July 21 Is the Important Anniversary of Automotive Speed That You Never Knew About

Yahoo4 hours ago
We live in an era of insane speed. While the transparent velocities achieved by the likes of Koenigsegg and Bugatti are almost hard to contextualize, they are a wonderful marker of just how far the automobile has come in its relatively short history. That said, before we ever dared to chase speeds in the 300-mph range, we had to get to triple digits. July 21 marks an important day in the canon of that pursuit.
It was on this day, 101 years ago, that the automobile broke the 100 mph barrier for the first time. French racing driver Louis Rigolly managed to push his Gobron-Brillié racer to 103.561 mph on the beach at Ostend, Belgium back in 1904, besting the 97.25 mph record set in 1903 by Belgian racer Pierre de Caters. For reference, that's four years before the Ford Model T was ever offered to the public. You'd be lucky to see Tin Lizzie make it to 45 mph in-period. While Rigolly's own record would only stand for a matter of months, his efforts remain an important footnote in humanity's pursuit of speed.
July 21, 1925 would bring yet another record for the automobile. Speed icon Sir Malcolm Campbell would average 150.766 mph over the course of two runs across the Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire, Wales, adding another record to his extensive collection. His weapon of choice was a 350-hp Sunbeam-built racer known as 'Blue Bird', which remains one of the most famous machines of its era. Campbell would later go on to become the first person to break the 300 mph barrier in a car at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1935.
Ferrari would also tack its name onto this day in history back in 1987, pulling the cover off of the legendary F40 for the first time at the Civic Centre in Maranello. The F40 arrived as the first production car capable of breaking 200 mph, with a claimed top speed of 201. The car's record as the top-dog of the supercar world wouldn't last long, with the Jaguar XJ220 setting a new 217 mph record in 1993.
Here's to many more July 21 records to come.

Juventus open talks with La Liga giants for 27-year-old defender

Atletico Madrid's busy summer continues. While much of the attention has been taken up by a series of widely praised signings, namely Johnny Cardoso, Alex Baena and Matteo Ruggeri, Los Colchoneros will also have one eye on the exit door, as they seek to balance their squad. One player who seems on the threshold is Nahuel Molina. The World Cup-winner arrived as a big-money signing from Udinese three years ago, with Atletico spending €20m to finally solve their right-back issues after the exit of Kieran Trippier. However as time as gone on, Marcos Llorente has increasingly been installed as the go-to right-back. Juventus talks with Atletico Madrid It has been established that both player and club are open to a move, with Atletico also needing to free up a non-European spot that Molina also occupies following the arrival of Thiago Almada. GdS (via Diario AS) explain that Juventus have opened talks with Atletico for Molina, who has two years left on his deal. Image via EFE / Mariscal They say Atletico are asking for €25-30m, but the Bianconeri will try to bring that figure down. That may even include offering players, or player loans, with Dusan Vlahovic, Weston McKennie or Nico Gonzalez. Moving parts for Atletico Madrid However Molina's exit could be slowed by Atletico if they do not feel the offer is sufficient. It appears they may miss out on Jesus Areso, who in theory would have competed with Llorente for the starting spot. It is not yet clear whether that could affect Atletico's willingness to sell. Alternative options for Molina Meanwhile Juventus are unlikely to be the only side interested, with Villarreal having already made it clear they want Molina on a loan deal. No doubt depending on what money they can make though, Atletico would prefer a sale, given he would have to be offered a new deal that would take him into his thirties after this summer in all likelihood.

Jonas Valanciunas confirms he will play for Denver this season

Jonas Valanciunas' flirtation with Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos was real and they reportedly were willing to offer three years, $13 million (one of the largest contracts on the continent). The problem for Valanciunas: He was already under contract to the Denver Nuggets, who had traded for his rights from the Sacramento Kings. Denver had no intention of buying out Valanciunas, he is the best backup center Nikola Jokić will have ever had and a key part of the depth the team added over the summer to chase another ring. Valanciunas confirmed he is committed to the Nuggets next season, speaking to Donatas Urbonas of "I want to clear the air about my playing situation next season now that Denver has made their decision to keep me. The idea of playing for Panathinaikos, closer to home, was very exciting to me, but that will have to wait. I am fully committed to honoring my contract with the Nuggets this season and will give it my all to compete for a championship." Valanciunas is under contract for $10.4 million for this season, and he has a non-guaranteed $10 million for the 2026-27 season. After Denver made the trade to acquire the veteran center from Lithuania, general manager Ben Tenzer said he spoke with Valanciunas and his representatives, stating that they wanted him to play with them this season and that there was no intention to buy him out. (For Valanciunas to play in Greece next season would have required Denver to agree to a buyout to make him a free agent, FIBA rules do not permit a player under contract in one league to just sign a contract with another.) Valanciunas is critical to Denver's plans next season, which is why there was never a plan to buy him out of his contract. For a number of years — including during their championship run in 2023 — the Nuggets have fallen off sharply in the minutes Jokic was off the court. Last season, the Nuggets had a -8.5 net rating in the non-Jokic minutes, and in the 2023 championship season, it was even worse, at -9.9. Valanciunas helps change that because he is a skilled big man who can serve as the hub of an offense, executing dribble handoffs while midrange shots (inside 15 feet). Paired with Peyton Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Bruce Brown, and the emerging Julian Strawther, the Nuggets have real depth for a change.

Brighton's Estupinan closing on AC Milan switch

Brighton defender Pervis Estupinan is close to completing a move to Italian giants AC Milan. The Serie A side have been pushing to sign the Ecuador full-back for most of the summer and have already had one bid turned down. However, an agreement is close to being concluded that would allow Estupinan to move to the former European champions. Brighton were hoping to get around £17m for the 27-year-old, whose current contract expires in 2027. Estupinan came to England in 2016 when he joined Watford but never played a senior game for the club. Instead, he made his name in La Liga with Villarreal and was part of the squad that beat Manchester United in the 2021 Europa League final. He has made more than 100 appearances across three seasons at Brighton but he suffered a significant ankle injury in 2024 that caused him to miss Copa America.
