"We want women to have trust in police": DIG Shridhar Patil on 'BHAROSA' initiative in Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban
Speaking to ANI, DIG Patil explained that the program includes specially trained female officers posted at every police station to provide support and counselling, especially for victims of harassment and adolescents facing mental health challenges.
'The government is sensitive regarding women's security. The Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban area is very remote, and women here are reluctant to come forward with their complaints. To resolve this, we took an initiative and named it 'Bharosa' because we want women to have trust and confidence in the police...' he said.
'We trained a special segment of female police officers to address women in this area... We want women to act as a symbol of confidence for women around them. If they face any harassment at home or in the workplace, women must approach their nearest police station or dial the police helpline. A woman officer is posted in each police station... A lot of adolescents step towards committing suicide, but they must instead reach out to the nearest officer; they will be provided with counselling,' he added.
Police Sub-Inspector Tania Sharma highlighted that the Jammu and Kashmir Police's 'BHAROSA' initiative is also focused on educating women about their legal rights and breaking the stigma that visiting a police station is harmful.
'This initiative has been by DIG DKR range... Women must be aware of the criminal laws and how BNS and other laws sensitise their voice... Women have a myth that it will not be good if they go to the police station, and we must break this myth... A lot of things have been launched by the government, like the government and the National Commission for Women,' Sharma said.
In a landmark move to strengthen women's safety and public confidence in policing, the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched the BHAROSA initiative in the DKR Range on Wednesday, under DIG Shridhar Patil. The comprehensive programme is aimed at addressing the under-reporting of crimes and enhancing awareness of women's rights, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
According to an official release, a three-day capacity-building programme was held in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, which trained 95 women police personnel in gender sensitisation, effective complaint handling, and community engagement strategies.
As part of its extensive outreach efforts, 94 awareness programmes have been conducted, benefiting over 4,400 individuals, said the release.
The release highlighted that response mechanisms have been strengthened through the 24x7 Women Helpline (112), the JK Police eCOP app, and rapid response teams.
On the empowerment front, more than 4,700 people have benefited from cyber awareness and legal aid initiatives. In a significant step, police officials are also reaching remote areas to educate people, especially women, about their legal rights, delivering awareness directly at their doorsteps, added the release.
The initiative has led to a notable increase in crime reporting, improved public trust in police services, and the adoption of advanced technology, including AI-powered surveillance and GPS-enabled patrols.
It has also ushered in critical reforms, including digitised FIR systems, an e-FIR facility, SOPs for crimes against women, and the enforcement of the POSH Act, which have further added. (ANI)

JDU Attacks The Nitish Kumar-led JDU responded to Paswan's criticism and said that those questioning the Bihar law and order situation should first make sure that people of criminal nature do not get an entry in their party. 'Incidents have happened anywhere, even in Bihar. But undoubtedly, compared to other states, the law system in Bihar is better. We believe that the police in Bihar should be responsible for arresting the criminals, identifying the incidents, and how the people who are responsible should be punished severely. This is how the policy works," the JDU leader said. He further said that a total of 100 fast track courts are being set up in Bihar. He assured that the criminals in Bihar will not be spared. Crime Surge In Bihar Recently, heinous crime incidents like murders, rapes and gang rapes happened here in Bihar, especially in Patna. On Friday, a female candidate of the Home Guard was gang raped by two men in an ambulance in Gaya. In the last 30 days, a dreaded gangster, Chandan Mishra, was gunned down by five armed men inside the high-profile Paras Hospital in Patna. Famous industrialist Gopal Khemka was gunned down outside his residence in Patna, a sand trader Ramakant Yadav was murdered in Dulhin Bazar, Patna, a grocery trader Vikram Jha was killed in Patna and many other incidents. Paswan's Equation With Nitish The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is a junior NDA partner in the state. Paswan has also intensified his attacks on Nitish Kumar after declaring that his party will contest all 243 seats in Bihar. " Taking a dig at the BJP-led central government, Owaisi alleged it was acting 'strong with the weak" by going after the country's poorest communities. Taking to social media platform X, Owaisi claimed that those being labelled as illegal immigrants were repeatedly targeted because they lacked the means to challenge police atrocities. 'There have been disturbing reports of Indian citizens being pushed into Bangladesh at gunpoint,' said Owaisi in his post. "Police in different parts of India have been illegally detaining Bengali-speaking Muslim citizens and accusing them of being Bangladeshi. "Police do not have the power to detain people just because they speak a particular language. These wide-net detentions are illegal," said Owaisi. The AIMIM chief's statement came days after the Pune city police arrested five Bangladeshi women from the Budhwar Peth red-light area. Acting on a specific tip-off, officers from Faraskhana Police Station and the anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) carried out a raid, reported ANI. The women, aged between 20 and 28, were found residing in India without valid documents and using fake identity cards. Investigations revealed that they had illegally entered India from Bangladesh, posed as West Bengal residents, and were allegedly involved in prostitution in Pune. The operation also exposed a human trafficking network that facilitated their illegal entry and stay in the country. Cases have been filed under the Immigration Act, Passport Act, and relevant provisions of human trafficking laws. Meanwhile, in Assam, the BJP-led state government is continuing its eviction drive against what it calls illegal encroachments on tribal land. State minister Atul Bora voiced full support for the initiative, saying it was essential to protect tribal belts from "doubtful people." The Assam BJP on Tuesday reiterated that eviction drives will continue until all illegally occupied land is cleared, cited ANI.

Ambulance driver found dead in Kumaradhara River
Representative image MANGALURU: An ambulance driver who was reported missing was found dead in the Kumaradhara River on Friday. The deceased is Honnappa Gowda. In a complaint, Keshava, residing in Kadaba taluk, said that his elder brother, Honnappa Gowda, was living with his family in Devaragadde, Subrahmanya village, for the past 20 years and was working as a driver for the ambulance at the Subrahmanya Primary Health Centre. On July 22, as usual, Honnappa left home around 9 am for duty. He went to the hospital but reportedly applied for leave and left the hospital premises. However, even by the afternoon, he did not return home. Concerned, Honnappa's wife filed a missing person complaint at the Subrahmanya Police Station. It was later learnt that Honnappa went towards the banks of the Kumaradhara River. A search operation was launched involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), expert swimmer Eshwar Malpe, and local villagers. During this search, a dead body was found in the waters of the Kumaradhara River at Parvatamukhi in Subrahmanya village on Friday. The family identified the body as that of Honnappa Gowda. Accordingly, the Subrahmanya Police Station registered a case under Section 194 of BNS.
