UK builders find support in Labour's plan to upgrade roads and railways
Companies including Balfour Beatty, Costain Group, Morgan Sindall Group and Kier Group are lined up to win orders after Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves announced £113 billion (S$196.4 billion) of funding for public infrastructure across the UK last month. That includes £39 billion to build affordable homes, £14 billion for the Sizewell C nuclear project in Suffolk and £15 billion for new transport infrastructure across the north and midlands.
'The general pitch will be quite healthy,' Investec Bank analyst Aynsley Lammin said. He highlighted that an array of energy, water and housing contracts is already in the works, while the commitments made in Reeves' spending review will brighten the outlook and provide visibility on a steady order pipeline.
An improvement would be welcome. UK commercial building activity has been in contraction territory since January, according to S&P Global's overall construction PMI. The confidence level edged up to 48.8 in June, marking the slowest decline in construction output this year and reversing the downward trend. A reading below 50 indicates a reduction in activity.
'It might be too early for upgrades, but the risk is definitely on the upside,' Lammin said. 'At the very least it will be a strong underpinning, with expectations that margins and volumes will accelerate from next year.'
Order books for listed UK infrastructure firms are at or near record levels already, according to Deutsche Numis analyst Jonathan Coubrough. While government spending pledges tend to take several years to convert into construction activity, secured projects like Sizewell C can have a faster impact, Coubrough said. He expects the nuclear project to contribute to solid order book growth in the upcoming earnings season, particularly for Balfour Beatty, which was awarded contracts worth as much as £400 million a year until 2030.

High-speed rail project HS2 and BP and Equinor ASA's joint venture Net Zero Teeside Power – a gas-fired power station with carbon capture – will also support profit gains over this year and the next for Balfour Beatty, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Sonia Baldeira wrote in a note.
The London-based firm is the 'clear market leader in energy and power markets,' and should see the fastest growth among its peers this year as power firms increase their grid investments, Coubrough said. He expects Morgan Sindall, Kier and Costain to benefit from upgrades to the UK's water infrastructure.
Costain in particular is set to be a major beneficiary of AMP8, a regulatory overhaul of the UK water industry that aims to modernise infrastructure and address environmental challenges, according to Investec's Lammin. The company is working to deliver 260 kilometres of new pipelines to enhance drought resilience in eastern England, and recently entered an agreement with United Utilities Group to upgrade water and wastewater treatment sites as part of a £3 billion project that will last until 2030.
Morgan Sindall is 'exceptionally well positioned' to deliver on the government's affordable housing commitments, Lammin said. It already raised its outlook for 2025 last month, with its construction division set to outperform revenue and profit expectations.
Kier, which specialises in road, prison and hospital infrastructure, lifted its medium-term operating profit margin goal, showing confidence in its pipeline. Kier's ongoing turnaround is 'delivering solid results,' with a record £11 billion of orders in the fiscal first half supporting its move toward growth after a period focused on paring debts, BI's Iwona Hovenko said.
Still, delays in planning approval, difficulties in securing funding and inflationary pressures might complicate the delivery of such projects and the steady earnings growth that is expected to come with them.
'The administrative process of planning and getting these things funded takes time and usually longer than everybody hopes for,' Lammin said.
The biggest obstacle is engineering capability and human resources, according to Coubrough, particularly for complex projects such as power grid upgrades and tunnel projects. The shortage of skilled workers can in turn increase construction costs, worsening funding challenges.
Another headwind, more short-term and unpredictable, is the macro backdrop, Lammin said, referring to the bond market's nervous reaction to the recent speculation about a potential departure of Reeves as Chancellor. The sharp market moves brought to the fore the fragility of Britain's economic position, as the government attempts to balance ambitious spending – in infrastructure and beyond – with fiscal discipline.
Bond and equity markets recovered some of their losses after Prime Minister Keir Starmer quashed the speculation, giving Reeves his full backing. BLOOMBERG

