Harry Potter fans divided over first image of Nick Frost's Hagrid

Yahoo9 hours ago
Production is officially underway on HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter series and the studio has released a first-look image of actor Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, which has caused some debate among fans.
The 53-year-old will play the friendly groundskeeper alongside newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, who was also pictured in costume this week while filming at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden.
Fans were left divided over Frost's transformation, with some declaring they were 'loving' the actor in the iconic role, while others said his costume looked like 'cosplaying'.
'I'm so sorry this already looks like a parody show,' one person wrote on X/Twitter. 'Who exactly asked for this?' another fan questioned. Referring to the original Hagrid actor, Robbie Coltrane, another said: 'Love Nick Frost, but no chance of out-Hagrid-ing Hagrid.'
The TV adaptation of the famous franchise, which is expected to debut in 2027, confirmed by HBO Max in 2023, aims to be a 'faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer JK Rowling'.
The series is expected to run for a decade, with each season based on one of the seven Rowling books. The books follow the story of 11-year-old Harry Potter as he learns of his acceptance to Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft and wizardry, and his attempts to defeat the evil Lord Voldemort.

In May last year, HBO announced that after nearly 30,000 auditions for the three lead roles, McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout had been cast as Harry, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
Casting for most of the leading characters has been announced in the last few months. Paapa Essiedu is playing potions professor Severus Snape, Janet McTeer is acting as deputy Hogwarts headmistress and Gryffindor House head Minerva McGonagall, and Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The actors have faced criticism from some fans calling for a boycott of the series due to Rowling's views on transgender people which many consider transphobic.
However, Frost, known for Shaun of the Dead, made clear in an interview that his opinions 'don't align in any way, shape or form' with those of the franchise creator.
Last month, Rowling, 59, delivered her early verdict on the series in a post on X.
'I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!' the author said.
In response, a user asked the author: 'So you are not doing the writing for this show?' to which, the author clarified: 'No, but I've worked closely with the extremely talented writers.'
Rubeus Hagrid was previously played by Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane in the Harry Potter franchise, who died from multiple organ failure in 2022, aged 72, after starring in all eight films as the beloved half-giant.

John Torode left ‘heartbroken' after learning of MasterChef sacking online

John Torode was left 'heartbroken' after discovering he had been sacked from MasterChef online. Shortly after news broke of the celebrity chef being dropped from the cookery show, he released a statement revealing he had not 'heard from anyone at the BBC' or the production company behind the series. It's now been reported that Torode's agent was called 11 minutes before his sacking was announced to the public and that his agent 'hadn't a chance to call him'. 'He read about it on the BBC News website,' a source told The Sun. 'Obviously he's heartbroken. He feels he's been made a scapegoat off the back of the Gregg Wallace report.' The Independent has contacted the BBC, Banijay UK and Torode for comment. Torode, 59, was fired for using 'an extremely offensive racist term', which the chef said he has 'no recollection' of making. The allegation against him was upheld after being made during a seven-month investigation into the show, which substantiated 45 claims of misconduct against his co-host Wallace, including one of unwelcome physical contact. Wallace, who joined the revamped version of the show with Torode in 2005, has also been fired. On Monday (14 July), Torode confirmed that he was being investigated over his language, but said he was 'shocked and saddened' by the allegation and said he knows any racial language 'is wholly unacceptable in any environment'. After being dropped from the show without consultation, he said: 'I'd hoped that I'd have some say in my exit from a show I've worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in the last few days seem to have prevented that.' John Torode claims he wasn't informed of 'MasterChef' firing (BBC) 'Over the past few months, I have been considering my life and the shape of it now and in the future,' he continued, revealing it was 'time to pass the cutlery to someone else'. Torode said he 'will watch fondly from afar as I now focus on the many other exciting projects that I have been working towards', adding that his 'tummy will be grateful for a rest after 20 years of eating'. He said his time on the show has been 'a joy' and revealed that he had recently filmed a series of Celebrity MasterChef with Wallace's replacement Grace Dent as well as two Christmas specials. Torode has also filmed a MasterChef series with Wallace, the fate of which is currently unknown. BBC director-general Tim Davie said a decision is yet to be made about its broadcast but explained on Tuesday (15 July) that the 'difficulty' surrounds the chef participants who spent time away from their jobs to be on the show. John Torode's statement on 'MasterChef' sacking (Instagram) In a statement , the BBC said that the allegation against Torode involved 'an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace' and was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm, Lewis Silkin. 'The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.' Meanwhile, more than half of the 83 allegations against Wallace, including inappropriate sexual language and being in a state of undress, were upheld. Gregg Wallace said he is 'deeply sorry' after 45 allegations are upheld (Yui Mok/PA) (PA Wire) The TV personality said he is 'deeply sorry for any distress' caused and that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate' anyone with his behaviour.

