as the final deal needs to be translated into an international agreement and EU law. Some big powers – Germany and Italy seemingly – are on board, reluctant or not. However, internal political dynamics may change their calculations. Opposition parties and rightwing contenders who are a real political threat to leaders in Germany and France are already lambasting the deal. Unless von der Leyen strikes a dirty bargain with the member states, the European parliament will also have a say. The longtime chair of its trade committee, Bernd Lange, has set the tone for how the deal would be viewed there, calling it 'asymmetry set in stone' and even 'a misery'. As details seep out on what von der Leyen has really agreed toand what the US expects from the EU, and all the consequences become clear, an already unpalatable deal may become even more so. Weakening US economic data and returning stock market jitters show that Trump's negotiation footing is fragile. His new tariff threats come with new extensions, up to 90 days in the case of Mexico, as his position is overstretched. For Europe, the lesson from the Brexit negotiations – one that von der Leyen ought to have grasped before now – is that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. There is now an opportunity for EU governments and the European parliament to course correct and salvage something from this train wreck. Some of the world's leading tech companies are betting big on very small innovations. Last week, Samsung released its Galaxy Z Fold 7 which - when open - has a thickness of just 4.2mm, one of the slimmest folding phones ever to hit the market. And Honor, a spin-off from Chinese smartphone company Huawei, will soon ship its latest foldable - the slimmest in the world. Its new Honor Magic V5 model is only 8.8mm thick when folded, and a mere 4.1mm when open. Apple is also expected to release a foldable in the second half of next year, according to a note by analysts at JPMorgan published this week. The race to miniaturise technology is speeding up, the ultimate prize being the next evolution in consumer devices. Whether it be wearable devices, such as smartglasses, watches, rings or foldables - there is enormous market potential for any manufacturer that can make its products small enough. Despite being thinner than its predecessor, Honor claims its Magic V5 also offers significant improvements to battery life, processing power, and camera capabilities. Hope Cao, a product expert at Honor told Sky News the progress was "due largely to our silicon carbon battery technology". These batteries are a next-generation breakthrough that offers higher energy density compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, and are becoming more common in consumer devices. Honor also told Sky News it had used its own AI model "to precisely test and find the optimum design, which was both the slimmest, as well as, the most durable." However, research and development into miniaturisation goes well beyond just folding phones. A company that's been at the forefront of developing augmented reality (AR) glasses, Xreal, was one of the first to release a viable pair to the consumer market. Xreal's Ralph Jodice told Sky News "one of our biggest engineering challenges is shrinking powerful augmented reality technology into a form factor that looks and feels like everyday sunglasses". Xreal's specs can display images on the lenses like something out of a sci-fi movie - allowing the wearer to connect most USB-C compatible devices such as phones, laptops and handheld consoles to an IMAX-sized screen anywhere they go. Experts at The Metaverse Society suggest prices of these wearable devices could be lowered by shifting the burden of computing from the headset to a mobile phone or computer, whose battery and processor would power the glasses via a cable. However, despite the daunting challenge, companies are doubling down on research and making leaps in the area. Social media giant Meta is also vying for dominance in the miniature market. Meta's Ray-Ban sunglasses (to which they recently added an Oakley range), cannot project images on the lenses like the pair from Xreal - instead they can capture photos, footage and sound. When connected to a smartphone they can even use your phone's 5G connection to ask Meta's AI what you're looking at, and ask how to save a particular type of houseplant for example. Gareth Sutcliffe, a tech and media analyst at Enders Analysis, tells Sky News wearables "are a green field opportunity for Meta and Google" to capture a market of "hundreds of millions of users if these devices sell at similar rates to mobile phones". Li-Chen Miller, Meta's vice president of product and wearables, recently said: "You'd be hard-pressed to find a more interesting engineering problem in the company than the one that's at the intersection of these two dynamics, building glasses [with onboard technology] that people are comfortable wearing on their faces for extended periods of time ... and willing to wear them around friends, family, and others nearby." Mr Sutcliffe points out that "Meta's R&D spend on wearables looks extraordinary in the context of limited sales now, but should the category explode in popularity, it will be seen as a great strategic bet." Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's long-term aim is to combine the abilities of both Xreal and the Ray-Bans into a fully functioning pair of smartglasses, capable of capturing content, as well as display graphics onscreen. However, despite recently showcasing a prototype model, the company was at pains to point out that it was still far from ready for the consumer market. This race is a marathon not a sprint - or as Sutcliffe tells Sky News "a decade-long slog" - but 17 years after the release of the first iPhone, people are beginning to wonder what will replace it - and it could well be a pair of glasses.