Meta poached Apple's AI engineer Pang with pay package over US$200 million: sources
[SAN FRANCISCO] Meta Platforms has made unusually high compensation offers to new members of its 'superintelligence' team – including a more than US$200 million package for a former Apple distinguished engineer. Meta hired Ruoming Pang, who ran Apple's AI models team, with a pay package in the hundreds of millions over a several-year period, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who declined to be named discussing unannounced compensation details. Apple did not try to match the offer, as it far exceeds pay at the company for leaders other than chief executive officer Tim Cook. That pay package is in line with other major hires for Meta's new superintelligence team focused on building AI systems that can complete tasks as well as or better than humans, the people said. The team now includes former GitHub chief Nat Friedman and AI startup founder Daniel Gross. Meta tapped Scale AI co-founder Alexandr Wang as its chief AI officer by taking a 49 per cent stake in his firm worth US$14.3 billion. Menlo Park, California-based Meta declined to comment. Apple did not respond to a request for comment. From a pure numbers standpoint, the superintelligence group has some of the highest compensation of any corporate job, including CEO roles at the world's major banks. But much of the money is tied up in performance targets and unlocked during years of loyalty, meaning it might not all be received if employees leave early or if the stock does not perform well. The compensation packages for hires to Meta superintelligence labs, or MSL, are comprised of a base salary, a signing bonus and Meta shares, with the stock as the weightiest part of the package. The salary and bonus to join are often significant cash payments. In cases where a recruit would have to walk away from significant startup equity to join Meta, the signing bonus may be higher to account for that lost opportunity, the people said. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up For the stock portion, Meta tends to put in its contracts that the payouts are tied to specific metrics such as Meta's stock growing by at least a certain percentage in a given year, the people said. In many cases, the new hires are agreeing to join on contracts that exceed a typical four-year vesting schedule for stock, they added. New details of the structure of the compensation package come after OpenAI chief executive officer Sam Altman shocked Silicon Valley by describing AI talent wars with Meta on a podcast with his brother. Altman said in June that Meta had offered his employees signing bonuses as high as US$100 million, along with even larger overall compensation packages, to join the company's superintelligence team. Altman suggested his employees were choosing to stay at OpenAI because it had cultivated a better culture and reputation for innovation. Despite Altman's remarks, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has now successfully hired more than 10 OpenAI researchers, as well as top researchers and engineers from Anthropic, Google and other startups. As the talent wars have escalated, Altman said on Tuesday that he has not spoken to Zuckerberg since the Meta co-founder began his effort to poach some of OpenAI's top talent, but he's anticipating a meeting at the Allen & Co conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, this week and is 'looking forward to it.' Nvidia Hits $4 Trillion value, Surpasses Apple and Microsoft as CEO Jensen Huang's Wealth Soars with AI Boom
US tech giant Nvidia created history by becoming the first publicly held company ever to be valued at more than $4 trillion. Right in the eye of all this AI-fueled storm is CEO Jensen Huang, whose personal fortune grew by just over $1 billion in a single day of trading. Shares of Nvidia spiked to an intraday high of $164.37 on July 9, briefly putting the company's overall market value above $4 trillion. Shares in the California-based chipmaker have rocketed by almost 1,460% over the last five years, including an 18% advance in 2025 alone. The primary driver? Explosive demand for Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs), which have become critical to powering artificial intelligence systems at tech giants including Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet. Nvidia's historic rally also represents a financial milestone for its co-founder and CEO, holding around 3.5% to 4% of Nvidia. Bloomberg reported that Huang's net worth jumped by more than $1 billion in one day, lifting his total estimated wealth to $140 billion. Huang added about $25 billion to his net worth in 2025 alone. Investors continue to pour money into Nvidia for its unmatched dominance in AI hardware. The company's GPUs have emerged as the de facto solution for generative AI models that have underpinned advances in robotics, autonomous vehicles, and content generation, among other things. New technologies released by Nvidia in recent months, including the Blackwell system announced in March, are a significant leap forward in compute power. The new Blackwell system will be able to construct virtual things much faster than they can be made in the real world, according to Huang. The next generation of big AI programs and digital simulations is expected to run on this powerful technology. Some experts believe that Nvidia is at the forefront of a potentially massive boom in AI, and could one day be worth as much as $6 trillion. That victory has made Nvidia's stock the most valuable in the S&P 500 index, above both Apple and Microsoft. The milestone also means Nvidia is now at least worth more than France's and the UK's GDPs, highlighting the scale of investor faith in the company's role in shaping the AI-powered future. Although it is battling export challenges and increasing competition from rivals across the globe, Nvidia is pulling ahead with consistent innovation and a dominant share of the A.I. chip market.

eSIM platform Airalo raises US$220 million in new funding round, lifts valuation past US$1 billion
[SINGAPORE] eSIM platform Airalo has raised US$220 million in a financing round, valuing the company at more than US$1 billion. This makes the Singapore-headquartered company the first unicorn in the industry, Airalo said in a statement on Thursday (Jul 10). The latest funding round is led by a new investor, Luxembourg-based CVC with about 202 billion euros (S$302.9 billion) of assets under management. CVC is injecting US$185 million through its Asia Fund VI. Airalo has also received investments from existing stakeholders Peak XV and Antler Elevate. The eSIM provider will use the funds to accelerate its growth and improve customer experience – which includes enhancing user support and developing new products. Airalo also wants to use its platform to provide connectivity to companies, for the needs of their staff and clients. 'The digital travel eSIM market, whilst already worth US$1 billion, is at the very early stages of becoming the main method by which consumers can receive the highest quality experience abroad, at a much lower price than they pay for roaming today,' Siddharth Patel, managing partner at CVC, said in the statement. Founded in 2019, Airalo provides eSim services in more than 200 countries and regions to over 20 million users globally. Airalo added that it would soon introduce new data packages and in-app features, including dedicated data, text, and voice packages in selected markets.