Key Moments That Defined This Year's Emmy Nominees

On July 15th, the 2025 Emmy Award nominations were announced, and expectedly, we all were delighted AND surprised to see the outcome. Like really surprised. And like every award season, there are some major nominations that signify the greatness of actors and the art that is television and cinema. This nomination announcement did not disappoint (okay, maybe a little) with its results. These are the significant moments from the nomination announcement that we all should applaud and celebrate: Ayo Edebiri is the first female in Emmy history to be nominated as both an actor and a director for her work on The Bear. In 2023, Ayo won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for The Bear. She was nominated in 2024 for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series but lost to Hacks star Jean Smart. This year she is nominated again in the Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series category. And for the first time in her career, she is nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series for her direction of the episode Napkins in The Bear. Kathy Bates has become the oldest woman in history to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the age of 77, for the show Matlock. As a decorated and celebrated actress and veteran of the industry, Kathy Bates has crossed several milestones, with this one adding to it. This nomination is very fitting, considering that she is planning to retire from acting after the show ends. Big ensemble cast shows Severance and The Studio lead the Emmy nominations. The two shows, both of Apple TV+, were the most-nominated TV shows for the 2025 Emmys. This also shows the shift of preference for streaming platforms, with Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Disney+ moving ahead of leads the race with 27 nominations, and The Studio with 23 nominations. And out of these nominations, 9 are for actors in Severance and 10 are for actors in the latter. This signals that guest stars and a known cast really racked up the views and popularity of the two shows, in addition to their scripts. HBO's The Pitt received 13 nominations, including Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Leading Actor, and is finally getting its due appreciation. These nominations are a major win for the show, but this signifies a bigger win for its creators. The show being a massive hit amongst fans is signaling the rise in appeal and appreciation for budget-friendly settings: the cast had a fixed fee per episode ranging from $35K to $50K, allowing for a modest budget of $4-5 million for each episode. The fixed fee is being picked up to adjust to larger episode drops and scheduling. Additionally, the strategy behind weekly episode drops to generate organic growth worked in the favor of the show, as it quickly became a fan favorite. And honestly, all of this recognition is much deserved! The notable nominations for the show are as follows: Noah Wyle for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Katherine LaNasa for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and The Pitt itself for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as two directing nods for Amanda Marsalis and John Wells for the 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. episodes. Harrison Ford, Aimee Lou Wood, Cooper Koch, Kristen Bell, and many others get their first acting Emmy nomination! Harrison Ford, the legendary actor, was nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for the 2025 Emmys, marking his first-ever Emmy nod in his long and illustrious career. Similarly, Kristen Bell was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for Nobody Wants This, Aimee Lou Wood for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The White Lotus, and Cooper Koch for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. This marks their first acting Emmy nomination. Owen Cooper, the breakout star in Netflix's successful show, Adolescence, becomes the youngest nominee in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, making history! Owen Cooper has become a breakout star with this critically acclaimed show. Earning a nomination as his first-ever acting gig is a major win for the young actor! And if he were to win the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor, he would go on to become the youngest male winner in that category. Martin Scorsese, the legendary director behind Taxi Driver and many others, lands his first-ever Emmy nomination for the show The Studio. The director got the Emmy nod for his first foray into acting, for the "Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series," and it definitely was meaningful to him. Martin Scorsese's daughter posted the moment he found out about his nominatation, and it really was the sweetest thing to witness. Very wholesome. Besides these impressive moments, this year's nomination announcement also revealed some shocking snubs of beloved actors and shows, such as Patrick Schwarzenegger for The White Lotus. While the majority of the cast members of The White Lotus were included in the award race, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, and Leslie Bibb didn't seem to make the cut. And given the high praise for Patrick in this season, this definitely was a letdown. Similarly, Elizabeth Moss was also snubbed for the last season of The Handmaid's Tale, where she had been nominated in the past for Outstanding Lead Actress four times, and even won once. Eddie Redmayne won a Golden Globe and a SAG award for his role in The Day Of The Jackal but missed an acting nomination at the Emmys. Similarly, Agatha All Along missed out on any acting nominations, the loved show Andor missed out in the acting category, and Squid Game season 2 had no nominations, a major shock compared to the run they had in season 1. These Emmy Award 2025 nominations stand out as a testament to the fact that we are having the best television run currently. While the snubs were definitely surprising, I could not be more excited to see what other works are underway and who ultimately will walk away with an Emmy. It's moments like these that make me a true cinema and TV fan. The 2025 Emmys will be broadcast on September 24.

