Union Minister Chirag Paswan criticised Bihar CM Nitish Kumar over rising crime, expressing shame in supporting the government, stirring the ruling alliance before elections.
Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Saturday lashed out his ally Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state saying that he feels 'sad and ashamed to support" the government under the current situation.
With elections in Bihar looming later this year, Chirag's blunt criticism has caused ripples within the ruling alliance.
While speaking to the reporters in Patna, the Union Minister expressed anguish and accused its ally government of failing to curtail the rising crime rate.
'I feel sad that I am supporting such a government here. It is imperative to control it, or else the consequences will be very bad," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Paswan further accused the Nitish Kumar administration of bowing before criminals.
'The way murders, kidnappings, looting, robbery, rapes have taken place one after the other in Bihar and now it seems that the administration has totally bowed down in front of the criminals," he added.
With assembly elections approaching, Paswan acknowledged the possibility of crimes being orchestrated to defame the government. However, he emphasised that it is still the administration's responsibility to maintain law and order.
'I have heard claims that the recent spurt in violent crimes is linked to the upcoming assembly polls, and there are attempts to defame this government. Still, it is the responsibility of the administration to keep law and order under control," he added.
He further attacked the government and said, 'Either the administration is in collusion with it or the administration has become completely useless and now it is beyond their power to keep Bihar and Biharis safe."
Urging immediate action, Paswan appealed to the state government, 'I request the Bihar government to act before it's too late."
Jitan Ram Manjhi Steps In
Following Paswan's repeated attacks on Nitish Kumar over the law and order situation in the wake of a series of murders in the state, Union Minister and NDA ally Jitan Ram Manjhi
'We are in NDA. We have to help NDA. We wish him all the best. He should strengthen the NDA. If he does not adopt the 2020 policy, it will be a very good thing. Because today NDA has become necessary for the society and the country. Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar are doing all kinds of development. If someone opposes NDA, then I think he does not have good feelings towards the people of the state and the country and if work is being done to strengthen it, then we will appreciate it…" he said as quoted by news agency ANI.
JDU Attacks
The Nitish Kumar-led JDU responded to Paswan's criticism and said that those questioning the Bihar law and order situation should first make sure that people of criminal nature do not get an entry in their party.
'Incidents have happened anywhere, even in Bihar. But undoubtedly, compared to other states, the law system in Bihar is better. We believe that the police in Bihar should be responsible for arresting the criminals, identifying the incidents, and how the people who are responsible should be punished severely. This is how the policy works," the JDU leader said.
He further said that a total of 100 fast track courts are being set up in Bihar. He assured that the criminals in Bihar will not be spared.
Crime Surge In Bihar
Recently, heinous crime incidents like murders, rapes and gang rapes happened here in Bihar, especially in Patna.
On Friday, a female candidate of the Home Guard was gang raped by two men in an ambulance in Gaya. In the last 30 days, a dreaded gangster, Chandan Mishra, was gunned down by five armed men inside the high-profile Paras Hospital in Patna.
Famous industrialist Gopal Khemka was gunned down outside his residence in Patna, a sand trader Ramakant Yadav was murdered in Dulhin Bazar, Patna, a grocery trader Vikram Jha was killed in Patna and many other incidents.
Paswan's Equation With Nitish
The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is a junior NDA partner in the state.
Paswan has also intensified his attacks on Nitish Kumar after declaring that his party will contest all 243 seats in Bihar. The 42-year-old Union Minister announced that he would also contest the upcoming assembly polls.
'I want to take Bihar to new heights. I visualise a future in which our boys and girls will not need to go outside in search of greener pastures; rather, people from other states will come here in search of better education and employment opportunities," said Paswan at a rally in Saran district on July 6.

CM warns against ‘Swiggy politics', calls for return to ideological values

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday expressed deep concern over what he termed as the rise of 'Swiggy politics' — a system driven by instant delivery of political gains at the cost of ideology, democratic principles, and grassroots party workers. Speaking at the S Jaipal Reddy Democratic Award presentation ceremony, the CM said, "Swiggy politics is replacing ideology-based politics. Political parties are increasingly focused on who can deliver quick results, sidelining core values. This is a dangerous trend for Indian democracy." He lamented the growing role of political managers and event management agencies in the electoral process, saying they are replacing committed party activists. "Politics devoid of ideology and dedicated workers is a serious threat to the nation's democratic fabric," he said. "Since I assumed office, no opposition MLA has been suspended. The dharna chowk at Indira Park has been reopened for all citizens to protest and raise their voices," he said. Paying tribute to the late Union minister Jaipal Reddy, Revanth described him as one of the most principled parliamentarians. "Though he wasn't initially in favour of Telangana, he played a crucial role in making statehood a reality. His intervention in the Union cabinet and support from leaders like Sushma Swaraj ensured the passage of the AP Reorganisation Bill." Revanth added that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi once told him she was moved to support Telangana statehood due to Jaipal Reddy's compelling advocacy.

Forest clearance delay stalls Belagavi Ring Road project

Belagavi: The ambitious Belagavi Ring Road project, aimed at decongesting city traffic, has hit a major roadblock due to the delay in securing forest clearance. The project remains stalled as state forest officials failed to respond to queries raised by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change. The Centre approved the project in three phases, allocating Rs 1,622 crore for the construction of a 34.5-kilometre ring road in the first phase. Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone in Feb 2024, calling it a key infrastructure upgrade for Belagavi. The proposed road cuts through 27.3 hectares of reserve forest in the villages of Honaga, Kakati, Sonatti, Kanabargi, and Kalakhamb. Belagavi deputy conservator of forests (DCF) Maria Christu Raja D submitted his inspection report in Aug 2024, and based on his report, the state forest department recommended the diversion of forest land to the Centre in Jan 2025. However, questions have now been raised over the accuracy and completeness of the report submitted by the DCF. Bengaluru-based environmental activist Ramprasad flagged potential discrepancies, citing satellite images that allegedly show encroachment on portions of the forest land recommended for diversion, which were not mentioned in the DCF's report. Following the activist's complaint, the central forest department asked the state govt to submit a factual report by June 10, a deadline that has since lapsed without compliance. The failure to provide a factual report is now the primary reason for the delay in greenlighting the Ring Road Project. DCF Maria Christu Raja D declined to comment on the matter. Meanwhile, Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil, a strong advocate for the project, expressed his frustration over the delay. "We worked hard to get this major project sanctioned by the Centre, but the inefficiency of local forest officials is stalling it. If the DCF fails to submit the required factual report within 15 days, I will protest in front of his office," he warned.
