SOLO (INDONESIA): Rising shuttlers Tanvi Sharma and Vennala Kalagotla signed off with bronze medals as India ended their impressive campaign at the
Badminton
Asia Junior Individual Championships on Saturday.
It was a historic first for India, with two women's singles shuttlers finishing on the podium in the same edition of the event.
Vennala fought valiantly against China's Liu Si Ya before going down 15-21 18-21 in 37 minutes.
Down 15-20 in the second game, the young Indian saved three match points to raise hopes of a comeback, but a late error at crucial time allowed Liu to seal the contest in straight games.
On the other court, second seed Tanvi Sharma lost 13-21 14-21 to eighth seed Yin Yi Qing of China in 35 minutes.
After dropping the opening game, Tanvi staged a spirited fightback in the second, racing to a 6-1 lead. However, Yin clawed her way back to level at 8-8 before pulling ahead to secure the win.
For Tanvi, it was yet another impressive performance, having finished runner-up at the US Open Super 300 tournament last month.

The Indian men's football team will have a new head coach when the All India Football Federation (AIFF) executive committee meets virtually on Friday. Following the departure of Manolo Marquez, the AIFF had invited applications for the position. The governing body of Indian football in the country shortlisted Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic among the 170 names submitted. Jamil is currently coaching Jamshedpur FC in the ongoing Durand Cup while Constantine is a former India head coach. Tarkovic, who had been a national team coach, has no links with Indian football. However, among the three, Jamil looks to be the frontrunner for the top job. A former player, Tarkovic has been at helm for his native Slovakia and Kyrgyzstan - a criteria that will be given preference according to the AIFF advertisement. However, Tarkovic lack of knowledge about Indian football puts him out of contention for the job. Tarkovic's last assignment was with Kyrgyzstan that ended in June 2024. Why Stephen Constantine is unlikely to get third term? Constantine, 62, has been India head coach twice, from 2002-05 and 2015-19. The Anglo-Cypriot was also in charge of East Bengal in the Indian Super League in 2022-23 but the club's ninth-place finish could put him at a disadvantage. Constantine took charge of Pakistan in 2023 and though they won a first World Cup qualifier (against Cambodia) under him, it turned out to be his only win in 10 matches in charge.

Star Indian batter Abhimanyu Easwaran's father, Ranganathan, has said that although he is not keeping a count of the days, he is counting the years rather. Notably, several players have debuted since Easwaran first received an India call-up up but he hasn't found a place in the XI yet. In 2021, Abhimanyu received two call-ups from BCCI, albeit as a standby, first for a home Test series against England and then for the WTC final against New Zealand. Easwaran's first official inclusion in the Indian team came in 2022, for the Test series against Bangladesh. 'I'm not keeping a count of the number of days that Abhimanyu has been waiting for his Test debut. I am counting the years; it has been three years now. What is the job of a player? It is to score runs," Ranganathan said. 'He has done that. People said he didn't perform in two India A matches during the last tour of Australia and didn't get into the team, which is fair enough. But Karun Nair wasn't in the team during the period when Abhimanyu performed before the BGT," Ranganathan added. He said that he has been in regular touch with Abhimanyu throughout the series, trying to keep him motivated. 'My son looks a little depressed, but that is bound to happen. Some players jump the gun based on IPL performances, which earn them a spot in the Test team. IPL performances should not be counted while selecting the team for the longest format," Ranganathan said. 'Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy should be the basis for Test selection," Ranganathan added. Abhimanyu has been out of action for the last month.