Primary Wave Acquires Rights from Estate of Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green

Primary Wave has acquired the publishing rights of Fleetwood Mac founder and original guitarist Peter Green, the company announced on Monday, with Primary Wave acquiring Green's interests in the songs he composed as well as the assets of Green's Rattlesnake music publishing catalog. Primary Wave declined to disclose financial details of the acquisition. The deal includes the early Fleetwood Mac hits Green penned including 'Albatross,' 'Black Magic Woman' and 'Oh Well.' More from The Hollywood Reporter Rob Reiner Teases Paul McCartney, Elton John Cameos in 'Spinal Tap II' Unreleased Beyoncé Music Stolen From Rental Car Ahead of Cowboy Carter Tour Atlanta Stops Blackpink Returns to L.A. to Remind Us All Why They're the Biggest Girl Group in the World Green co-founded Fleetwood Mac in the late '60s alongside Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, starting the group as a blues rock band. The instrumental 'Albatross,' which Green wrote himself, became the band's biggest early hit, topping the charts in the U.K. 'Black Magic Woman' meanwhile, became a hit for Santana and remains one of his biggest songs over five decades later. Green recorded three albums with the band, but he'd suffered from mental health issues (later being diagnosed with schizophrenia) and left in 1970. By the mid-70s, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined and launched the iteration of the band that reached international stardom. This isn't the first Fleetwood Mac deal Primary Wave has made; they bought a stake in Stevie Nicks' catalog back in 2020. Outside of Primary Wave, Buckingham sold his catalog to Hipgnosis Songs, Fleetwood sold his recorded music rights to BMG and McVie's estate sold her recorded music stake to HarbourView in 2023. Green, who died in 2020 at age 73, is often cited as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, lauded for his distinct tone and inventive and virtuosic approach to the blues. His 1959 Gibson Les Paul is itself a legendary instrument among guitarists, known to have a unique tone because one of its pickups was placed in the guitar upside down. That guitar, known as 'Greeny,' is owned by Metallica's Kirk Hammett, who's been known to give replicas of the instrument to other guitarists. 'When I look at the definition of a musical genius, Peter Green ticks every box,' Primary Wave's Robin Godfrey Cass said in a statement. 'As a musician, songwriter, and founder of Fleetwood Mac, he is an icon. It has been over 60 years ago since he began writing his body of legendary songs which are still in use every day. I am ecstatic that the estate has given Primary Wave the reins to continue his amazing legacy.'
