Premier Sports Cup extension agreed as broadcaster picks up Challenge Cup

Yahoo11-07-2025
An improved deal will see Premier Sports extend their League Cup coverage and title sponsorship until summer 2031.
The four-year extension for a competition that kicks off with group stage matches this weekend comes as the broadcaster has also secured rights for the KDM Evolution Trophy [formerly the SPFL Trust Trophy] for the first time.

Premier Sports will now show a minimum of four games from the Challenge Cup this season, with the option to show further matches.
The Premier Sports Cup deal extension comes after last season's competition welcomed record crowds of 440,697, culminating in a dramatic final which Celtic won 5-4 on penalties, following a thrilling 3-3 draw with rivals Rangers.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL group chief executive said: 'We place great value on our long-standing partnership with Premier Sports and it's brilliant news that we've agreed a major extension for the Premier Sports Cup for a further four years.
'Premier Sports continue to be a fantastic supporter of our game, with their high-quality coverage of SPFL matches, and their ongoing commitment is a real boost for Scottish football.

'We look forward to working together to build on the success of the Premier Sports Cup in the seasons ahead.
'We're also happy to confirm that fans will now be able to enjoy coverage of the KDM Evolution Trophy on the channel for the first time as we welcome our new competition format.
'Crucially, these latest deals also underpin record prize money for clubs in the Premier Sports Cup and the KDM Evolution Trophy this season.'
Premier Sports will stream 25 group stage matches live from the competition, alongside five group stage live TV broadcasts, and live coverage of the latter stages.

The announcement also comes as the SPFL have agreed changes to its long-term broadcast deals with Premier Sports and Sky Sports to allow two post-split, bottom six matches to be shown live on Premier Sports from season 2025/26.
They signed a five-season contract last year for Premier Sports to show 20 live Premiership matches per season in the UK and Ireland, which has now risen to 22.

Fabrizio Romano Confirms Liverpool Star is Set to Sign New Contract

Liverpool Planning New Contract for Rising Star Rio Ngumoha Liverpool continue their proactive approach to squad development, as Fabrizio Romano reports that 16-year-old talent Rio Ngumoha is set to be offered a new contract. With several first-team players recently securing long-term extensions, the club's focus on future stars signals their intent to maintain dominance under Arne Slot. Ngumoha's Breakthrough Season Ngumoha arrived from Chelsea last summer as a highly-rated teenager, and Liverpool have wasted no time integrating him into their plans. Over the past season, he trained multiple times with the first team and was included in matchday squads, most notably as an unused substitute in the League Cup quarter-final win over Southampton and during the shock defeat to Plymouth Argyle. His senior debut came in the FA Cup against Accrington Stanley, where he started at Anfield and played 72 minutes, demonstrating maturity beyond his years. He also featured across Liverpool's Under-21s, Under-18s and Under-19s, underlining his versatility and potential. In pre-season, he impressed further with a 45-minute display in the win over Preston North End. According to Romano, 'the club is said to be extremely happy for him, and they think he has a huge future.' This insight reflects the high regard in which Ngumoha is held within the club's hierarchy. Securing the Future Amid Transfer Interest While contract talks continue with Ibrahima Konate and Luis Diaz, Liverpool's decision to move early on Ngumoha's new deal shows sharp awareness of the market. With Real Madrid circling Konate and Bayern Munich and Barcelona interested in Diaz, tying down young talent becomes even more crucial. Ngumoha's rise comes in a summer where Liverpool have seen notable exits. Caoimhin Kelleher left for Brentford after a decade at Anfield, Vitezslav Jaros secured a loan to Ajax, and defenders Jarell Quansah and Nat Phillips moved to Bayer Leverkusen and West Bromwich Albion respectively. Despite these changes, the Premier League champions have avoided an overhaul, focusing instead on targeted improvements and extensions. Slot's Trust in Youth Arne Slot's first season brought not only the league title but also a renewed belief in Liverpool's academy products. The Dutch manager has shown he is unafraid to give young players a platform, and Ngumoha's inclusion in key fixtures suggests the teenager is firmly in his plans. With Liverpool committing to a mix of experience and youth, fans can look forward to watching talents like Ngumoha develop alongside stalwarts such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who have both extended their contracts until 2027. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis For Liverpool fans, this is the kind of update that gets the heart racing. Rio Ngumoha has been the buzz of the academy since his arrival, and the fact the club are ready to reward him with a new deal shows they are not just paying lip service to youth development. Arne Slot has already proven he trusts young players, and Ngumoha's senior debut last season gave supporters a glimpse of his sharp footwork, vision and confidence on the ball. Seeing him included in the pre-season win over Preston North End suggests he could be more involved with the first team sooner than many expected. What excites the fanbase most is the thought of Ngumoha learning from Salah and Diaz. Imagine him soaking up knowledge from world-class forwards while getting minutes under one of Europe's most exciting managers. Liverpool's commitment to tying down both senior and young stars speaks of a club that is planning not just for next season, but for the next decade. As champions of England, the bar has been raised. Seeing a future superstar like Ngumoha nurtured at Anfield, rather than shipped out or lost in the system, makes fans believe this new era under Slot will be just as thrilling as the one before.

On this day: Fred Roberts lost in expansion draft; Gary Payton, Javonte Green born

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team lost power forward Fred Roberts in the 1988 NBA expansion draft, held to populate two new teams set to join the league that coming season, the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat. Technically speaking, the Heat drafted Roberts with the fifth overall pick of the expansion draft, but immediately traded him to the Milwaukee Bucks for a collection of draft assets. Roberts himself had come to the team in a trade from the Utah Jazz (for the pick that would one day become current-day NBA head coach Billy Donovan), where he would play two seasons for the storied franchise in a reserve role. Roberts would average 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and an assist per game while with the team. It is also the birthday of former Celtic wing Javonte Green. He was born in 1993 in Petersburg, Virginia, and would play his college ball not far away at Radford. Going undrafted out of college, the future Celtic would play overseas before joining Boston for parts of two seasons between 2019 and 2021. Green put up 3.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest with the Celtics. Former Celtic guard Gary Payton shares the birthday with him. Born in 1968 in Oakland, California, Payton would attend Oregon State for his NCAA ball before being drafted second overall in the 1990 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics. The Californian would play for that team, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Los Angeles Lakers before joining the Celtics in 2004. He'd play just one season for Boston, averaging 11.3 points, 3.1 boards, and 6.1 assists per game, and would leave the team in another trade with the Atlanta Hawks in 2005. Finally, today is also the day we lost guard Jerry Kelly in 1996. Born in New York City in 1918, the Marshall alum joined the Celtics in their inaugural season of 1946-47 for 43 games. He averaged 6 points per game across that stretch -- rest in peace.
